Liam

“Thank you so much.”

That must be the one millionth time I’ve used that phrase tonight. I’ve shook so many hands and forced so many smiles, that the muscles on my cheeks and arms are starting to hurt but damn I love parties. I mean who doesn't? It’s the grand opening of my art gallery. Soft, classical music flows from speakers in the corner and the room is bathed in warm, flickering light.

The room is packed full of guests, dressed to the nines in designer clothes and jewelry with greetings, congratulations and handshakes flying in my direction as I move between the crowd. My eyes settle on one of the more prominent guests standing in a group off to the side. I stop dead in my tracks and smile. She's stunning. Long hair, deep blue dress and flawless makeup, but even without makeup her beauty rivals that of some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in person. My grin only widens when she notices me looking at her and offers an inviting, if slightly awkward wave. I make my wa

“You’re hilarious,” Langston says in a flat voice. “Oh, come on. You thought it was funny, admit it.” “I guess it would be funny if you’re into dad jokes.” “You’re nothing but a big old grump.” I bend down and scoop up a handful of soggy mud and fling it at him. It lands square in the middle of his back. “Oh, no you didn’t!” Langston spins around, bends down to get his own scoop of mud, and I quickly duck to get my own. I’m sensing that I just started World War III. But as I’m reaching down to get more ammo, Langston’s shot hits me right on the crown of my head, mud splattering everywhere. “That was loud.” I lob another shot at him, and this time, I hit him in the shoulder. “You’re asking for it.” And bedlam breaks out, each of us scooping up handfuls of mud and tossing it at the other as quickly as possible. The horses are covered, we’re covered, and the trees around us are covered. Marshmallow backs away from us, not that I blame him, and I allow it. He didn’t ask to be a p

I slow Marshmallow to a stop and climb down to the ground. The mud, still wet from the downpour that lasted most of the night, squishes below my cowgirl boots. The bad thing about these boots is that they have no tread and tend to be slippery. So I walk gingerly over to where the hat is floating around like a boat in the mud puddle. Langston’s steps suck into the mud as he comes up behind me. “You didn’t have to get down,” I say. “I’ve got it covered.” “It’s my fault that I wasn’t watching for the branches better, so I should be the one down in the mud. Not you.” “Langston Keith? Are you actually being nice to me?” I look around. “No one’s even here to witness this.” He trudges through the muck as he catches up beside me. “I can be nice. In fact, most people would say I’m a great guy.” I give him the side eye. “You probably haven’t thrown those people into a lake when it’s forty-seven degrees out.” He throws his head back and laughs. “That was a good day, wasn’t it?” “Maybe on

“What’s the plan then?” “She’s going to meet us at my parents’ home and will be staying with them for a week.” “So long?” “Yeah. She wouldn’t say why though.” I reach out and put a hand on his arm. “I hope everything goes well for you tonight.” He lets out a sigh. “Me too.” “Do you want me to be there?” “It would probably be a good idea if we’re doing this whole … um, relationship thing.” I can tell he was about to say “fake relationship” but stopped himself so no one would overhear. “Of course. We need to show Amanda right off the bat that we’re together and madly in love.” I drop my hand from his arm. “Oh, so now you agree to being in love?” He laughs and shushes me. “Of course.” He lowers his voice and leans toward me. “And keep your voice down. I just saw someone walking around a minute ago. The last thing we need is for someone to overhear what we’re saying.” He’s standing so close to me, near enough that I can see a ring of green around his pupil. His eyes are even mo

JENNII pour myself a cup of peppermint tea and take it to my laptop in my office. It’s getting late, but after Laurie’s remark about Langston and me having a whole slew of babies, I can’t stop thinking about fostering children. I settle into my desk chair and take a sip of tea as I open my browser. I search “How to become a foster parent in Georgia” and click on the top result.I continue to sip my tea as I read through the information, my pulse quickening. Am I really ready to take such a huge step? There’s a form I can fill out to get someone to contact me and discuss the process further. I hold my breath and then go for it. What can it hurt? I can at least get the ball rolling. If I decide later I’m not ready, then I can back out. But I see the faces of the children on the website, and it tugs on my heartstrings. These kids need help, and I can give them a good life. The best of the best. I could take them from hell to heaven. The thought warms me. Or maybe it’s just the tea I jus

Mittens and Zebra, the two gray striped cats that my parents have, chase each other across the living room, tumbling into one of their famous wrestling matches that they’ve been doing since they were kittens. Mittens swipes Zebra across the nose, and Zeb howls in pain.“You two are worse than kids. No respect for Jenni’s piano performance.”When Jenni finishes the song she’s playing, she looks up at me. “Hey, babe.” She gets up and walks up to me, slinging her arms around my shoulders. I try not to stiffen. It’s so strange having her touch me like this, but it’s nice too, which puts me on treacherous ground. I can’t enjoy this too much.“Wes,” my mom calls to my father. “Look at how adorable they are together.” She claps her hands giddily.Dad looks at us from over the book he’s reading in his favorite chair by the fireplace. “I see that.” He sets the book down and uncrosses his legs. “Is dinner ready yet?”“I’ll go check with Lidia.” She heads toward the kitchen.Jenni and I settle o

“And you’re just now telling me this?”Jenni is warm against my side. She feels nice there, like she fits into me. For a moment, it’s almost like the rivalry is gone between us. But who am I kidding? She’s only acting.“I didn’t know we were telling people yet.” I look down at Jenni.“We talked about it, babe.”Babe? Now we’re using pet names? I’m so out of my league here.“So that’s why you took her on such a nice date!” Mom looks like a kid who just got a coveted toy on Christmas morning.I can’t help but feel a little guilty at the look of pure joy in my mom’s eyes.“That’s right,” Jenni says. “I couldn’t help but fall for him after that.” She snuggles into me.She’s good at this. I can barely tell she’s acting, and it’s taking my breath away to have her so close.“Look at the two of you together!” Mom is ecstatic, and guilt creeps up at the web of lies we’re spinning. Jenni and I haven’t really talked through the logistics of how we’re going to end this thing. I don’t like the ide
