Chapter 5

Author: Chihuahua
When Lyra woke up, the first thing she saw was a pair of worried eyes.

Joel shot up and called the doctor, finally breathing out when they confirmed she was okay.

Lyra glanced at her left wrist—a bracelet with a cross. Looked just like Joel's.

The assistant nearby smiled. "You were out for so long, Mr. Fenwick gave you his bracelet. Even prayed last night that if you woke up, he'd give up drinking and smoking for good."

Lyra frowned, sliding the bracelet off and holding it out. "Don't change your habits for me."

Joel didn't take it, just slid it back onto her wrist. "Didn't you make vows like that when you prayed for me back then?"

Her heart clenched.

Back in Joel's second year of being disabled, she'd heard that making a wish at Everlight Cathedral in Lindale was supposed to be especially powerful. One night, she took him there.

They wrote their wishes on paper slips. Hers said: [I'd give up everything to make Joel healthy again.]

Joel's slip said he wanted to marry her in five years. When she saw it, her eyes burned with tears. Joel pulled her into his arms and held her for what felt like forever. Those were the rare moments when his eyes were only on her—when Renee wasn't around.

But now that Renee was back in Khelmark, she knew his focus would never be on her again.

She glanced at Joel's eager expression, like he was waiting for praise, and looked away. "I'm a bit tired."

When Lyra woke up, it was already afternoon.

She sat up, ready to ask the doctor about getting discharged, but froze when she caught voices from the hallway.

Evelyn sounded curious. "So, when's the wedding with Lyra?"

Joel's voice was flat. "End of the month. I told her before."

Evelyn nodded. "Make it grand. The gifts better be top-tier—nothing cheap. Lyra gave her bone marrow to your little sweetheart, remember? You owe her that much."

Then her tone shifted, like something just clicked. "Weird coincidence—your wedding's this month, and I heard the Windsors are planning one too. The bride's name's Lyra... crazy, right?"

Lyra didn't let them keep talking—she shoved the door open and cleared her throat, making them both shut up immediately.

That evening, the doctor gave the all-clear for discharge.

Back home, Lyra got a friend request—Weston Windsor.

Must be the guy she was supposed to marry. She hit accept, and almost instantly, he sent over a gift list.

The document was packed—line after line of meticulous details. Just skimming made her head spin.

Two more messages popped up.

[Here's the wedding gift list. Let me know if it's satisfactory.]

[Mrs. Lebeau said your flight is the day after tomorrow, and you'll arrive the morning after that. I'll be at the airport with her to pick you up.]

Lyra thought for a second before typing back.

[The gifts are enough. Thank you.]

He didn't respond, and she didn't bother checking again.

That night, Joel kept trying to chat her up, but Lyra barely gave him the time of day. Figuring she was still mad about earlier, he decided to fix it by planning a pre-wedding bachelor party. He had his assistant spread the word, and by evening, the place was packed.

As soon as Lyra showed up, Joel wrapped his arm around her waist and handed her a car purchase contract, his eyes fixed on hers.

"I kept thinking that last supercar didn't really suit you, so I ordered a new one."

Then he hesitated, shooting a quick glance at Renee, who looked all delicate and pitiful by the sidelines. Reluctantly, he handed her the original Lamborghini contract.

"Renee, this car was originally for Lyra, but since she's got a new one now, you can have it. Sorry if it's a bit lacking."

Renee's face lit up; she was trying to play humble.

"It's okay—today's all about Lyra."

But anyone could tell she was thrilled. The Lamborghini was a limited edition from Khelmark, while Lyra's new car was just a regular, though pricey, model.

Guests nearby couldn't help but whisper.

"Is Joel really marrying Lyra? This is supposed to be their bachelor party, but he's giving gifts to Renee?"

"Yeah, right. Just an excuse to hand that limited edition car to Renee."

"Everyone knows Lyra's obsessed with cars. Total slap in the face."

"Shh, I heard Renee's some kind of racing prodigy. Rumor has it she's Vesper—saved Joel's life on the track. That's how he fell for her in the first place..."

Lyra, sitting in the corner, frowned.

Vesper?

Wasn't that... her?

Lyra clocked Renee's bitter stare and casually held up a financial report."See that? Lebeau Corp's finally in the black. Took a year, but we did it."Then she pulled out her phone, tapped open a wedding pic from last week."Weston and I got married. Honestly? Thanks. Your constant flexing about Joel was the shove I needed. If you hadn't gone so hard, I might've stayed. Crazy, right? Married my childhood crush. The internet's eating it up."She said it all with a sweet little smirk.Weston shot Lyra a look—soft, adoring. He'd never seen her like this before. Feisty. Cute. Kinda dangerous.Across the glass, Renee's eyes burned. In her head, Lyra was still the girl who got lucky. She'd only ditched Joel for a minute. Lyra had swooped in.But how was she the one Joel died protecting? How did Weston freaking Windsor end up marrying her?Renee sneered. "Brag all you want, Lyra. Doesn't change the fact that I've got your bone marrow. I'm alive because of you. Bet that haunts you."W

In the hospital room.Lyra stood by the bed, staring at what was left of Joel—thin, still, pale. His chest barely moved. Then he saw her—and for the first time in days, he smiled. Just a flicker. He reached for her hand, voice barely hanging on."Lyra, don't cry. I'm sorry... I messed up. I mean it this time. Don't feel guilty because I'm gone. Just... can you hold me? One last time?"She bent down and wrapped her arms around him, voice cracked."Don't die... Grandpa Dominic still needs you..."Joel gave a soft, breathless laugh. He looked past her, out the window, where Weston stood waiting. Then his eyes found hers again, full of something between regret and peace."Congrats on your marriage, my Lyra. I really hope you stay happy."Lyra walked out in tears. In the hallway, Weston pulled her into his arms as she broke down, shaking."It's not your fault. Don't carry this."That night, the Fenwick family released Joel's obituary.Three days later was Joel's funeral.Lyra

Lyra barely glanced at the handwritten note Joel held out. She took it, ripped it to shreds, and stared him down."Now that it's torn, can you fix it?"Joel's fists clenched. His voice cracked. "People mess up... Can't you give me a chance to fix this?""I don't want to. You're not worth it."Her tone was calm, like she was talking about old news. She looked away, voice soft. "I really did love you once, Joel. But now... I don't. Not even a little."People always thought she was the forgiving type. But when she made a decision, that was it. Even if Weston had never come into her life, she would've chosen herself.Joel's face drained of color. Lyra kept going."For the five years I took care of you, I'm asking you to stop. Don't come looking for me again."She turned to Dominic, who'd stayed silent this whole time."Grandpa Dominic, I've said what I needed to say. Weston won't make another move on Fenwick Corp—but I hope you'll hold up your end of the deal."When Dominic asked

Dominic stared at his once-proud grandson, now kneeling before him for the first time. His face twisted with something he couldn't quite name."If giving up your position gets Lyra to see you, would you still go through with it?"Joel didn't blink. "I would."Dominic exhaled slow, then gave a small nod. "Alright."Joel bowed low, then tried to stand—but his legs buckled. The exhaustion and bruises caught up to him, and he hit the floor hard. For someone once built like a tank, passing out from a few hits was unreal.Dominic's chest tightened. He flicked his hand at the butler. "Get him to the hospital."***While out cold, Joel felt like he was stuck in a dream. He was back at Everlight Cathedral, five years ago. Lyra stood beside him, scribbling a wish on a paper slip.Suddenly, he pulled her in, his voice shaking. "Lyra, let's go get our marriage license. We'll have the wedding party tomorrow."She pushed him off, calm but firm. "I'm not marrying you. You'll just break my

Joel vanished from livestreams for two weeks straight. People figured he'd flaked—just another bored billionaire chasing clout. But when he came back? Total shock.Bandages wrapped around his head, face ghost-white, like he'd been through hell.Turned out, he had.During those two weeks offline, Joel put himself through everything Lyra had endured—the pain, the loneliness, the betrayal.By the time he showed his face again, he looked wrecked. Eyes bloodshot, regret written all over him."I get it now. I finally understand why she walked away. I owe her more than an apology."People who'd been dragging him online started holding back. Some even dropped respect in the chat.[Didn't think I'd say this, but Joel Fenwick's got guts. That took serious nerve.][Most rich dudes cheat and move on. He's out here trying to grow. That counts. Lyra should forgive him.]But not everyone was sold.[I heard from someone close to the situation—Renee Slutz was a nightmare for years, and Joel

Lyra stared at Joel, his face twisted like he was the victim here, and let out a dry laugh."Why would I want anything from you? I said I never wanted to see you again—did you think I was kidding? Wasn't it your dream to marry Renee and pop out kids with her? Congrats, the coast is clear. Go chase your fantasy."Then it hit her—while she was playing nurse during his injury, he'd still been wiring money to Renee overseas.Touching. In a twisted, pathetic way.Joel's eyes lost their usual spark. He stepped closer like that would undo everything."It was all Renee," he said, voice shaky. "She tricked me—said she was Vesper. That's why I treated her like that. But I know now. It's always been you."I made her get an abortion. I made her pay. We can still fix this, Lyra. We were good once, right?"His voice cracked. "Just think about it... we had something real."Lyra drifted for a second, caught in the past.Joel's mom never liked her. Thought she wasn't good enough. Kept pushing
