Chapter 3

Author: Cloudseeker
Jasper cast me a suspicious look. Then, he suddenly broke into a smile.

"You can't possibly think that I harmed Sasha. Did you? Ari, I am still her biological father. It's just that the base camp came up with a new cryonics program, so I had her sent there.

"After all, Ave is right. One less person to worry about means more water for everyone else."

I couldn't hold myself back any longer and jumped to my feet. Then, I grabbed a nearby cushion and threw it at him.

"Jasper! You are Sasha's father!"

How could he be so heartless and send his own daughter for a cryopreservation experiment just because of something Avery said?

Yet, Jasper simply frowned and said, "Nothing's happening to Sasha. Avery already said that the program is very safe. Sasha won't die, and she won't have to suffer either. It's good for her.

"We'll be able to revive her when we finally return with a larger water source."

I didn't know what to say to him anymore. Couldn't Jasper have thought that if the cryopreservation program was really as safe as he said it was, why wasn't everyone scrambling to sign up for it?

I gripped the toy in my hand and cried silently.

"I must return!"

I had to go back and save my daughter!

"What sort of nonsense are you spouting now?"

Jasper flung the cushion to the floor, his temper flaring. "Avery already said that the program was very safe!"

I had never sensed Jasper's favoritism toward Avery as clearly as I finally did now. Even if Sasha was about to die, and even if I told him I was going back alone, his focus was still on blaming me for not trusting Avery's words.

I clenched my fists.

"Don't worry. I'll take the blame for everything. I won't let you ruin your reputation because of this."

If we came out searching for water and returned empty-handed, that only meant that we had wasted precious resources for nothing.

Jasper's voice was hoarse as he growled through gritted teeth, "Fine. Go back if you really want to. However, even if I were the one who personally called for transport from the base camp, it would take them at least ten days to arrive."

If there were no transport to bring me back to the base camp, I wouldn't be able to find my way back there. It would also be impossible for me to walk there on my own.

Jasper knew that I had to rely on him.

However, I didn't need him anymore. My personal rescue vehicle was already on its way to save me.

I never planned on telling him that. I just cast him one final glance before going back into my room.

I couldn't stop thinking about Sasha at night and didn't manage to fall asleep.

In my blurry, half-conscious state, I could sense Jasper getting up from beside me and heading out the door.

I immediately went out after him without hesitation.

It was still unbearably warm at night since it was the apocalypse. Under the moonlight, I saw Avery running into Jasper's arms in a long slip dress.

Jasper gently wrapped his arms around her.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

"You gave me all that water. I was sure that Ari would get mad at you for that, so I came to check on you."

Jasper chuckled softly and let her into our quarters with affection in his eyes.

Avery then asked in a coquettish voice, "Aren't you worried that Ari would get the wrong idea?"

Jasper scoffed loudly.

"I was meant to be yours anyway. There's no need to care about her. She'll be going back in two days. Finally, we'll be left on our own. When that time finally comes…"

I closed my eyes. I couldn't believe that the young man who once refused to let me shed a single tear was now breaking my heart and making me cry over and over again.

The last bit of my love for him completely faded away.

I went back inside my room. Just as I'd lie down, I suddenly saw that Jasper had just received a message on his communication device.

"Dr. Curran, another base camp has already located the person who first invented the water detection device. They're on their way to bring the inventor back. Please find the new water source and return before they bring the inventor to their base."

I rolled my eyes at Jasper and tapped my fingers against the table."I called you all here to discuss some serious matters. I hope that you can hold out on your personal matters for private discussion until after this meeting is over."The rest of the researchers immediately turned to look at Jasper. With no other choice, he gritted his teeth and sat back down. The meteorite contamination we discovered was far worse than we could have ever imagined. The best and only solution now was to remove the meteorite from its spot. However, it was a massive rock, and all of the researchers were equally stumped.Nobody knew if the radiation from the meteorite would cause any harm or even death. While everyone was at a loss for what to do, Jasper suddenly stepped forward and said, "I'll go first."He then looked at me like he was making a promise and said, "Since someone needs to scout it first, I have no other choice but to volunteer."Leo frowned, obviously not agreeing with what Jasper

After returning to Camp Arthor, I settled all of Sasha's paperwork and placed her at the hospital while Leo stayed by my side and followed me around."You know that you don't have to keep following me around, don't you? I'm just a regular researcher now," I said with a sigh. After arriving at this base camp, the water crisis had been temporarily resolved for now. But there was an even greater challenge on the way, and it required more attention. Every researcher was desperately trying to find a way to end the apocalypse. That was our life goal now.So, to protect the researchers' lives, Camp Arthor arranged for appointed people to ensure our protection wherever we went.Leo was assigned to ensure my safety, but since he was promoted to a colonel now, I felt that it was a waste of his talents.Meanwhile, he just treated it as a joke."You're being too humble, Dr. Grayson. Don't you know that you're the biggest celebrity at the base now? Everyone's falling over themselves wanting

"The reason Arianne Grayson was not registered was because your beloved Dr. Curran abused his position for personal gain, allowing Avery Grayson to impersonate Arianne's doctoral status so that she could leech points in the team!" Leo exclaimed.Everyone immediately turned to look at Jasper. Even I was completely taken by surprise. Jasper was the one who had helped me with the doctoral verification at the base camp. However, I had no idea that he had actually given the verification to Avery instead! The people looked at Jasper and Avery with contemptuous gazes. Jasper's face turned bright red at once. However, Avery was still indignant about it. "I am the Dr. Grayson you're all talking about! Arianne only used to be one in the past! I'm currently working at the research center too!"Someone scoffed."Idiot. If just working at the research center gave you a doctorate, then even the janitors would be doctors by now! Whether you received the doctorate status or not completely depen

Because this water source was a lot larger than any of the others we'd ever found before, it immediately triggered the location tracking mode in the water detection device.A short while after we'd returned to our temporary shelter, the base camp vehicle had also arrived.Jasper hurriedly dusted off his clothes and straightened them, preparing to step forward with a proud smile on his beaming face. Avery wrapped her hands around his arm, stepping forward with him."I didn't expect you to arrive so quickly. It's an honor for us, and we're proud to say that we've succeeded in our mission!" Jasper said with palpable excitement, offering his hand for a handshake.Moments later, the vehicle door opened, and a man got down from it with a gun in his hands. He had sharp facial features, his military uniform looked spotless, and he looked cold and unapproachable. However, when he fixed his gaze on me, a smile broke out on his face."You were even more capable than I imagined, Ari!" he sai

"What was in it?" Jasper asked in a deep voice.I looked at Avery, who was suddenly looking very pale and anxious."A pebble. And it looks like someone had only just thrown it in because the machine hasn't been damaged yet. It only malfunctioned for a bit."The team quietened down at once, and they turned to look at Avery.Jasper frowned too. However, Avery's eyes reddened at that moment as she said in a pitiful voice, "Maybe I didn't manage to look after the equipment well earlier and a pebble just fell into it. "I'll admit that it was my fault. But Arianne was being too fierce and aggressive with me!"I chuckled coldly and said nothing in return. Instead, I crouched over and began using the device to find any nearby water sources.Everyone now knew that Avery was the one at fault. However, since she had Jasper covering her ass, they didn't say anything against her.It was just that Avery was now being put in a very awkward situation. She realized it very quickly as well and

I had to find Jasper to get my food back from him when we left. It was going to be very crucial over the next two days, after all.On my way there, I saw Jasper sharing most of his food with Avery. They looked very intimate with each other and were clearly in love.As soon as Jasper saw me, he frowned and immediately shielded Avery, still holding the food, behind him."Arianne? You're not here to try and reason with me, are you?"I've already told you that the rescue vehicle won't be here for at least a few more days. However, I never said that I would let you take up one of the spots to return to the base."My gaze just fell on the diamond necklace on the ground, still lying untouched. I then shakily took off the ring on my finger and threw it onto the ground, along with the broken necklace.Jasper's face darkened as he watched me.Then, I smiled and said, "Don't worry about that. I don't need your help."Then, I walked past him toward Avery and snatched a few packages of rati
