The day dragged on, the storm battering the city like a fist Finally, when the office had cleared, deafening crashes rumbled far out along the sweep of the horizon, rain hitting higher windows of the publishing house.

Leya sat at the back of the desk, fingers dashing across the finished manuscript. Belly was rigid and unyielding under loose clothing, curved rigidity, promise of an unborn child. Sometimes, when the baby stirred, she'd lay her hand there and softly coo — sounds that no one ever heard.

Silence was comfort, and she was tired.

Until stealthy feet shattered the silence.

"Still writing?"

She looked up to find James standing in the doorway of her office, coat thrown over the hump of one shoulder, tie loose. Stormlight darkened and churned around him, his face closed.

"Oh," she panted. "Just going over these notes."

He simply stood there for a second, looking at her, his eyes going through her straight shoulders, the curve of outlay of her hands on the page. He came over t

There was silence.Silence that lay on her chest, heavy and stifling, as if the walls themselves recalled all who ever lived in this home — and wept alongside her.Leya's grasp on her father's doorframe was a strangling, fists clenched around it, knuckles frozen. She wasn't breathing, eyes fixed on the familiar room: the bookshelf lost under stacks of books never opened in years back, the handle-less and one-legged dresser, the creaky bed. All standing just as they'd stood the night he closed his eyes for the very last time.Nine years. And yesterday, as well. Her legs took her there, her own on the hot floor by herself. She stood beside the dresser, and with trembling hand, her fingers closed around the photograph on it. Her father's smiling face looked up at her beneath broken glass — warm and stationary, full of love that could never be altered. The photo uncoiled her.Her legs went out from under her and she crashed across the room in a wrecking cry. The picture clutched to her ch

Leya shoved the creaky wooden door with a shaking hand past the rusty doorknob. A puff of dust rose like a muted secret, arid air thick with abandonment. His vibrant childhood home — his house of full tables, laughter, and his boisterous self — stood vacant, timeless. Her sneakers squeaked gently against the floorboards, A lone sound, and she was reminded of how vacant the house had been at that time as her fingers caressed the one against the wall, over wrinkles of picture frames no longer against walls. The best answer is. For a moment, she pictured — Dalton and Ava giggling down the hall, her mum calling them in for some grub, her dad whistling this tune he always had at the corner of his mouth. She woke up, though, and they weren't there. There was dusty nothingness. Her chest constricted. She snuck into the back room — her dad's room. The door groaned as she leaned against it, The air was warmer, denser in there, as if the room was holding its breath to see when or if he wo

Rain yet to fall stuck to its wet-ash face. Leya wrapped around her coat, pulling the twins down the crowded street, one small hand in each.Leon gasped while he chattered a blue streak of talk about toy automobiles he had seen in the window of the shop. Aurora plodded on, humming a miniature tuneless tune, skipping every other step, curls bouncing. It was normal. It was magic.Leya had arranged things so that her life would continue like this forever — alone, unencumbered, secure.Destiny otherwise.---Harrison had just emerged from the office of his psychologist a block from where he resided. He did not drive by car but on foot. It was nearby. Two years of torture-filled sessions had seeped the life out of him and re-shaped him into a gorgon barely recognizable. His sadism was dulled now but not the welts. He had learned his devils — treachery of Maya, cruelty of father, cruelty — and forgiven, inch by throbbing inch, screaming, the boy he used to be.Forgiveness had not filled the

The day at Leya's apartment started like every single day had started.Thin light cast through thin drapes enveloped the crib where two tiny bodies fought. Aurora stirred first, her soft crying ringing out around the room, her tiny fists flailing in the air as though insisting the world awaken and listen to her.And then Ari stirred.Leon trailed behind him two seconds later, grinning — a soapy grin never to be able to provoke Leya's smile unless she happened to be the most exhausted. She descended from the bed, hair in dirty matted clumps, eyes half-closed, and hugged Aurora against her at first, enfolding her tightly in her own body and swaying her. And Leon, whose fretful little hands immediately became wildly intertangled in her hair."Good morning, my lions," she breathed, leaning to kiss the tops of their clean heads. She didn't mind that she ached behind, or that her check would never pay rent, food, and diapers. She was richer than she ever was within the Blackwood house in th

Time is odd the way it kills and cures simultaneously. Two years had passed since Leya Weiss vanished from the Blackwood mansion as a specter dissolved in the cracks of destiny. Two years since she fled leaving behind the man who had broken her, with nothing but a trunk, her unborn child, and a shattered heart. Two years henceforth worlds were reborn. The city was rebuilt, as well. Seasons went by. Summer showers became winter snows. The streetlight glow on other faces, other lives, dwindled to one harsh, holy truth: survival. Survival reformed her. She held them in her arms for the first time that day — two small, awkward lives with eyes burning as harshly as the breaking day's — Leya knew she would never have her life. Boy and girl, twins, both swaddled up in puffy warm hospital blankets and attracted to her own shivering, low-temperatured breast. She named the boy Leon and the girl Aurora. Leon — lion-hearted, the words that had held in them her obstinacy, her courage, her n

It was no longer a prison. The Blackwood house fell behind, golden as a poisoned fairy-tale palace. It was where a moving city had taken its place — the rattle of trams on greasy rails, the hiss of espresso in busy cafes, autumn gusts that brought the scent of roasted chestnuts from street stalls. It was not quiet. It was not money. It was not power. It was life.---Five months had gone by since Leya Anderson escaped the Blackwoods.Five months since the quiet tears had vanished under the shadow, suitcase wrapped around her waist like protection.Five months since she'd promised the baby within her they'd begin anew. She'd kept that promise. The bakery on the basement floor welcomed her each morning at 5 a.m., the scent of butter and fresh bread wafting with the creak of planks Beyond, trams squealed as they clanked up the small apartment. Ava's laughter and Dalton's stumbling feet thundered out along the thin hallway. Anna's humming — gentle, sometimes trembling — was in the kitchen
