Chapter 2

作者: Washing Wheat
A chill ran through me as I remembered how my sisters were always out from dawn till dusk, coming home reeking of blood, griping about running into the cops again.

I thought of the news, day after day, cycling stories of criminals being rounded up and thrown into prison.

I couldn't drag them into this.

Lifting my head, I tried to plead with him one last time.

"Ms. Greco, my sisters are all working out of state—like, really far. There's no way they can come. Can I just write an apology letter, say I'm sorry, or take detention instead? Just please don't call them, okay?"

Ms. Greco let out a derisive snort.

"They're working out of state? It's no wonder you turned out to be such a shameless brat. And they can't come? That won't do. You think a kid like you can afford Giovanni's medical bills and compensation for emotional damages? Quit stalling and call them now!"

He stared at me with utter contempt.

"How much? I can—" I was about to say that I could pay it myself. It's a good thing I'd never actually used those black bank cards my sisters gave me.

But just then, Mr. Rossi stepped out and tossed a bank card straight at Ms. Greco.

"Ms. Greco, here's 500 thousand dollars—my donation to the school. I'm not asking for much. Just have Dante's sisters apologize and make things right. Otherwise, I'm going straight to the police to report him for assault. Once he's got a record, he can forget about ever getting into college."

Ms. Greco's eyes lit up the moment she saw that bank card.

She turned to me and solemnly said, "Dante, did you hear that? This is your last chance! Either you call your sisters right now to come pay up and apologize, or you get a criminal record and kiss college goodbye."

The words "criminal record" hit me like a needle stabbing straight into my brain.

I couldn't have a criminal record. If I went to jail, I wouldn't be able to take my exams. I still had to get into college and earn money to take care of my sisters in their old age.

As I looked at the bank card and Ms. Greco's snobbish, ugly face, tears suddenly welled up in my eyes. With trembling fingers, I finally turned on my phone.

"Ms. Greco, don't call the police. I-I'll call my sister."

With a trembling hand, I tapped the name at the top of my contact list—Sofia.

She might be a Donna, but of all my sisters, she was still the gentlest one. She could pretend to be an ordinary person and get through this without any trouble.

The call connected the instant I dialed.

Sofia's gentle, smiling voice came through the receiver.

"What's up, Dante?"

I pressed my lips together and replied, "Sofia, Ms. Greco wants you to come over to the school. I—"

"Go to your school?" Her voice immediately perked up with excitement. "Oh wow, you won another award, didn't you? This is the first time you've ever asked me to pick up a certificate for you. Hold on. I'm coming right now."

"Wait, no." My heart clenched. I was about to say that it wasn't that when a crisp gunshot suddenly rang out from the other end of the line.

Then came the screams of men, followed by a rapid succession of muffled thuds.

I froze on the spot, catching the faintest whisper of someone saying, "Clean this up."

Memories from when I was a child came flooding back in an instant. Sofia would come home with blood on her every time, yet she'd lie and tell me that it was just ketchup.

Was she in danger right now? Was she hurt? My heart started pounding the second I thought about it.

The words on the tip of my tongue turned into something else entirely.

"I-It's nothing. I can pick the certificate up myself. Carry on with whatever you're doing. I'm hanging up now."

"Hey! Why are you hanging up? I'm not done talking yet!"

Five years later, I met my soulmate, Caterina Leone. She was a Forpol officer and had once fought alongside Elena while tracking down the Scorpio Organization. She admired my resilience, but what earned her deepest respect were the 109 sisters who raised me.When she came to meet the family for the first time, my sisters put on a spread that filled ten tables. They grilled her like they were interrogating a criminal, digging all the way back through 18 generations of her ancestry.Caterina survived it all.Facing 109 pairs of scrutinizing eyes, she said just one thing. "I will love Dante with everything I have for the rest of my life—just like all of you."Every woman in the room had her eyes go red in an instant. The wedding was held on Vittoria's private island. The red carpet was long. My 109 sisters lined up, each taking their turn to hold me. At the very end, Sofia looked at Caterina and said, "Remember, he will always be our younger brother."As I exchanged rings with C

The exam hall was so quiet that I could hear my own heartbeat. My pen flew across the page as I answered question after question. The final essay question was titled "My Biggest Supporters".A hundred and nine faces flashed through my mind—some gentle, some cold, and some untamed.I wrote about the mutual redemption between an abandoned baby and a group of fugitives—a decade-long struggle of darkness reaching toward the light. They gave up their violent ways for me, and I fought like hell to build a life worthy of them.As the pen tip raced across the paper, my tears fell onto the exam sheet. The proctor, Bruno Lombardi, walked over and placed two tissues at the corner of my desk without saying anything. The night the SATs ended, my sisters threw me a huge celebration party.I pulled out my college application form and placed it in front of all my sisters."I want to apply to the National Defense College of Science and Technology."Elena was so overcome that she dropped her w

Further in the distance, my seventh sister, Isotta Bianco, had somehow summoned a unit of international mercenaries. Their firepower was ferocious, cutting off every last escape route for the enemy.I sat in the cold chair in the basement, staring at the crisscrossing blaze of gunfire on the screen. My hands were shaking, but my gaze had never been more resolute. All of a sudden, a thunderous explosion rang out. The safe room door behind me, supposedly capable of withstanding a rocket attack, was blasted wide open.Three masked men charged in with their guns aimed straight at me.My mind went completely blank. At the very last second, a panel in the ceiling above me slid open without a sound.Dressed in a skintight black tactical suit, Martina descended from the ventilation shaft upside down, landing with the lethal grace of a hunting leopard."Lay a hand on Dante, and you're dead!"She took on three gunmen single-handedly, her movements so fast that she was nothing but a blur.

I tensed up. "Then does that mean you guys—""We're not afraid." Elena stood. She had already changed into a sleek black tactical suit, her eyes as sharp as a hawk's. "But your safety comes first. Starting today, you'll take a temporary leave from school and study at home. We're ramping up security."I shook my head immediately. "No. There are only two months left until my SAT, so I want to go to school like normal." I swept my gaze across every one of them. "And besides, if it means all of you have to hide and live in fear because of me, I'd rather—""Don't talk nonsense!" Sofia cut me off, her tone firm. "You'll keep going to school. However, we're assigning someone to be your personal bodyguard."The next day, when I walked into the classroom, I had two "transfer students" trailing behind me.My 92nd sister, Matilde Bianco, and my 38th sister, Anna Bianco—both former elite mercenaries—had cropped their hair short and were wearing the same school uniform as me. A jolt shot through Mr. Rossi. It was as if every bone had been ripped from him, and he collapsed to the floor in a heap. After a long moment, he mustered every ounce of strength he had left and answered, "I choose the second option."Then, Sofia's gaze fell back on Giovanni."As for you, here's what's going to happen. One, in front of the entire school, you will publicly apologize to Dante and to every single student you've ever bullied. Two, you will withdraw from the school voluntarily and transfer to a specialized correction school for psychological and behavioral intervention."Three, you will complete 500 hours of community service. Don't even think about getting someone else to do it in your place."Giovanni was trembling uncontrollably.I looked at him and added, "If you truly change your ways, I'll let you come work at my charitable foundation three years from now."Giovanni's head snapped up, his eyes filled with absolute disbelief. After everything was settled, Mr. R

"Right now, your personal trust fund has about this much in it," Alessia concluded. With trembling hands, I flipped open the first page and stared at the impossibly long string of zeros. My hands shook so badly that I nearly dropped the file on the floor.Sofia took the papers away and softly stroked my head."We originally planned to tell you all of this after you finished your SAT and turned 18 years old. But now that someone has bullied you right under our noses, we can't keep hiding it from you any longer."Dante, from this day forward, you don't have to put up with anything or anyone ever again. Even if the sky falls, you have 109 sisters to hold it up for you."Just as she finished speaking, the doorbell chimed.Valentina, standing closest to the door, pulled it open.Outside stood a trembling Giovanni and an ashen-faced Mr. Rossi, their hands full of gift boxes of all sizes. They stood frozen at the door, stripped of all their bluster.Valentina let them in expressionle
