The name Silverfang echoed in Sebastian’s mind like a song he couldn’t silence. Even as his horse’s hooves beat against the earth and the Shadowfang borders crept closer, that name refused to leave him. It pulled at something inside, a strange tug he couldn’t explain, and his wolf stirred restlessly.

Caius rode beside him, eyeing him with concern. “You’ve been quiet since dawn.”

“I’m fine,” Sebastian muttered, though his voice lacked its usual strength.

Lies, his wolf growled. You feel it too. That name Silverfang calls to us. Something waits there. More than duty, more than politics.

Sebastian clenched his jaw. He had learned to ignore the riddles his wolf often spoke in, but this unease was different. He felt it in his chest like a storm waiting to break.

The Shadowfang border loomed before them. Sebastian had heard whispers about his uncle’s pack all his life. His father had forbidden him from ever stepping foot inside it always calling it “for protection.” Only now did Sebastian begin to understand why.

The land felt heavy, the trees dark and sorrowful. Guards at the gate glared at them with open disdain.

“State your business,” one barked.

“I’m here to see Alpha Lucian,” Sebastian said, his voice steady.

The guards exchanged looks, then burst into laughter. “And who are you supposed to be? A human?” one mocked. “Our Alpha doesn’t waste time on weaklings.”

Sebastian’s wolf roared inside him, scratching to be let out. We are royal blood! They dare mock us? Let me show them who we are!

Before Sebastian could lose control, the guards noticed Caius. Their arrogance vanished instantly. They lowered their heads.

“Beta Caius,” one murmured with respect.

Sebastian’s wolf growled with fury. They bow to him and not to you? I will not endure this insult!

Silence, Sebastian snapped inwardly, though it took everything in him to leash his wolf.

Caius stepped forward smoothly. “We request an audience with Alpha Lucian.”

The guards obeyed at once.

As they moved deeper into Shadowfang territory, Sebastian’s unease grew worse. The women they passed wore hollow smiles, their eyes lifeless. Some bore faint bruises they tried to hide, while others moved as though weighed down by exhaustion and sorrow.

Sebastian’s wolf paced angrily. This place reeks of pain. Look at them. Can’t you hear their cries?

His fists clenched at his sides. “Something is very wrong here,” he whispered.

Caius nodded grimly. Even his wolf stirred uneasily. This pack… is rotten, it murmured to him.

By the time they reached the Alpha’s residence, the corruption was suffocating. Then came a sound a piercing scream, a woman’s desperate cry for help.

Sebastian froze. His wolf lunged wildly. She needs us! Let me out! We cannot ignore this!

“No,” Sebastian hissed, chest heaving. “Not now. Not here.”

Reckless fool, his wolf snapped. You call saving a life reckless? You are too bound by chains!

Caius gripped his arm. “Control yourself. This is exactly what your father warned you about. Don’t lose it here.”

Moments later, the doors opened, and Alpha Lucian appeared.

“Well, well,” Lucian drawled, a smile curling on his lips though his eyes stayed cold. “Isn’t this my sister’s son?”

Sebastian bowed respectfully, though every instinct screamed against it. His wolf snarled, This man is poison. He reeks of cruelty. We should never have come.

When Sebastian explained his mission to visit packs, to understand their people, to prepare for the throne Lucian’s smile faltered. Disdain flashed openly across his face, but Sebastian didn’t waver.

At last, Sebastian leaned toward Caius and murmured, “It’s time we leave.” His chest burned with the need to escape.

The moment they crossed out of Shadowfang territory, his wolf howled in relief. Finally! Away from that cursed ground. Do not bring us back there.

Sebastian frowned. “Why are you so eager now?”

Because ahead lies Silverfang, the wolf said, its voice pulsing with strange excitement. And there… something awaits. I don’t yet know what, but I feel it in my bones.

The journey to Silverfang took two long days. With each passing mile, Sebastian’s wolf grew more restless, pacing, growling, even whining. The tension was unbearable.

“Are you all right?” Caius asked finally, concern deepening. His own wolf was unsettled. Something stirs in him, it whispered to Caius.

“My wolf has been strange since the moment we spoke of Silverfang,” Sebastian admitted. “It’s like he’s being pulled there like something is waiting for us.”

Caius’s brows shot up. “You mean… there’s a connection?”

“Yes,” Sebastian said firmly. “He insists Silverfang holds the answer.”

As the Silverfang borders came into view, the air itself changed sharper, clearer, carrying a scent both familiar and haunting.

Sebastian’s wolf froze, then let out a desperate whine. Do you smell that? The scent… from that night. The one burned into us.

Sebastian’s breath hitched. He knew immediately.

“My mate,” he whispered, voice trembling.

Caius’s eyes widened. “Are you saying… she’s been here all along?”

Inside, Sebastian’s wolf howled in rage and joy. She is here. But something is wrong. Her scent is twisted, different. There is more to this than you know.

And as the gates of Silverfang rose before them, Sebastian understood one thing: this wasn’t just destiny. It was the start of a truth far darker and far deeper than anything he had ever imagined.
