Chapter 5

At first, there were only two of us. I am the oldest of my siblings. Two daughters, born a year apart - Naomi and me. One dark-skinned – me. One fair skinned. This is a big deal to my mom’s family – of course making me a black sheep. We were always dressed neatly, always well-fed, always presented as though we were the jewels of the household. To anyone outside, we looked like blessings - healthy, bright-eyed, and thriving. But survival is not always visible in the shine of a child’s hair, the cleanliness of her skin, nor the neatness of her dress.

We each found our own ways to endure. I was the nerd, always lost in books. I devoured stories with a hunger that had nothing to do with curiosity and everything to do with escape. Between the pages of fairy tales and legends, I could breathe in worlds that were not my own, where monsters were slain, heroes rose, and endings could be rewritten. The words became my refuge, the only places where the horrors of my real life could not follow. Everyone saw me as the smart child destined to do great things and how lucky I was to be so smart.

Naomi’s solace was different. She turned to her dolls, her small hands stitching scraps of fabric into elaborate dresses. She would line them up, comb their hair, whisper stories into their silent plastic ears. She crafted tiny worlds where she was the creator, where order could be stitched into every seam. In those moments, I think she was trying to control what none of us could - giving her dolls the safety and beauty that we ourselves never had. Everyone saw her as the creative genius with the ability to make things others saw as impossible to do. She would decorate shelves and make beautiful knickknacks to give as gifts and most thought they were store-bought.

Nine years later, our brother arrived, and with him, a shift in the air. Reign Jr. - the long-awaited son. The one my father had been waiting for. His pride was palpable, a satisfaction that rolled off of him like heat. Finally, he had a boy, an heir, a vessel to carry on the Alpha genes he held in such twisted reverence. A son to mold into the image of power and dominance he worshipped. A s0n who would shine in his image. Often calling him the king. As if. But we had a common ground as he was dark-skinned too.

And of course, the house bent around him. Naomi and I were still expected to be perfect, still polished and silent, but his arrival crowned us with new roles: caretakers, examples, guardians of the boy who was to become everything our father idolized. Reign Jr. was innocent then, a wide-eyed child with no idea of the shadow he was born beneath. But even as a baby, my father’s pride claimed him, staking a future over his crib like a brand pressed into the flesh.

No one ever saw the bruises, nor could they know that we had endured unspeakable acts committed against us. No one smelled the liquor that lingered in the house or noticed the way my sister and I flinched whenever a male walked too close. I was often told I had such sad eyes. I would just smile. Later in life, I would realize it wasn’t that my eyes were inherently sad - it was that I carried a sadness that no child should bear, the weight of horrors awaiting me every time I went home.

In our pack, power and blood dictated everything. My father, despite his Alpha blood, chose to serve as Beta under my uncle Roman, one of the few men in the family who carried the title and the responsibilities of leadership with honor. The rest of my uncles - Mateo, our Delta, and Hamza, our Gamma - were steeped in corruption, cut from the same rotten cloth as my father. They were wife-beating, alcoholic, child predators, too consumed with cruelty and depravity to bear the mantle of Alpha. The eldest three sons avoided the burdens of leadership, leaving the youngest, Roman, to inherit the title. In the world of the Moon Claw Pack, the Alpha is not only the strongest and fastest but also the guardian of the pack, the keeper of order, and the wielder of our bloodline’s legacy. Leadership is a sacred duty, one my father’s family perverted with violence and fear, leaving me and Naomi to survive under the shadow of monsters masquerading as pack leaders. Despite this, they proudly called themselves leaders, warriors, and protectors of the pack. But in truth, they were nothing more than low-life child predators, hiding behind the law of the pack and the fear they cultivated. They never protected their families from themselves, never shown the strength, honor, or wisdom that true leadership demands. Their titles are empty, their power a mask for cruelty, and their legacy a shadow of the violence they inflict.

Our grandfather believed women existed for little more than kitchens and childbirth. Nothing else mattered. From the earliest years, Naomi and I were trained in the duties expected of us: cooking, cleaning, tending to the household. By the time we were nine and ten, we could have dinner prepared, the table set with precision, and the house spotless before our father or grandfather ever stepped through the door. And after meals, we were responsible for the cleanup, scrubbing dishes, cleaning the floor on our hands and knees, and wiping counters until the scent of soap mingled with the lingering aromas of food. Every motion was rehearsed, every chore a silent lesson in obedience.

I learned many years later that my grandfather’s hands were far from gentle. He often beat my grandmother, his anger leaving bruises no child should ever witness. It was only after Uncle Roman returned from the Alpha Academy - ten long years away - that his violence finally ceased. Even then, though the physical blows stopped, the damage had already been done. To his mother, to his sisters, to their wives, and to the nieces and nephews who suffered in silence. I do not know whether Uncle Roman learned of the abuse immediately, or if it came to him through whispers among staff and family. His brothers hid their darker natures well, and the truth had layers of secrecy and denial.

He swung a heavy, desperate fist. I didn't block it; I flowed. I shifted mid-step, my body becoming as fluid as the currents around my feet. His punch collided with nothing but empty air, the momentum sending him stumbling forward. Before he could recover, I let the wolf take the lead. I lunged, a flash of white fur and bared teeth, snapping inches from his throat. At the last possible microsecond, I pulled back, the heat of my dragon-fire brushing against his sleeves until the fabric began to smoke. I wanted him to taste the edge of my power. I wanted him to see the abyss he’d spent years trying to create.Tad remained my anchor, his hand a steady weight on my back. His voice was a low, melodic murmur that cut through the roar of the elements. “You can do this, Cara. Breathe. Control the storm; don’t let it become you.”While Tad held my spirit, Roman secured the perimeter. He moved like a living shadow, flanking Reign with a predator’s grace. Every warrior behind him stood like a st

Beside me, I heard Tad’s sharp intake of breath. He was the only one close enough to feel the true "vibration" of the dragon-fire. He didn't step back. Instead, he adjusted his stance, his own pulse syncing with the "invisible currents" at our feet. We weren't just a girl and her Guardian; we were the "center of the storm." I felt the steady, heavy warmth of Tad’s hand. He pressed his palm against the small of my back, a grounding force in the middle of my elemental storm. He wasn't pulling me back; he was holding me steady, letting me know he was the anchor if I decided to let the fire go.Roman POVI arrived at the training field in a blur of motion, my lead warriors flanking me like a wall of shadow. My eyes locked instantly on Reign. He stood there with a sickening ease, shoulders relaxed as if he owned the very air Cara was struggling to breathe.I gave a sharp, nearly imperceptible nod to my guards. They fanned out, fingers tensed over the syringes. The mild wolfsbane wouldn't k

The word transition sounded like a death sentence. He didn't want to help me master my power; he wanted to sharpen the blade until it was exactly what he wanted, regardless of whether I survived the process. I kept my face a mask of granite, but inside, my mind was a storm of static and fire. I reached for the tether that connected me to Uncle Roman, my mental voice jagged and breathless. Uncle Roman! He’s here. On the training field. He says the Elders authorized him to train me. Please, tell me this is a mistake. Tell me he's lying.Roman’s voice came back after a heavy silence, thick with a regret that chilled me further. I’m so sorry, Cara. The Council outvoted me but I do not care. They think he’s the only one who can ‘break’ your limits. I’m coming to the field now. Just hold on. He will not train you, I will. I’ll be there as soon as possible.I looked back at my father – former Beta Reign. The title felt like a curse. My father didn’t train people. He didn't teach form or tech

I stepped back, suddenly hyper-aware of the distance between us. “I shouldn't be telling you this. Not now.” But then I looked at him - really looked at him - and the dam broke. I didn't just tell him; I practically threw the words at him, each one a jagged shard of glass. I gripped my own elbows, trying to hold myself together, but the kinetic energy in my hands was making my skin hum. I wasn't just talking; I was vibrating with the unfairness of it all.“He’s a beacon, Tad,” I choked out, the kinetic energy in my hands finally snapping into a small, visible spark of static. “He’s practically inviting them in, and the Elders… they just want me to be a better shield. They don't care if the shield breaks, as long as the Pack stays dry.”As I spoke, Tad’s expression shifted and he did not move at first. He stood there, his shadow long against the pine needles, absorbing the impact of my father's betrayal. He didn't offer a platitude. He didn't tell me it would be okay. Instead, he stepp

My wolf didn't just pace now; she stood at the forefront of my mind, her eyes glowing with a reflected golden light. She was done with the 'stigma.' She was done with the whispers. To her, these Elders weren't leaders - they were obstacles stuck in a time where children are only seen and never heard. Silence is ingrained in us.Well played, Isis whispered, her voice filled with a dark, appreciative mirth. You used their own leash to choke them. They wanted a weapon they could control; instead, they found a queen they have to negotiate with.I didn't wait for a dismissal. I turned on my heel and stormed out of the chamber, the heavy oak doors thudding shut behind me like a gavel delivering a death sentence. My blood was boiling - not with just anger, but with the literal, physical radiation of the dragon. The cool hallway air didn't just feel good; it hissed against my skin, turning to steam as I passed. My dark dress flared around my ankles as I walked out of the chamber. Behind me, I

The Elders sat behind the massive obsidian table like stone statues, their eyes sharp and unyielding. The air in the chamber was heavy, smelling of old parchment and the biting, metallic scent of repressed power. “You have power beyond your years, Cara,” the Eldest said. His voice was cold as ice, a sound that usually preceded a lecture or a sentence. “But power without discipline is a liability. It is a flame that burns the house down from the inside.”I kept my back straight, refusing to let the weight of their collective gaze bow my shoulders. “I’m learning from my Uncle Roman,” I replied, keeping my tone steady despite the tension vibrating through the floorboards. “He is teaching me control.”“You will need to learn faster,” another Elder snapped, his voice cracking like a whip. “This pack is in a precarious position. Word of a white wolf with your level of Raw Power is a beacon. We could be in danger the moment word gets out about your presence here.”I narrowed my eyes, a spar

Still, even then, there was a part of me he could not reach. The same part that rose from my body at five years old - the part that watched from above, silent and untouchable. That fragment of me became my rebel spirit, watching and waiting for the day she could be unleashed. Though his lies bound

From the outside, everyone thought we were the perfect family. I am gagging as I write, if only they knew the truth. To neighbors, to the pack, to anyone who glimpsed us in passing, we were polished and enviable - a household that seemed untouched by struggle. My parents made certain of it. We were

I am the child of this legacy. The weight of my blood is heavy, yet it is also my shield. And though enemies may rise, though whispers may seek to curse my name, I will never again be silent. My truth will be heard, and my power will not be denied. The first memory I have is not of sunshine, laught

  • Hybrid Warrior - A Survivor's Story   Chapter 1

I am Cara, and I speak now because the truth can no longer be chained. For too long, silence was pressed into my very being, forced upon me until it became second nature. I carried that silence like a weight that was never mine to bear. Shame clung to me like a cloak, heavy and suffocating - a garme
