Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
I knew there was no point arguing with Simon, so I grabbed Victoria's hand. "Victoria, please save my dad…"

Victoria glanced at Simon before pushing me away.

"Drop the act. There was no way my people would've seriously injured him. Don't try to fool me with a fake medical report."

Tears spilled from my eyes, and I vehemently shook my head. But before I could even speak, Victoria continued, "I know you don't actually need money from me. You're just pulling this stunt because you're jealous of Simon.

"How many times have I told you that Simon is an excellent worker? I'm just rewarding an employee for his achievements. Can you stop getting jealous over nothing?"

Two bodyguards came forward and dragged me outside.

"Victoria!"

I struggled with all my strength. As they hauled me past Simon, I noticed something. Apart from the five-million-dollar watch he was wearing, he also had a diamond-studded tie pin from the same collection. I recalled seeing that it was worth ten million dollars as well.

But I didn't have time to let this revelation crush me. I called everyone I could think of and managed to scrape together some money, but I was still short.

In my desperation, I suddenly remembered one of Mom's old possessions that Dad had hidden at the bottom of a trunk. It was a tiara that had been passed down through several generations. He'd only let me touch it for the first time on my wedding day, telling me to put it on Victoria.

But Victoria loved modern luxury goods and had little interest in such an antique-looking design. She wore it once just to humor Dad before tossing it back to me.

I rushed home and carefully dug out the tiara. It was a genuine antique from 500 years ago, making it a priceless item.

I immediately contacted the owner of an antique shop. After seeing the photos, he agreed to meet me right away. But just as I carried the box out of the house, someone slammed into me hard.

Simon cried out in surprise, and Victoria caught him.

"What's gotten into you, Mr. Jamison?" Simon protested. "Why are you rushing around without looking where you're going?"

I didn't have the luxury of responding to him. I hastily cradled the box with the tiara once more. But just as I was about to leave, Simon snatched the tiara from me.

"Oh! Is this that family heirloom of yours, Mr. Jamison? The tiara?"

"Give it back!" I lunged forward, but with one look from Victoria, the bodyguards quickly blocked me.

"Simon just wants to take a look at it. Don't act like the sky's falling."

"I need it to sell it! The buyer's waiting for me!"

Simon was taken aback. "What? You want to sell something this beautiful? Well, I was actually planning to buy it and give it to Victoria…"

Victoria immediately asked, "Eli, how much do you want for it? I'll pay you for it."

My eyes lit up at once. It'd be great if I could get the money quickly and use it to pay for Dad's treatment.

"Ms. Richards!" Simon stopped her. "It'd be fine if you bought it from someone else, but you two are married! How can you be expected to pay money to get something from your husband? What kind of married couple does that?

"Here's my idea—let me borrow the tiara for a few days. I'll hire someone to create one exactly like it and return the original to Mr. Jamison, completely unscathed. That'll save you some money, right, Ms. Richards?"

Victoria smiled fondly at him. "Oh, you. You're always thinking in my best interests."

"No way!" I reached out for the tiara at once. "If you're not buying it, I need to leave with it right away!"

But Simon refused to let go. "I'm only borrowing it. I'm not keeping it. Do you really have to be like this, Mr. Jamison?

"Besides, this thing is so old. The one I'm giving Victoria will be brand-new, so you don't have to worry about me stealing it for myself."

"Let go!"

The tiara was fragile, so I was careful not to pull too hard.

A flash of anger crossed Simon's eyes, and a dangerous glint soon appeared in them. He stared fixedly at me before abruptly releasing his grip.

The tiara slipped from his hand and crashed to the ground, shattering into pieces.

"Even if you don't want to let me have it, Mr. Jamison, there's no reason for you to smash it!" Simon cried out, acting all outraged.

Victoria frowned as well. "Eli! Couldn't you even stand to let him borrow it for a few days? Since when did you become so jealous that you'd rather destroy something than let anyone else have it?"

"Don't make it sound like I bought Eli," Whitney retorted. "Even if he didn't agree to marry me, if he came to me for help at a time like that, I would've helped him no matter what. I'm not like you, Victoria. I wouldn't take the money for my own dad's medical treatment and spend it on gifts for my so-called assistant.""Why, you—"Whitney's face whipped to the side from the slap. She stumbled backward, and I hastily caught her."Why didn't you dodge her?" I cried out. With a concerned look on my face, I wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth. She grabbed my hand and looked at me pitifully. "She's so violent, Eli. It hurts so much…"I couldn't help pulling her into a tighter embrace."You!" Victoria's fists clenched again.I stood defensively in front of Whitney. "Stop wasting your breath! She's the woman I'm marrying!"Victoria ground her teeth. "By all means, go ahead. But first, let's see if you can get a divorce from me!"…Just like that, despite having prepared a

"I just got a call from my dad! He's on vacation in the Mallerine Islands right now! How could he possibly be dead?" Victoria snapped at Angela. After a brief silence, Angela reported, "Ms. Richards, flights to the Mallerine Islands have been put on hold for months now. I doubt Mr. Richards would've gone there.""What was that?""As for the phone call… I think it could've been faked using some kind of technology," Angela added.Simon's face instantly paled. "Ms. Richards! Ms. Richards, I…"He gripped his phone tightly, but a bodyguard snatched it away forcefully. Before long, the tech team returned with their findings."It was an AI voice cloning program."Victoria barely managed to stay on her feet.Simon instinctively took two steps backward. "S-So it was just an AI clone of his voice… I… I had no idea. I guess it was a scam call. Someone must've wanted to use Mr. Richards' voice and get money… I got fooled, too…"A hard slap sent him crashing to the floor."Do I look like

The voice over the phone went on, "Are you counting on the fact that I said I'd leave you shares after I died? Let me tell you this right now—you won't get a single share of the family's company!"I nearly lost my balance. It really sounded like Lawrence, but I had watched his body go into the crematorium with my own eyes. I had personally carried his urn home.Lawrence didn't have a brother or anything, so what was going on…A slap landed on my cheek. My head smashed against the wall, leaving a bloody mark."Stop!" Dad hurried over and threw himself in front of me."Victoria, there has to be some kind of mistake! I attended Lawrence's funeral and burial service. The voice on the phone can't possibly be him!"Victoria sneered at him. "Even you're joining in on this, cursing your own daughter-in-law's father?""I—" Dad tried to protest."Guards, get in here! Throw these two out! This hospital room should go to people who actually need it, not a bunch of shameless attention seeke

Over the phone, Victoria demanded, "What did you say?" Her brows furrowed tightly."Mr. Richards died of an acute condition. Mr. Jamison has instructed me to make sure the death certificate is collected when it's ready, and—""How much did Eli pay you?" Victoria screamed at Henry.Henry was on the verge of tears. "I swear it's true, Ms. Richards! I worked for Mr. Richards for three decades, and he saved my life before! I would never joke about his death!"Victoria's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor while she stared blankly. "What… How is that possible…"Then she looked at me. "When you asked me for five million dollars, it really was…"I helped Dad up before looking at her, my eyes bloodshot. "I told you over and over that it was your dad who was sick, but you kept thinking I was just jealous of your stupid assistant."And to reward your so-called outstanding employee, you tore down my dad's old home, buried my mom's belongings, and caused my dad to end up hospita

I had no time to argue with Victoria and Simon. With trembling hands, I took a picture of the shattered tiara and sent it to the buyer. His response was wistful. "It's all shattered now, so it has no collectible value anymore."I hurriedly tried to call him, but he simply sent me 1,000 dollars. "This is all I can do to help you."I stared at the shattered tiara in my hands before checking the pitiful balance in my bank account. When I looked up, Victoria had already walked away with Simon. I heard her gently comforting him."It's okay. There's another tiara at next week's auction. I'll bid as much as it takes to win it, and you can give that one to me."The hospital's payment notices kept coming, and so did the urgent messages from the doctor. I dug my fingernails into my palms so hard that they nearly drew blood. After much hesitation, I finally made a call."I can divorce her and marry you, but… I need money."…I stumbled to the hospital and paid the bill. Then I watched a
