Chapter 3

Author: Blaze Ember
To humiliate me, Rosalie started a livestream across all major social platforms.

The headline was jarring—"Tracking Down the Runaway Scammer: The Pathetic Reality of the Langley Family Heir".

The second the stream went live, the viewer count spiked. After all, Rosalie was now a rising tech mogul, while I was the legendary ex-boyfriend who had allegedly run off with her money.

The narrow hallway of the rundown complex was soon packed with neighbors and live-streamers looking for a spectacle.

The old woman living next door, who never missed a chance to take advantage of me, was now spitting into the camera lens just to suck up to Rosalie.

"Oh, that Theodore boy has always been a mess!" she crowed. "He's always bringing sketchy girls back here, and they often cause a ruckus in the middle of the night."

The chat overflowed with comments calling me a "scumbag", a "con artist", and a "piece of trash".

"I feel so bad for Ms. Vaughn. He almost got her killed back then."

"Doesn't he have an older sister? Who knows where she ended up? She probably ditched him ages ago!"

"Honestly, if it wasn't for this jinx, would the Langleys have lost everything? Would his sister have gone missing?"

I couldn't understand a word they were saying. It just felt like thousands of bees were buzzing through my head.

Acting like he owned the place, Sebastian ordered the bodyguards to tear my closet apart.

He fished out a few pairs of tattered underwear, threadbare and yellowed from too many washes. With two fingers, he dangled them in front of the lens, his face twisted in disgust.

"Take a look, everyone. This is what Mr. Langley has been wearing," Sebastian mocked. "Honestly, calling these rags thrift-store leftovers is a compliment. But wait, what are these weird stains on them? Looks like he's been living quite an eventful life, huh?"

He was strongly implying that I was the type to sleep around and might even be working as a gigolo.

Rosalie sat on a high chair like a presiding judge, coldly observing the scene.

"Theodore, spill it. Where did that 500,000 dollars go? You stole the money meant for my life-saving surgery. How do you sleep at night?"

I clutched my head, my memories a tangled, chaotic mess.

Only disjointed, fragmented scenes flashed through my mind—white hospital walls, bright red blood, a signature on a surgical consent form, and a doctor's cold, indifferent expression.

My lips trembled as I tried to defend myself.

"Money…. Gave it to the doctor… To save… Rosalie…"

At those words, Rosalie's expression darkened.

She stormed over, grabbed me by the hair, and forced me to face the camera.

"You gave it to the doctor? Are you trying to tell me you saved my life?" Rosalie growled. "Theodore, there's a limit to your lies! Sebastian was the one who saved me back then. You took the money and ran off with some woman, and now you're trying to steal his credit?"

She was utterly convinced that I was lying to steal someone else's credit, and the disgust in her eyes was impossible to hide.

"I guess you aren't crazy enough yet."

She flicked her wrist. "Wake him up."

A bucket of ice-cold water, the rancid water from just mopping the floor, was thrown directly over my head.

In the dead of late fall, I could feel the chill in my bones.

I was drenched from head to toe, my wet hair plastered against my face, looking like a mess. One of those tattered pairs of underwear landed squarely across my face, obscuring my vision.

Laughter and the clicking of camera shutters erupted all around me.

I shivered and curled into myself like a pathetic animal.

Once upon a time, I was the precious son of the Langley family and the apple of their eyes.

How did I end up like this?

I couldn't understand it, and my head ached terribly.

Three years later, I was running a modest flower shop in a small, sun-drenched coastal town down south. The weather was beautiful, and the ocean breeze carried a crisp, salty tang.Even though I hadn't completely recovered from my illness and still struggled with my memory every now and then, I made sure to water the plants every morning and neatly prune the thorns off the roses. Most importantly, Isabelle was right there beside me, helping me move the heavy planters. The dangerous air that used to radiate off of her was completely gone, replaced by tender affection."Theodore, you doing okay? Go grab a glass of water," she said with a smile, wiping the sweat from her brow.I shook my head and pointed toward the front of the shop. "Isabelle, that strange lady is back again."Right outside our door, under the shade of a sycamore tree, sat a homeless woman. Her hair was prematurely gray and matted, her skin was caked in grime, and she wore a tattered shirt. She came by every sing

Isabelle had kept her eyes glued to Sebastian the entire time. The second he lunged toward me, she moved.Even with all her injuries, her reflexes were lightning-fast. She threw herself in front of me, raised her leg, and delivered a brutal kick straight to Sebastian's abdomen.A thud sounded as Sebastian flew through the air like a rag doll, sailing a good ten feet before crashing heavily into the massive champagne tower.Glasses shattered across the floor, and Sebastian collapsed into the sea of broken glass, wailing in agony. The police swarmed the venue once more. But this time, they were here for Sebastian.Facing charges of grand larceny, aggravated assault, and defamation, he was going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.Rosalie looked as if her strength had failed her as she collapsed onto the ground before me.The high-and-mighty CEO was reduced to a sobbing mess, crying like a toddler who had lost her favorite toy."Theodore, I was wrong! I'm so sorry. Hit me,

The screen instantly mirrored the phone's display, causing every single person to hold their breath. The security prompt read, "Who is my one true love?"In the text field, the typed answer wasn't Rosalie, nor was it Rosie, and it certainly wasn't the name of some wealthy heiress. There was only a single word, searing itself into everyone's eyes."Deceased."The entire room plunged into a suffocating silence. It was so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.As I stared at the answer, the dam inside my mind finally broke, and my tears streamed down my face unchecked. At that moment, my memory fully returned. I remembered everything.I remembered the searing heat of the fire, the agonizing pain of selling my kidney, and the despair of being misunderstood.I rocked on my feet, slowly pushing myself up from the floor, and wiped a smear of blood from my face.I looked directly at Rosalie. My eyes were a terrifying, hollow void, completely drained of any trace of affection."Rosal

Just as my consciousness began to blur and a blood-red haze filled my vision, the screen suddenly went black. The room erupted into a frenzy of murmurs.A moment later, a new video flickered to life.It wasn't the footage of Isabelle being attacked. It was the surveillance footage from a hospital corridor seven years ago.The picture quality was a bit grainy, but it was clear enough to recognize every single face.In the video, I stood in front of a doctor, frantically clutching his white lab coat."Doctor, please, you have to save Rosalie. I don't have any money left, but I can sell a kidney… I'll sign any contract you want. Just save her. You can have my life if that's what it takes."Then, the scene cut to another angle.I was lying in a hospital bed, looking incredibly frail after having just come out of surgery.Sebastian walked into the room. He reached right under my pillow and pulled out a debit card, the one holding every single dollar I had scraped together from sell

My hands trembled violently as I gripped the microphone, though it felt unbearably heavy. The crowd below was a dark, suffocating blur.Countless eyes stared up at me—some full of mockery, some indifferent, and others gleaming with malicious joy.I parted my cracked lips, my voice coming out raw and raspy as I began to recite the script Sebastian had given me the night before."I-I'm Theodore Langley. I'm a shameless scumbag…"Every single word felt like a barbed wire tearing its way out of my throat."Years ago, I stole the money meant for Rosalie's surgery and ran away with someone else…"The crowd erupted into a chorus of boos and jeers.Eager to suck up to Rosalie, someone grabbed food scraps from a nearby table and hurled them at my face."Get off the stage! You make me sick!""Have you no shame?"A piece of fruit rind struck me square on the forehead. The sticky, red juice leaked down my face, and it looked much like blood.Halfway through the speech, a blinding heada

The engagement party was held at the most lavish seven-star hotel in the city, and the blinding glare from the crystal chandeliers made my eyes ache.I was clad in an ill-fitting server's uniform. The sleeves were a bit too short, exposing the dense cluster of needle tracks scoring my forearms. They were the scars left behind from all the times I had to sell my own blood just to scrape by these past few years. The guests were dressed to the nines, glasses of red wine in hand as they mingled. The moment they saw me walk in, a wave of hushed whispers rippled through the crowd."Is that Theodore? God, how did he end up like this?""I heard he went totally nuts. Now, he's working as Ms. Vaughn's personal servant.""Talk about payback. Remember how arrogant he used to be?"Their mockery crashed over me like a tidal wave.Keeping my head down, I held a serving tray and moved mechanically through the crowd.Meanwhile, Sebastian was dressed in a pristine white custom suit worth milli

Rosalie Vaughn looked at me as I rummaged through the trash can, a flash of bewilderment crossing her eyes before it was quickly replaced by utter disgust."Theodore Langley, how long are you going to keep this up?"She kicked the trash can away. The distant wail of sirens grew louder and closer, piercing through the chaotic noise of the complex.Hearing them approach, Isabelle stiffened for a second. She glanced back at me, letting go of the broken neck of the bottle.
