Clara's POV

"Oh, I don't mean any offense, but honestly, I was surprised to see you here in that ridiculous outfit. By the way, what are you doing? Do you work as their sales girl?" Zoe chuckled softly.

I noticed the sarcasm reflected in her gaze.

"Whatever I do is none of your business, Miss Sinclair. Excuse me, I have to go back." I cut her off; I didn't want to have any conversation with her.

But Zoe stopped me just as I was ready to leave her. She raised her left hand in front of my face, and the breathtaking diamond ring that was on her finger immediately drew my attention.

"Call me Mrs. Morgan." She said with delight, "Isn't this beautiful? This is not our official wedding ring, but James insisted I purchase it. He said it would look very beautiful on my finger."

The ring was indeed gorgeous, with a large diamond that sparkled brilliantly. The cost must have been very high. I held my clothes tightly, the weight of my wedding ring still resting on my finger.

And It was just a couple of days left until I would remove it forever.

"He's right. That's beautiful, Zoe. Excuse me I have to go back to work."

"Hold on, Clara. Honestly, what's wrong with you? Why are you so desperate to avoid me? You haven't even answered me whether you work for them or not."

She insisted, "Oh, but am I even asking you? I should've known. James might have put a hold on your card, doesn't he? You can't spend his money anymore and now you have to end up with a low job like this! I even wonder where James met a woman like you and even made you his contract wife."

I clenched my fists tightly. Afraid if I'm not, it would fly to Zoe's face.

"Watch your mouth, Zoe. Even though we are married, it had never crossed my mind to use his money to splurge."

I knew there was no point talking to this woman, so I decided to hurry. I heard Zoe's voice again calling out.

"I suggest you go home. What if one of the reporters recognizes you? With your status now, you will only embarrass James."

My heart ached to hear that. Yet there was nothing I could say to deny it because everything Zoe said was true.

When I returned, the cluster of reporters had scattered, and James, along with his entourage, had departed as well.

I let out a breath of relief, grateful that I wouldn't have to face him again, as it would only intensify the ache in my heart.

"Is everything alright?" Emma asked, and she handed me a water bottle.

I accepted it and drank the water greedily.

"Clara, was the woman with your husband earlier... was she his ex you're referring to?" Emma asked her hand on my shoulder.

"Yes," I nodded. Emma's expression immediately changed when she heard me. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing. I just heard that a woman is very rude and arrogant. A friend of mine who is a reporter mentioned that her on-camera demeanor contrasts sharply with her off-screen personality. Doesn't James at least think twice before divorcing you and choosing her instead?"

I could only give a thin smile. No matter what Zoe's personality is, she is the woman he loves and always will.

"Come on, let’s not think about it, Emma." I soothed her.

I knew Emma noticed the remnants of tears in my eyes no matter how I tried to hide it.

"Let's get back to our work," I said, and Emma nodded.

We wrapped up just as the sun dipped below the horizon, and our stand began to settle into a calm hush.

After hours of standing in heels, my muscles and joints felt achy. That's when our manager said that another important customer would be arriving to tour the place in fifteen minutes.

"Who is he?"

"A billionaire. We can't miss his visit; perhaps there's a car that catches his interest."

Emma and I exchanged a weary sigh upon hearing that. She and the others went back to the front to welcome the important customer, while I was asked to prepare a drink for him.

As I was about to serve the drink, an unexpected wave of anxiety washed over me.

I assured myself that James and Zoe had left, so it seemed unlikely that I would cross paths with them again.

"Clara, please serve it to Mr. Morgan." Bill, our boss, said.

I was walking when I suddenly halted at the mention of the name Bill spoke. Stuck in the moment, my gaze was locked on the customer.

Just like me, he rose from his chair and fixed his gaze on me.

Our customer is a very handsome and young man. He donned a sleek black suit that complemented his tall, athletic body perfectly.

"Clara?" His blue eyes widened.

I was at a loss for words because the man before me was none other than Keith Morgan, James' younger brother.

Keith's POVIt's hard to stay calm, to find comfort amidst the irritating buzz of conversation and the clinking of glasses. And to be honest, I can't keep up the act; just fifteen minutes into this gathering, and I'm already over it. I need to get back to my penthouse.Since my hospitalisation, I've been a ghost in the real world, and curiosity about my well-being is beginning to stir among those who know me. Rumours begin to spread, and my good name is threatened. My mom insisted that I should make a public appearance at least for a bit, just to clear things up.So here I am.The light from the flash is moving in my way, and I can feel my head rhythmically beating."Mr. Keith, will you mind to-""Get out of my way," I walked past the paparazzi. The man was nudged to the side, nearly losing his grip on the camera. The crowd of people waiting behind him stood there, jaws dropped in disbelief. This isn't how I usually present myself, but tonight, I honestly couldn't care less.I feel

Clara's POV"Is this ball like the ones we usually see in movies?" Layla's voice caught my attention. I glanced at the couch, where she was sitting, and Lily was helping her with her shoes. My daughter is wearing a beautiful, soft baby pink dress. James sent over all the essentials for this gathering—our outfits, shoes, and jewellery. And he was adamant that Layla and I wear them on. He wouldn't let me dress her in the clothes I brought back from New York. "Of course. It’s going to be a lot of fun. You'll meet a lot of people too." Lily said to her. "Who?" Layla tilted her head, a spark of curiosity shining in her bright blue eyes. “Who are they, Auntie?”Lily turned to me, her expression filled with concern, as if she were seeking my help to respond to my daughter's question. I just mentioned to Layla that we were heading to a ball, but I kept the details about what kind of gathering it was to myself. Now she's curious about what this ball is all about."Are they mommy's friends?

Clara's POVA strange sensation washed over me as I stood in front of the massive closed door. The door creaked open, and there was Sarah, her smile lighting up the moment she spotted me. I've called her to tell her that I’d been in LA a few days back, yet she still couldn’t hold back her surprise when she saw me.Yes. After giving it some thought, I chose to fly to LA again and go to the gathering that James asked me to. Walking back into the house I had been away from for months felt strange. I hadn't lived in this house for very long, the house that the late Mr. George had passed down to me. Initially, I expected to feel out of place being back here, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I felt right at 'home.'"Welcome back, ma'am," Sarah said as I stepped in, holding Layla's hand.A different maid grabbed my suitcase from me and brought it up to my room on the second floor. Sarah led us into the living room. The arrangement of this room hasn't changed since my last visit.

Clara's POV"What? He wanted you to join him at his family gathering?" Lily's eyes went wide in surprise. The response was just as I anticipated.I can't be the only one who found James' request completely ridiculous. I didn't respond immediately when he showed up yesterday to ask for it. I needed some time to think it over, and James was alright with giving me three days to make my decision. The first person I reached out to was Lily. I was relieved that she was open to hearing my story and took the time to come here this morning."But what about his devilish new wife? That woman definitely won't hold back if she spots you and Layla at the gathering. I just hope she doesn't end up doing anything that might hurt you, Clara." Lily said.I sat quietly, my mind racing with thoughts. This question kept popping into my mind. I wasn't sure if Zoe would show up at the event after her divorce. But still, she might have gotten some information from Iris Morgan.Speaking of Iris, what woul

James' POVWatching my mother raise her hand to Clara filled me with a surge of anger.I thought it couldn't get any worse until I noticed how tightly Clara was clutching her face. She remained silent, offering no response at all. I let go of my mother's hand a bit too forcefully, and even Clara seemed taken aback. Her eyes grew wide, and the hand that had been shielding her face dropped, revealing the distinct red mark on her cheek. The place where my mother just slapped her a slap. Her eyes pleaded with me to stay silent, but rage had already consumed me.I pulled Clara closer; the instinct to shield her from my own mother was just overwhelming."Wife?" My mother raised an eyebrow, her voice completely lacking in guilt. "Did you really just call her wife, James? The woman who has turned you against your brother?""Clara didn't turn me against anyone." I began to get sick of my mother constantly saying that. She said as though Clara was to blame for what happened to Keith. As if he

Clara's POVWhen I stepped out of my bedroom, James was already in the living room, waiting for me. His fingers intertwined, and even though his face remained expressionless, I could see that guilt was starting to pull at his heart. Good sign. At least he still had some emotions, not entirely devoid of emotion as he tried to be."I'm ready," I said as I stood in front of him. We're going to the hospital to see Keith today. Keith was taken to the hospital due to some injuries he got from James's attack last night. Last night, when Keith, who was drunk, was trying to force himself onto me, James showed up right on cue. Their fight was relentless. I have to shout to get the people around me to help separate them.James stood from the sofa. "Let's go.""When we get there, I want you to say sorry to him. Don't say anything that might set him off. Just this once, can you be the one to back down?" I said as we stepped out of my apartment. We stepped into the elevator heading to the parking

  • Second Chance For Him?   231. Dimmed light

Keith's POVHave you ever felt that moment when you finally get what you want, yet it leaves you with an emptiness? The satisfaction, happiness, and sense of victory that should have accompanied it, seem to just vanish into thin air.I feel completely empty, lacking any sense of fulfillment even after finally being able to breathe the fresh air outside the damned cell. This should be the moment for me to go ahead and carry out my plan. Without Clara by my side, the spark of life within me has... faded away. What did I do wrong? What did I do to deserve her hatred?Maybe, I have gone too far. But believe me, I did this solely because I wanted her to return to me, as she was meant to. Clara belongs to me.Back in those times when my brother treated her more like a disgrace than a wife, I was always there by her side. I knew that her life had been never easy, so I ensured that in our fake and cold social sphere, she had at least one person she could truly call a friend. This feeling tha

  • Second Chance For Him?   230. A friend of hers

Clara's POVI finally met up with Lily on the same day. But not at the penthouse where her friend took her; instead, it was at one of the cafes. Lily said that her friend is somewhat shy and doesn't like to meet new people. I don't mind about the meeting location, as long as I can finally see her and make sure she's okay."Clara," Lily got to her feet as soon as I got to her table. I was silent, completely at a loss for words. What left me utterly speechless wasn't her, but rather her 'friend.' So this is the man she has been calling friend all along? I needed to raise my gaze when he finally got up. I'm not sure of his exact height, but it's pretty obvious that he's around 6,7 feet tall. He's so handsome, but not in the typical way that most looks. I have no idea where Lily even met him. "Hey, you must be Clara. Great to meet you." He said, reaching out his hand. I accepted his handshake even though the way he was looking at me made me feel a shiver down my spine. It feels like

  • Second Chance For Him?   229. What she has in mind

Clara's POV"We’ve located the address. It's still in New York." James said. I quickly got up and made my way over to him and his subordinates who assisted us in locating Lily. Since I didn't have much information about her actual location, we just tracked her using the number she called me. I have no idea whose number it was. James shared with me the outcome of Lily's whereabouts. And sure enough, it's still in New York City. I narrowed my eyes, spotting the spot where the phone number was located. The area felt somewhat familiar.I realized it's due to its spot in the city center; the location is pretty upscale. But Lily mentioned that she was kidnapped. I never even thought about this place before. The person who kidnapped her definitely wasn't poor; they could afford to live in that neighborhood. "Do you happen to know anyone who lives there, Miss? Could it be her friend?"I just shook my head. Unfortunately, I don't know who Lily's friends are around here. I don't have their
