Rebecca Nolan, the widow of my husband's late friend, shows up at our door, claiming that her daughter is critically ill. She pleads with Declan Smith, my husband, to be the debt guarantor for her 100-thousand-dollar loan. In my past life, after learning that the actual amount was 5 million dollars, I locked Declan in the house to keep him from helping Rebecca. Rebecca, unable to come up with the money, took her daughter to the rooftop, where they jumped to their deaths. Declan and Edward Smith, our son, refused to speak to me from that day onward. Declan became a successful businessman ten years after that. He wore watches worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and spent tens of thousands of dollars on his meals, yet he just stood by while I was sick, refusing to give me a single penny for treatment. He told me I deserved this and that I should spend the rest of my life paying for what had happened to Rebecca and her daughter. Edward never returned home after getting accepted into Bremerton University, one of the top universities in the country. He sent me a letter on my birthday, with a dropout notice tucked inside. "Do you think you deserve to be proud of my achievements? I deliberately applied to Bremerton University just to drop out once I got accepted. I want all the time and effort you put into me for half your life to be wasted. "I'm going to Avoria to help those in need, and I won't be returning to Caldoria. You can consider this your punishment for standing by and letting them die." I eventually fell into depression and died alone in my rented apartment. Declan buried me right next to Rebecca, saying that even in death, I must continue atoning to them. He then stood before Rebecca's grave and shed a tear. "I finally have the money, but you're no longer here, Rebecca." I open my eyes and find myself back on the day Rebecca shows up at our front door. Declan immediately gets to his feet. "I'll be the debt guarantor for you, so let's get to it." I remain calm and contact a lawyer. "You can do it, but we're getting a divorce first."

Chapter 1

No one cared about what I had to say.

Declan Smith, my husband, grabbed the car keys off the coffee table and said, "Let's go, Rebecca. Your daughter's health comes first."

Edward Smith—my eight-year-old son—stood in front of Rebecca Nolan, the widow of Declan's late friend, eyeing me cautiously. "Stay out of it, Mom."

I didn't spare any of them a glance. I called my lawyer, Helen Lawson, and said, "I'm getting a divorce, so please draft the paperwork right now, Ms. Lawson. I'll send you the complete list of our assets within 20 minutes."

I then called my mother. "I'm getting a divorce, Mom, so I need you to come pick me up."

I ended the call and looked up. "I won't stop you if you want to stand surety for her, but we're getting a divorce first."

In that instant, everyone in the room fell silent.

Declan's expression hardened. "Are you threatening me with divorce, Willa?"

I took out my camera and began looking for a suitable angle to film from.

Rebecca burst into tears. "I-I don't need you to do that for me anymore, Declan. I'll leave right now…"

She choked on a tear and turned around, only for Declan to grab her wrist. She trembled slightly, looking extremely fragile, and said, "I don't want your family to fall apart because of me…"

Declan held his head high, as if claiming the moral high ground. "You know how close I was to Rebecca's husband, Willa. He's not here anymore, so I'm obliged to take care of his wife and daughter."

He paused for a moment before stating gravely, "I'm standing surety for her today, and that's final."

Edward gritted his teeth and tugged on my hand, pleading with me for the first time ever. "Please just agree to it, Mom. If you do, I promise I'll never misbehave again, and I'll even get perfect scores on every test!"

I looked down at him and remained silent. It turned out that all the effort I had put into his upbringing had just become a weapon for him to use against me for an outsider's sake.

Edward apparently thought I was starting to give in and quickly added, "If you treat Rebecca well, I promise I'll stop being picky with my food, stop staying up late on my phone, and I'll obey you completely."

Declan looked over at me, his tone taking a milder turn. "We can try for another child once Rebecca's situation is settled, making your dream of having both a son and a daughter come true. Go take out all the money we have at home and come to the bank with me—"

I burst out laughing, stunning Declan and Edward. I set the camera on the TV cabinet, framing the whole room in the shot. "Let's get everything on record, Declan. That way, you can't blame me later for not stopping you or try to make me responsible for your debts."
