Chapter 489

Author: Cloud Drop
Mark knew the truth. If nothing else, just in terms of shares, Archer held more than anyone else in the company. Add in Aaron and Anson, who were firmly on his side, and together, the three of them practically made the Duncan Industries a one–family show.

If Archer wanted him gone—whether that meant firing him or sending him to the South Pole—no one could stop him.

Fuming, Mark’s mind went blank for a moment, but the sharp trill of a ringtone cut through his anger. Archer glanced at the caller ID, and a faint smile touched his eyes.

He didn’t bother stepping away. Right in front of Mark, he answered.

“It’s me,” he said.

On the other end came Aria’s soft, slightly apologetic voice.

“Mm.” Archer’s lips curved, his tone laced with warmth.

Even with her not physically there, just hearing her voice was enough to make him stub out his cigarette and set it in the ashtray.

It was work hours, and she was worried she might be interrupting. But she had wanted to call him the moment she co

“Hm?” Archer heard a trace of shyness in her voice. He had no idea what she was about to say, but figured it was something he’d enjoy hearing. He straightened up in his chair, turning his back to Mark so that he was facing the floor-to-ceiling window. Through its reflection, he slowly adjusted his suit jacket.“Sorry I didn’t say goodbye this morning. And…I love you.”Aria blurted it out in one breath. Before Archer could respond, she hung up.It wasn’t the first time she had told him that, but her heart still raced afterward, like she had just finished a hundred-meter sprint. Sometimes, random, anxious thoughts would creep into her mind—like how she had snapped at Archer earlier without saying goodbye. What if something happened to him on the way to work? What if she never got another chance to tell him goodbye? If the last thing he saw was her angry face, how much would she regret it?It was ridiculous, like something out of a TV drama—but she made a mental note anyway: even if

Couples always ended up having little spats now and then. Later, looking back, those arguments seemed so trivial that she could barely remember what they had even been about. But in the moment, she simply couldn’t help herself. He had spoiled her for so long that she had gotten used to having her way. The moment things didn’t go exactly as she wanted, she would sulk. Without even realizing it, her sulking had become a way of acting cute.Being loved and pampered like that felt wonderful—warm and safe. But thinking about how childish she had been last night and again this morning, Aria’s cheeks heated with embarrassment. She felt a twinge of guilt toward Archer. Maybe she really had been a bit too willful lately.…At the Duncan Industries.Archer faced Mark, who stood in front of him seething, his expression openly disrespectful. Archer’s own face remained calm; he had already guessed why Mark was here.“I’m not going to France,” Mark said in a low, cold voice.Archer’s long fi

Looking at Aria’s tear-stained, flushed face as she slept, Archer could only sigh helplessly. He gently wiped away the lingering tears and murmured, “Why are you crying over such a small matter, my dear?”He sat up carefully, making sure not to wake her. Still, he worried that if she lost the warmth she was used to, she might wake up. So he tucked the blanket snugly around her before quietly picking up her phone and slipping out of the room. The next morning, Aria still refused to speak to him. She didn’t even look his way.Archer didn’t try to talk to her either. The two of them moved through breakfast like they were in the middle of a cold war, leaving the housekeeper feeling completely lost and tense under the heavy atmosphere.Especially Aria—her face was icy every time she looked at him.The housekeeper couldn’t help but wonder. The two of them had seemed fine when they came home last night. Did they have a fight in the bedroom? After breakfast, neither said a word, but they

“Then sing me a song to help me fall asleep,” Aria tried a different approach. He let out a quiet laugh, rubbing her back in slow, steady strokes. “Aren’t you a little too old for lullabies?”Aria’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Archer, don’t play dumb.”He patted her back again, resting his chin lightly on the top of her head. “Stop fussing. Go to sleep.”“Archer!” she huffed. It was such a small request, and he still wouldn’t agree. That only made her more annoyed. No matter how many times she called his name, he didn’t answer.Lifting her face from his chest, she found him lying there with his eyes closed, looking for all the world as if he had drifted off.She didn’t believe it for a second. He was faking. It was just one song. Was that so hard?Fine, maybe he didn’t sing for outsiders—but she wasn’t an outsider. She wanted to hear him.It wasn’t just about the song. She was in a romantic mood, and she wanted to know what it would be like to hear him sing a love song to

Aria felt the damp chill of her pajama top clinging to her skin, raising goosebumps along her arms. The cold made her shiver.Archer lifted his head, and she saw that his own face was wet, strands of hair plastered to his forehead, giving him the mischievous look of a boy up to no good. Before, when his face had been pressed against her chest, the coolness hadn’t been too bad. But the moment he moved, a draft slipped in, and she shuddered.“You’re so childish!” Aria twisted and pushed at him, trying to burrow under the covers to warm up.But all that wriggling caught his attention. His gaze dropped, and he noticed the way her pajama top clung to her curves. His eyes darkened. Catching her hands as she reached for the blanket, he pinned them above her head and leaned in, his lips brushing hers. His voice came out low and husky. “Want me to warm you up?”He didn’t give her a chance to answer before his mouth claimed hers.…By the time he finally let her go, Aria was dazed, breat
