“Ethan, I want Bertha and Isaac found and questions.” I was firm in my conviction.

“Grace?” Jolene looked at me.

“I’m okay.” Standing up straight, I took a few deep breaths to collect myself. “What do we do now?” I whispered, more to myself than to her.

“I don’t know.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “We will figure this out together.”

There was some annoyance she felt like I needed coddled like this, but I didn’t want to just push her away, either. Giving her a small smile, I walked over to where we were sitting to see if I could see Vincent’s men.

They were in the distance, still jogging over to the area. We could barely making out their heads as they swivled around, looking for anyone. “What did Vincent whisper to you when he left?” I asked Jolene without looking at her.

“Oh, just to stay with you and make sure you were okay.” She shrugged. “I’m not sure why.”
