Chapter 108

Author: Gathered Light
Jacklyn slept in until sunrise the next day. Warm morning light spilled through the window, wrapping around her like a cozy blanket. After the chaos of the past two days, she finally felt a flicker of peace.

Then came a timid knock at the door.

"Jackie, are you awake? Let me drive you to the studio today."

Just like that, the peace was gone. She got up, leaving Eugene's question unanswered.

Jacklyn had just finished washing up and made it downstairs when he slithered up to her again. She tried to brush him off, but he wasn't having it. In the end, she gave in and let him drive her to the studio.

Eugene was halfway there when his phone buzzed to life. The workers at Lloyd Group's construction site had snapped, surging into a full-blown riot.

He had no time to drop Jacklyn at her studio. He slammed the gas and veered straight for the construction site.

By the time he arrived, the crowd had already swelled into a furious mob at the entrance, signs thrusting into the air, voices roa

Jacklyn's eyes lit up as she accepted the new key. "Thank you.""It's mutually beneficial," Liam said with a soft smile. She slipped the key in her pocket and then texted the new cabin number to Eugene. She'd just finished settling in when he came over to find her. However, when he opened the door, he was very surprised to see two single beds. "I remember being allocated a double bed. Why are there suddenly two singles?"Jacklyn was just about to explain when Eugene's eyes sparkled, and he rushed over to Jacklyn, looking delighted. He wrapped an arm around her delicate waist, his fingers tracing slow circles over the thin fabric of her shirt. His gaze, stirred by speculation, was now clouded with thick desire.Leaning in, he pressed her lips against her ear, whispering, "Is it so we have a clean bed to sleep on… after?"Jacklyn was speechless. What kind of filthy nonsense was running through his head? She pressed a palm to his chest. "Gene—"But before she could finish the r

"Whose fault is it that we've never gone on that trip you talked about?" Jacklyn shot back. Her cool, indifferent tone made Eugene's expression falter. It was him—he hadn't had the time, so they hadn't gone on the trip.He knew he was to blame, so he apologized, feeling guilty, "Jackie, I'm sorry. It's all my fault for not following through on my promise."But not only is this a rare opportunity, but we'll get a lot of alone time together, too. Jackie, I can't even remember the last time I went on a date with you." He coaxed and pleaded, looking as if he wouldn't stop until she gave in.Jacklyn rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on because of his persistence. She forced her frustration down and answered, "Fine. Whatever you say."Eugene immediately leaped to his feet, gripping her hands tightly. "I'll come pick you up tomorrow afternoon for boarding."…The next day, Eugene picked Jacklyn up at the agreed-upon time. 40 minutes later, the car pulled up to the docks

Penelope jerked her head up as she stared at Lydia, bluntly calling the latter out, "You're not going to help me, Lydia? You just want to wait until I have the baby so you can throw me aside?"Her words were so blunt that they wiped the expression clean off Lydia's face. "What are you talking about? Wasn't this what we agreed on in the beginning? You'll only be made the official 'Mrs. Lloyd' after you give birth."Penelope's chest burned with frustration. She chuckled coldly as she reminded Lydia, "Have you forgotten that Emily Lopez is my godmother? You may be the president of the Women's Association right now, but everyone still follows her lead. "Without her, do you really think you can keep the members of the association in check? When that happens, your days won't be smooth sailing, either."Lydia's eyes widened in disbelief at those words. "How dare you threaten me!"She shot to her feet and jabbed her finger in Penelope's face. "You haven't given birth yet, nor are you a

Penelope's tears streamed down her face, looking especially heartbreaking, but Eugene only looked with indifference."Jacklyn is my wife. Have you still not figured out your place? Penelope, if it weren't for the child, I would've dealt with you long ago for everything you've done."In the past, Eugene would've tried to coax her to stop crying, but now, he wasn't even bothered. She stared at the man standing in front of her in shock, her heart shattering. "Gene, how can you say something like that?"Eugene loosened his grip on her chin, his dark eyes thick with warning. "I hope this is the last time. Otherwise, not even the baby will save you."When he left, the room fell into an oppressive silence. Fear made her knees buckle, and she dropped to the floor with a dull thud. Penelope knew he wasn't bluffing. …In the meantime, over at Lloyd Manor, Jacklyn had just set the watering can down and stepped out of the greenhouse when she received a call from Irene. "Jackie, you sh

Penelope looked at Eugene with confusion etched across her face, her heart thudding loudly. "W-What do you mean? Meet someone?"Eugene ignored her and turned to Quentin, who was standing by the door, signaling for him to bring the person in. Following his gaze, Penelope turned to the door and found a man, head lowered, being escorted in by Quentin. When she saw the man's face, her blood ran cold, and her hands began to tremble uncontrollably. How could this happen? How did they find him?But quickly enough, she forced down the panic bubbling inside her. She couldn't afford to panic just yet. After all, he might not have sold her out yet. "Penelope, do you recognize him?" Eugene asked, his voice slow and deliberate. A shiver ran down her spine as she hurriedly shook her head. "No, I don't remember seeing him before. Gene, why did you bring him here?""Still don't get it?" Eugene asked. He stood up, leaned down to get a wad of cash from the bag, and flung it at her face. "Pen

Jacklyn gave a faint smile, finding those words painfully ironic. She couldn't understand how Eugene could repeatedly cheat on her yet still act as if he were so devotedly in love with her at the same time. Just as he was about to start spewing more nauseating words, Jacklyn cut in, "Gene, the most important thing right now is that if those photos leak, the uproar won't be any smaller than last time, and it'll definitely impact Lloyd Group."Eugene hurriedly nodded. "I know. I'll be more careful from now on. Thank goodness you're smart and understanding, Jackie, and you didn't get fooled. Otherwise, I'd really have no way to explain myself."She gave him a smile but couldn't be bothered to continue the conversation. "This needs to be taken care of immediately. I'll leave these for you."Then, she headed upstairs to her room and straight for the desk. She pulled open the drawer, and photo after photo of Eugene and Penelope in each other's arms, kissing, came into view. She took
