Chapter 3

Autor: Yummy Yam
The days dragged on in tedious monotony.

Dominic and Sabine came to keep me company every single day.

Yet they never appeared at the same time.

A few days later, my condition had improved enough for Dominic to bring me home.

The car frame had taken the brunt of the impact, with us trapped inside by scattered debris.

Aside from a few cuts that were not too serious, we were both mostly unhurt elsewhere.

My injuries, however, were slightly more severe.

If the wound on my back didn’t heal properly, a nasty infection could follow.

The pair continued just as before, devoting all their energy into caring for me, avoiding each other all the while.

These past few nights, insomnia had taken hold of me.

Late one night, I suddenly caught the sound of Sabine crying.

Inside the bathroom, she was dry-heaving over and over.

Her eyes were swollen and rimmed red. She had clearly been weeping for a very long time.

Clutched in her hand was a pregnancy test: two distinct lines.

“Why did you have to come at a time like this? Mommy is in so much pain.”

Dominic placed his hand over her lower abdomen without a moment’s hesitation.

“You’re not getting rid of it! You must give birth to this child!

“You stripped away my right to be a father three years ago. Are you going to force me to go through that nightmare all over again?”

Horror crept over me, leaving my entire body ice-cold.

I was chilled through to the very core.

Three years ago, Sabine, for the sake of what she deemed my happiness, had aborted her own child.

No wonder.

No wonder she had suddenly fled abroad.

I collapsed onto the floor.

Overwhelming guilt suffocated and paralyzed my whole body.

I bit down on my lip, not daring to let a single sound escape.

So I wasn’t the only one who suffered the unbearable agony of losing a child.

This was how they had endured the past seven years.

I wanted so desperately to end it all and die.

I’d rather have died seven years ago on the day I went looking for my father.

I’d rather never have met Dominic or Sabine in this lifetime at all.

I swallowed a mouthful of blood, my palms punctured and bleeding from my own fingernails.

I had no idea how I managed to drag myself back to the bedroom.

All I registered was the enveloping scent of blood.

The pain was so brutally, vividly real.

I closed my eyes as memories flooded back.

It felt as if I were nineteen again, the day I first met Sabine.

I had just started college, and she was my classmate and roommate.

She taught me how to put on makeup, took me to explore all sorts of places, and always looked at me with a radiant smile.

How wonderful life was back then.

We hadn’t fallen in love with the same man.

We hadn’t lost children of our own.

And we hadn’t suffered through seven years of agonizing heartbreak.

My memories drifted further back to when I was sixteen.

I used to run over to Dominic’s house all the time, trailing behind him.

He always complained about how annoying I was, yet never once pushed me away.

Back then, he wasn’t as caring and attentive as he was now.

Yet he learned to bake my favorite cherry cobbler.

We were childhood sweethearts.

It was only because we attended different high schools later on that we gradually lost touch.

If only our crossing of fates had ended during the mid-term exams that year, how wonderful that would have been?

I wanted so badly to drown in those memories.

Yet when I opened my eyes, nothing had changed.

Sabine sat on the chair, nodding off in her sleepiness.

The moment she noticed I was awake, she perked up immediately.

She handed me a bowl of chicken veggie soup.

“Elaine, are you feeling any pain? You slept for the whole day.

“I just reheated this. Eat while it’s hot.”

She didn’t say it, but I knew anyway.

She had been waiting on me the whole day.

A week later, Dominic set about arranging my funeral. On the day of the funeral, Sabine hardly took a step outside the memorial hall. She kept gazing at my portrait, whispering non-stop apologies.“Elaine, are you doing well over there? Does your back still hurt? Are you cold?“I’m so sorry. Your death is on me.”Few relatives and friends came to offer their condolences, leaving the vast memorial hall mostly silent and desolate.Time trickled slowly away.Another week passed.Word came from the police that the suspect who had robbed and murdered me had been successfully apprehended and brought to justice. The moment Sabine learned the news, her body shook violently.Throwing caution to the wind, she rushed out the front door, desperately eager to confront the criminal in person, to demand justice for me, and to fight him with her very life.Dominic couldn’t stop her.Distraught and unseeing, she bolted into the middle of the road.A speeding driver was unable to swerve in time. The scr

The officers looked understanding.“Our condolences. If you could follow us back to the precinct for the identification.”Sabine bit her lower lip until it was raw, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. All through the drive to the precinct, the interior of the car remained silent as death.Sitting in the back seat, Sabine trembled uncontrollably from head to toe, muttering continuously under her breath.“It’s just a dream.“A bad dream, that’s all.“When I wake up, Elaine will be waiting safely at home.”When they reached the precinct, the heavy door of the mortuary loomed directly ahead.A frigid chill seeped out through the narrow gap in the doorway.Sabine’s feet seemed pinned to the floor, unable to lead her another step forward.“I’m not going in.”Her voice quivered. “Elaine’s not in there. She’s definitely back at home waiting for us.”The officer gently pushed the door open.A plain white sheet covered my body. The sheet was slowly pulled back and Sabine caught sight of my face

Time trickled away bit by bit.Dominic helped Sabine over to the sofa, sitting her down before pouring her a glass of warm water.According to the law, a missing person’s report required twenty-four hours to pass before it could be filed. From the moment of yesterday night’s phone call, not enough time had elapsed. The waiting hours were pure, excruciating agony in every single minute and second.Sabine was on edge, unable to settle down for even a moment. She picked up her phone repeatedly, dialing my number over and over again.Yet through the earpiece came only that same frozen, mechanical prompt announcing the phone was turned off. With every repetition of that prompt, the color drained a fraction more from her face. She kept muttering under her breath:“She has an unhealed wound on her back… what if the infection flares up…”She clutched her phone tightly with both hands, her knuckles turning white.“Why do we have to wait twenty-four hours just to file a police report? For every

Sabine immediately hurried toward Dominic, her eyes instinctively scanning the space behind him.It was empty, with no trace of me.Sabine’s heart sank in her chest.“Dominic, where’s Elaine?”She reached out and grabbed his arm, her fingers trembling uncontrollably.“I’ve searched everywhere in the apartment, but she’s nowhere to be found.“What did you say to her yesterday? Did you drive her away?”Dominic’s temples throbbed with a sharp pain.He lowered his eyes, avoiding her frantic and anxious gaze, his Adam’s apple bobbing heavily.“I didn’t say anything.”His throat was dry and raspy, a consequence of staying up the entire night.“I was at the hospital accompanying you through your tests all night.”“Then where could she possibly have gone?”Sabine’s eyes turned crimson in an instant, large tears splashing onto his arm.“How could a living person simply vanish into thin air…“The wound on her back hasn’t healed properly. It’s so cold outside at night, and she didn’t pack—where c

The moment he realized I was not in the house, Dominic panicked. He froze in place, his mind racing as he frantically tried to figure out where I could have gone.In the end, he headed for the cemetery. His guess was right.Unfortunately, he was several hours late.To reach the cemetery, he had to pass by that very alleyway. My ice-cold corpse lay inside, a gruesome sight to behold. It was already past midnight, and the cemetery gates had long been locked tight.Dominic stood outside the entrance for a very long time.Nearly two hours slipped by.The biting wind was beating down on his face, yet he didn’t budge an inch.I knew I was dead.I lost too much blood, dying in agonizing pain. Now I was floating in midair.Gazing at his numb face, I found myself puzzled.Clearly, the man didn’t love me.So why was he wandering through the dead of night just to look for me?Was it purely out of guilt?Could guilt be so strong a drive?Through the latter half of the night, Dominic never left.On

As I ate, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Dominic’s shadow. His body remained hidden around the corner, but I could see his hand gripping the doorframe, knuckles white and strained.Sabine reached out, about to tuck the blanket around me, but suddenly gasped in pain. She doubled over, her face draining of color in an instant.Dominic burst into the room at once.“What’s wrong?”“My belly… it hurts so bad…”He instantly gathered Sabine into his arms, turning to rush out the door.My hands trembled out of control, and the bowl of soup slipped, shattering on the floor.Dominic’s footsteps halted. It was as though he had just summoned every ounce of mental resolve within himself, his posture rigid.“I’m sorry.“I gave you my word, but I simply cannot stand by and watch her suffer.“This is the last time.”Without another word, Dominic carried Sabine away.Sabine’s hand lifted slightly in the air before falling back down, empty of strength.I opened my mouth, but my throa
