*Anna*

I open the glass doors to the reception area, and everyone freezes. Every single person in front of me is staring at me like I have two heads. I stand there for a moment, contemplating what to do, what to say.

Then, the cute blonde lady behind the counter asks in a soft, cautious voice, “Can I help you?”

I take a few hesitant steps forward, not sure how to answer. When I open my mouth, the only thing that comes out is, “I… I’m… Savage.”

Her forehead crinkles. “You’re… Ms. Savage?”

Inhaling deeply, I nod. “That’s right. A. Savage.”

Immediately, her face brightens, and she says, “Welcome, Miss Savage! We’ve been waiting for you. Please, come in. I’m Belinda, the receptionist. I will show you to your office.” She rushes from behind the counter and gestures for me to follow her to my left where a wide hallway leads to a room full of cubicles, bustling people, and more hallways.

As we begin to walk, everyone around us grows silent, moving to catch a glimpse of me. The walkway is lin

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   Welcome to Savage Enterprises

*Anna*The room is full of men in expensive business suits and women wearing clothes that cost more than everything in my closet combined–up until I went shopping over the weekend. I’m standing in front of them, next to Poppy and Belinda. We are in a huge lunch room. Behind the executives is a huge spread of food for lunch, and a giant cake that says, “Welcome, Ms. Savage!” in red cursive letters, the font curly and warm.I don’t feel warm right now. In fact, I feel like I’m about to throw up all over my three thousand dollar Gucci shoes. I’m wearing thick glasses. My hair is pulled up in a bun, and I’m wearing an outfit unlike anything I’ve ever worn in my life, so I don’t think I look like Anna Williams Young, but the moment I saw Cliff Jones in the back of the room, I realized I might be in trouble. When Belinda introduced me as “Ms. Savage,” Cliff tilted his head to the side and narrowed his eyes, like he thought maybe the lighting was off or he’d heard wrong. If he doesn’t know w

*Grant*God, I wish Anna were here. The entire office is buzzing as everyone speculates as to what is going on over at Savage Enterprises. I try to stay tuned into my work and ignore all of it, but when I go to refill my coffee cup around 10:00 A.M., unfortunately, I run into my cousin, Carson, chatting with one of the sales reps, a younger woman with flowing black hair called Gladys who is a bit of a gossipmonger from what I’ve heard. I try to avoid this sort of situation whenever possible, but Carson is in the thick of it as I wait for Gladys to fill her cup and move aside.“Yeah, my buddy called me and said she’s a knockout,” he’s telling her. “Gorgeous. Probably way too hot to actually run a company of that size.”“Are you saying that pretty girls aren’t smart?” Gladys asks, taking a sip of her drink before she notices me and moves aside. I can’t tell if she’s offended or flirting.“Seriously?” Carson asks. “No offense, doll, but girls like you often get by on your looks, not your

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   Let's Ride

*Anna*Monday morning. Bright and early. I am wearing the sort of outfit I would wear to go out of the house and work at a charity event, but in the enormous bag I’m wearing I’ve stashed a power suit I bought at a very fancy store the day before. The woman behind the counter had looked down her nose at me–until I pulled out my card, and she ran it through. Then, she was singing a different tune. I don’t know that I’ll ever get used to being around such snooty people. At least as A. Savage, I will be able to put them in their place.Mother meets me outside. I’ve called for a driver to meet me outside of the gate that surrounds the Young family property and down the street a little way. I can’t chance the family seeing me get in a limo, but I can’t arrive at my first day of work as the CEO of Savage Enterprises in an Uber either. The family assumes I’m taking a bus. Grandmother Trudy has been made aware of my new activities, thanks to Mary, and while she’s not happy about it, Mother say

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   After the Laughter Fades

*Anna*The sofa bed is very uncomfortable tonight. I went to bed a bit earlier than normal because I had a feeling I would be lying awake for hours going over my plan to become the CEO of Savage Enterprises without telling anyone what I’m up to. With Mother’s help, I may be able to pull it off for a while, at least long enough to ensure Grant is in the perfect position to take over Young Corporation and that the members of the family that have humiliated me have paid for their transgressions. That’s not the only reason I can’t sleep, though. I keep wondering where Grant went to. After I visited my mother, I came inside, assuming everyone would be at family dinner. They were, but Hattie left the table for some reason and ran into me in the hallway. She laughed at me and said it must be so humiliating to know that my husband is on a date with another woman.I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to scream in her face, to hit her even. But I would never do anything like that. Instead, I rus

*Grant*The viewing is a somber occasion. Mr. Savage looks regal in his suit inside of a very expensive looking coffin, but seeing dead bodies creeps me out, and I really don’t want to be here.Unfortunately, Grandmother Trudy chose me to represent the family. She called me into her office just before she left work, a little early today, to tell me I needed to be the one to show my face here. I was the only one she trusted to not make the Young family look silly, considering this is our biggest rival. I make my way through the line, shaking the hands of Mr. Savage’s friends. He has no family, none that anyone knows of, anyway, so these people are here to thank us all for coming and allow us to view the body to say our goodbyes before the funeral tomorrow. Grandmother Trudy believes she will be well enough to attend that, thankfully.I shake the hands of three or four people, whispering my condolences, and then reach the end of the line. The older gentleman dressed in a very nice suit

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   The Plan Comes Together

*Anna*“Mom? Mom?” I shake my mother’s shoulders, but she’s not budging. She’s still out cold. I’m not sure if I should be worried, irritated, or laughing. I rush into the kitchen to get some smelling salts and come back to her, slouched in her chair. When I wave them under her nose, she flails, her hand catching me in the cheek and knocking me backward. The blow stings a bit, but I’ve been slapped in the face enough from members of the Young family in the last few years that it doesn’t really faze me.“Oh, Anna!” Mom says, springing back to life. “I’m so sorry. Did I hurt you?”“I’m fine,” I assure her, placing the lid back on the bottle. “Are you okay?”“Yes, yes,” she says, holding one hand to her head. “I guess I… blacked out.” It’s clear she’s still a bit disoriented. “I must have heard you wrong, dear.”I take the smelling salts into the kitchen, get my mother a cup of cool water, and put the kettle on for tea. She’s gonna need something soothing now. “You didn’t hear me wrong,

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   Confronting Sarah

*Anna*My fist hurts from banging it on my mother’s door so hard. I’m pretty sure she’s home now, though. She doesn’t usually attend family dinner in the big house, and it’s almost time for that. Finally, she comes to the door, her eyes wide. “Anna? Are you all right? Why are you banging on the door?”I don’t answer her, nor do I wait to be invited in. I stomp past her, over the mat by the door where we’re supposed to put our shoes. Realizing I’m being rude, I stop and kick my shoes off before rushing into the living room, fishing the letter out of my purse as I go.“Anna?” Mom is obviously flabbergasted and is probably in the same boat with Grant when it comes to assuming I’ve lost my mind. “What in the world? I saw that you borrowed my car, and that’s perfectly fine. But… did you have a wreck or something? Did you hit your head?”“No, Mom.” I sink down on her outdated floral print sofa, the same one that’s sat in her living room since I was a baby. “I did borrow your car–thank you. I

  • Secret Billionaire CEO Daughter-in-Law   That Man Was a Savage

*Anna*The ceiling is swirling above me as I try to understand what I was looking at before I fell backward onto the couch. I didn’t actually black out, but I felt like I might. Something is off. It has to be. There’s absolutely no way that I actually have ten million dollars in my bank account.Maybe Mr. Biglesbee found the wrong person. Anna Williams could be a common name, after all. But… he knew my mother’s name. Well, Sarah is also a common name.I take a few deep breaths and then remember I have the envelope. I’m sure if I open it, everything will be explained. Cautiously, I bring myself up to sitting and draw in some more deep breaths. It’s all going to be fine. Whatever this is, I’ll get it straightened out.I just hope this wasn’t a scam, and the police aren’t looking at me for helping rob someone of ten million dollars!I pull the envelope out of my purse and am just about to open it when the bedroom door opens. Quickly, I shove the envelope back in my bag and grab my phone
