Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: An Orange
The search and rescue team had only seen the skeletons on the outside. They had no idea that there were countless baby spirits in the pit. The villagers had abandoned all their unwanted baby daughters there over the last few years.

Not wanting the abandoned babies to take revenge on them, they built a small tower and carved runes all over it to suppress the spirits. However, the villagers' fear of vengeance also prevented the innocent babies from being reborn.

The tower lost its power after it was destroyed, so it was nothing more than a pile of broken bricks now.

No one could see the babies' spirits traversing gleefully all over the mountains, playing pranks on everyone who stepped foot into the area.

I kneeled down next to the broken tower and asked, "Can you let me take Soleil home?"

The babies' spirits giggled eerily as they floated around me in a circle.

I knew what they were trying to tell me. "No, Mommy will get angry."

They were more willing to listen to their "Mommy" than me.

I let out a regretful sigh and pulled out my blessed sword that was carved from a tree that was struck by lightning.

"You leave me with no other choice then," I said.

The babies' spirits scattered, not daring to get in my way. Instead, they stuck their tongues out at me from afar.

After all, I used to be their leader, which also meant that I still intimidated them.

Since they weren't willing to disclose Soleil's location to me, I would simply have to look for her myself.

I searched through the entire pit, but I couldn't find Soleil's body anywhere.

I sighed as I stood outside the tomb that had a dragon carved on the entrance, not wanting to enter.

"Do we have to do this? He doesn't like it when people enter his home uninvited. Besides, his people are the ones causing trouble. If you come out now, we can still talk about this. If you don't, I'll have no choice but to go inside."

It seemed that I was out of options when the silence stretched on with no reaction from within.

I gritted my teeth and entered the tomb, ignoring the fact that the owner once told me that he would eat me if I dared to return.

However, he should be able to understand why I broke my promise, knowing that I had no choice but to do so. But truth be told, he shouldn't even be aware of my presence, considering the fact that he was no longer there.

I didn't smell the tomb owner's scent even once when I returned this time.

I navigated past the rooms with familiar steps, dawdling until I made it to the main room. I couldn't help the slight twinge of frustration that bubbled in my chest, wondering why Soleil had to hide here of all places.

As expected, I found Soleil lying in the casket in the main room. Her corpse showed no signs of decomposition, but there was a strong, rotting stench wafting from it.

Her stomach was extremely swollen. Her shirt had ridden up to her chest, exposing her entire belly. The surface of her stomach was covered in green veins, and she looked like she was seconds away from giving birth.

In fact, I could see her stomach moving.

I frowned, feeling fury bubble within me. Still, I suppressed my anger and politely asked, "Are you going to come out by yourself? Or do I have to extend an invitation to you?"

Soleil didn't say a word, but the negative energy in the tomb grew thicker, as if we were in a freezer.

I had obviously angered it.

Still, I tried reasoning with it. "Don't you know that you're crossing the line by lying in someone else's casket? Also, you're not supposed to behave this way. You've been perfectly fine all this time staying here and playing your role as the spirits' mother, no?"

With the existence of a tower to suppress the spirits of deceased babies, there would most certainly be a ghost mother.

A ghost mother who lost her child was a perfect match for abandoned babies, after all. The presence of the babies allowed her to become stronger, while the babies were given a mother.

Unfortunately, the ghost mother had crossed the line by getting a human involved. She was even trying to use Soleil's body to return to the human realm.

I didn't take action immediately. Instead, I pulled out the piece of cloth that belonged to Charlotte and set it aflame along with a talisman.

"She's not an unwanted child. Her parents are waiting for her," I said.

Soleil suddenly bolted up into a sitting position, staring at me with dark eyes.

  • Scaling the Tower of the Forsaken   Chapter 10

ExtraI was abandoned on Mt. Ghost Maiden when I was only a few months old. There were many other children like me in the cave. After I got tired of playing with them, I wailed loudly because I was starving.I crawled deeper into the cave until I made it to the tomb. Eventually, I fell asleep in the tomb owner's arms. The villagers thought the tower used to suppress the deceased babies' spirits was unlucky, so they never ventured further into the cave. As a result, they had no idea there was a massive tomb at the bottom of the pit. They were also clueless about the fact that an ugly zombie lived inside the tomb.Of course, no one knew that the zombie was good-natured despite his fierce appearance. For example, he would simply close the door when the babies' spirits were causing trouble in his tomb. There was also a ghost mother living right outside his home. Although she was secretly absorbing his energy to strengthen her own power, he didn't expose her and let her do as she p

The corpse baby let out a pained shriek before it also broke away from the fight.I snatched the demon-sealing sword out of Gabriel's hands and hurled it at the corpse baby, pinning it to the wall."At least this one is dealt with."The corpse baby looked rather shriveled up, as if someone had drained every single drop of its energy. It dissolved into a pool of blood when I stabbed it with the sword. The lights in the hallway flickered.Gabriel grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and dragged me away from the room as fast as he could.I was genuinely surprised that he hadn't just abandoned me at such a dangerous moment. I was grateful to him, but I would never ask him for help again.A figure swayed from side to side at the end of the hallway.Emilio didn't chase after us. Instead, he stood rooted to the spot as he watched us leave without saying a word. His red eyes glimmered with a bewitching glint. An inexplicable emotion shone in his dark gaze.Blood dripped from his sharp

The blessed sword was broken, but I still had a few soul suppression nails in my bag. They were the same ones that I had used to seal the casket. I had stuffed them into my bag before I left the morgue earlier.I had to figure out a way to immobilize Soleil's body. I still had a chance to turn things around since the fetus wasn't ready to be born yet.I shot a few talismans at the ghost mother. The ghost mother swiftly scrambled to her feet and dodged out of the way, contorting her body into bizarre shapes.I plunged a soul suppression nail into her arm while she was distracted with the talismans. Using a strengthening talisman, I drove the nail right through her arm and pinned it to the wall. The ghost mother glared at me hatefully with her pitch-black eyes. Her free arm shot out toward me, clawing at my neck.I pulled out another soul suppression nail and pinned her palm to the wall.I thought that I was on the brink of success since I had immobilized both her hands. I didn't

I just didn't understand why the scent of blood clung to Emilio. If he hadn't taken anyone's life, he shouldn't smell like blood. But it was fortunate that Emilio wasn't working with the ghost mother. I would simply have to deal with them one at a time.I descended to the basement where the medical waste storage area was located. The hospital staff members would leave the medical waste there every day.The negative energy was extremely thick.A dark shadow pounced on me seconds after I stepped through the door.My senses were immediately permeated with the pungent scent of a corpse. I grabbed my blessed sword with one hand and pulled out a suppression talisman with the other. The ghost mother shrieked as the smell of charred flesh wafted through the air. She had burned her hand when she grabbed the sword. My teacher, Zack Waters, had carved the sword from a thousand-year-old peach tree after it was struck by lightning. He had ended up giving the sword to me instead of Gabriel, w

I hadn't expected the ghost mother to be so crafty.I backpedaled to the ward where I had heard the voice come from. I was just about to open the door when it slammed open. The ghost mother bumped into me, causing me to stagger backward a few steps. Although her stomach was heavily swollen, her steps were lightning-fast.A middle-aged woman stepped out of the ward. She looked like she had just seen a ghost as she asked, "What's that smell? Why would someone as young as her be so unhygienic?""It's the smell of a corpse," I answered quietly.Ignoring the woman's horrified expression, I chased after the ghost mother. The ghost mother had reached the elevator.I tightened my grip on the talismans, planning to strike the moment I blocked the surveillance cameras' view. However, seconds after I raised the sword, I noticed that there was a doctor in a white coat in the elevator as well. The ghost mother stood in the corner of the elevator, glaring at me with resentful eyes. The doct

I was immensely frustrated by the situation. "I already told you that no living being must approach it. Who touched the casket?" I asked, clearly irritated.Charlotte wasn't around.Ashton lowered his head, looking as if he had just been caught red-handed with his hand in the cookie jar."It was Charlotte. She thought that Soleil looked so pitiful being nailed up, so she removed the nails when I wasn't paying attention."Charlotte just wanted Soleil to feel better, but she was gone by the time we woke up this morning. Charlotte fainted on the spot. Please help us, Ms. Clearwind!"Charlotte had been hit with a wave of resentful energy, leaving her unconscious as she lay on a bed in the hospital. It was pointless to say more since the situation had already escalated to this point.I sighed as I gave Ashton a resentment banishing talisman, telling him to burn it and mix the ashes into a glass of water for Charlotte to drink.I then pulled out a spirit-seeking compass and began my

My hand shot out as I smeared some magic-imbued blood on Soleil's forehead. At the same time, Soleil's swollen stomach began moving wildly, as if something was about to burst out of it.The thing inside her immediately calmed down when I pasted a suppression talisman to her stomach. Feeling worrie

I never thought I would return to that place again, but the world was a small place.I took a late-night flight to the town where Soleil had gone missing. I would still need to be on the road for about half a day before I reached the mountains.I arrived at the foot of the mountains at 12:00 pm.

  • Scaling the Tower of the Forsaken   Chapter 1

Headlines of a missing young woman dominated the news. She had chosen to go hiking in the mountains to avoid the holiday crowds. Her family members looked haggard as they cried their hearts out in front of the cameras, praying to anyone and everyone to give them a clue of her whereabouts. The sear
