Morrison Family Apartment – South Fairbridge

The flat remained the same.

Leya stood there, screwed-up coat firmly tied over the gusts, heels still trembling with the marble cold of Blackwood. But the wind was now heavy with the scent of boiled yam, petrol, and rain in the afternoon — not with the scent of lavender polish and old money.

She'd said nothing to anyone, not even to herself, in fact.

Exhaustion had brought her to a conclusion about herself.

She'd rehearsed it all: sitting with her mother and speaking — the wedding, the bargain, the silence, the cruelty. How she would speak the words out loud, and spoken, she would not carry their weight.

She raised her hand to knock.

Before she could, the door opened.

"Leya?"

Her mother's voice was a lightness of surprise.

And something else.

"Hello, Mama," Leya said, glaze of breath on the air. "May I come in?"

It was warm inside, smells she knew: spice, fabric softener, rice on the stove.

It was entering an

---Blackwood Mansion – 12:54 A.M. – Back GateHer sleeves offered little insulation from the cold, but Leya stood stock still. She was immobilized before the security light mounted on top of the garden perimeter fence, its faint bulb hardly illuminating a beam across the wrought-iron gate that marked the outside boundary of the estate.Stone walls and secrets behind her.The world she had known before her.Footsteps.She turned around."Leya?" Shayla's voice broke the quiet. She had on a long coat, her hair tucked back, concern in every step.Leya nodded slowly. "Thanks for coming."Shayla rushed to her, face scoured. "You look… Leya, what's wrong?"Instead of answering, Leya handed her the envelope.Thick. Clipped closed. Unopened.Shayla stared at it, puzzled. "What is this?""It's for Dalton," Leya whispered. "It's enough to pay for what's left."Shayla's hand shook. "Wait—what? You got it? How—""I can't tell you now," Leya interrupted her, her voice against a low, unyielding ton

Blackwood Mansion – The Evening Leya Came HomePurple-black the sky hung over Blackwood Estate, clouds leaking like stigmata into the stars. Her heels clicked on pebbles as she got out of the taxi, but Leya did not turn her shoulder to glance back at the driver. She didn't even say the word for it.Her fingers were cold. But the cold was not the wind.It was the stench of antiseptic from the hospital, the hum of equipment sluicing over her brother's broken body, her mother's fingers around her hands as if she grasped the rim of the world. Her mother attempted to be brave. She always did.But Leya caught it—the apologia appended to the end of every sentence she never got to say.We didn't want to trouble you at all…"You already have your hands full…""They'd think we're just after money…"But Leya didn't require anything more from the Blackwoods these days. She required Dalton—required his rumble laughter, required his crooked smile, required the way he'd toss his school pack around h

--- Blackwood Manor – Late Afternoon The house was too quiet. Not the usual, cultured quiet that the Blackwoods were renowned for — the kind that hummed through hand-painted curtains and a hundred-year-old walls. This was different. It was the kind of quiet that had space. Too much space. And Harrison felt it. Not initially. But with time. --- 2:12 p.m. – Drawing Room He strode through the drawing room without looking up from his phone. Eleanor was reading. Vivian was filling her second glass of wine. Normalcy. Except. No teacup sat alongside the piano. No scent of fresh lavender polish. No soft footsteps tiptoeing back behind him and forth in the sitting area with a tray. He said nothing. But the absence pierced him. --- 3:45 p.m. – Corridor Outside the Library He entered the hallway. Crossed Gresham. Stopped. "Has she been here?" he snapped, too curt. Gresham blinked. "Sir?" "Leya." The butler adjusted his tie. "Not since this morning early. She hasn't ret

---Blackwood Mansion – Early MorningLast night's rain had deposited water over the gravel driveway and had caused it to glisten. The mist was settling low over the hedges. Outside, everything was quiet — monastic even. But inside, there was a letter.Folded.Neat.Unobtrusive.Leya had penned it in the dead of night, woken up by yet another dream about her dad — the echoes of his voice in her head, loud and continuous, "Even when no one listens, tell the truth anyway."So she had.She hadn't done it out of self-defense. Or sympathy. Or pardon. She'd done it to be heard — again — before she gave up.> Harrison,I never took the necklace. You didn't even ask.You imagined them because it was easier than speculating about whether they were lying to you or not.I never married you for money.I never begged to be included within your family.I merely wanted some space to breathe.I will never crawl back for your safety again. You'd already given them the right to kill me by doing nothing

---Blackwood Mansion – The Next MorningSunlight had cut the lace on Leya's bed like glass scattered with pale. Far. Away.Leya hadn't slept. Not quite. Her body had slept, spread out over a half-finished blanket, but her mind had walked dark halls, locked inside her eyes, whispering all the things they'd screamed at her yesterday.> "Beggar.""Leech.""Embarrassment.""Get out.".Each word is constructed of wet, dead sounds, obstinately will. But Leya didn't bleed. Not that they could see.And that scared them.DoneDoneDoneDoneDoneDoneDoneDoneDoneServants' Corridor – 8:00 A.M.Standing in the doorway to the scullery, folding napkins in creased and mechanical hands."Juliet says Nathaniel's inquiring," Clara panted. "Inquires about the necklace. Inquires about the night in question."Leya did not lift her eyes. "Let him.""He's inquiring."This time Leya's hands shook over the cloth. She looked down at the linen — white, clean, folded."I cried," she breathed. "It did not ma
