The next day, Monica got dressed to meet Manager Harry. An hour later, the car parked in front of a tall building. Monica placed her hands over her stomach and took deep breaths.

"You have to give in your all, your future depends on this." The manager grasps her palms.

Monica nodded, but a part of her still felt like she was walking into a trap.

"Okay."

"I have talked to my person inside and all you have to do is talk to the CEO to secure the post."

She nodded and attempted to leave the car, but he held her hand again.

"I knew back then you were scared that no decent man would marry you because of what you did but...."

"I knew the truth, but I still went ahead to marry Liam," she muttered, the bitterness almost choking her. "Who would want a girl who dresses provocatively in the pages of magazines as their wife?"

"Monica...."

She hastily shook her head, "It's fine, I'm done with men. I'll try my best inside."

She got out of the car and headed into the building. The interior w

“Stop saying there’s a chance she’s dead. Stop saying that, Leo.” Spencer’s voice broke across the room. Loud. Shaky. Fraying at the edges. He stood in the center of the space like he didn’t know what to do with his hands, his feet, or the weight sitting on his shoulders. His eyes were bloodshot. His shirt was wrinkled and hung unevenly on him. He hadn’t shaved. He hadn’t changed. He hadn’t slept. Not properly. Not since she went missing.Diane flinched when he suddenly turned and drove his fist into the wall. The impact echoed. A small dent formed in the plaster. Blood smeared near the edge where his knuckles split open.Leo took a cautious step forward. “I’m sorry.”“Don’t tell me you’re sorry,” Spencer snapped, still breathing heavily. “I don’t want apologies. I want her found.”Leo didn’t move. “We’ve covered everything. The entire forest perimeter. We found tracks. Footprints. Torn fabric from her shirt. There was a blood trail—but it disappeared near the ridge. It’s possible—”“

Monica shifted against the wall, the rope digging tighter into her wrists. Her breathing was steadier now, but her chest still rose and fell too fast. She’d been alone for hours—or maybe less. There was no clock. No phone. Nothing but the dull flickering of the orange light overhead and the sound of her own heartbeat filling the silence. Then, something broke through. A sound. Distant. Faint. Muffled at first—but it was there. Monica’s head lifted, straining toward the noise. Not footsteps this time. A bang. No, two. The sound of a heavy door slamming open somewhere far above, followed by a man's shout—angry, panicked. She didn’t recognize the voice. Then came another noise. Lower. Closer. A woman. Sharp tone. Commanding. "Search the back room." Monica’s breath caught. That voice. She inched forward, dragging herself toward the middle of the room with her knees scraping the concrete. Her wrists stung, but she didn’t stop. Her cheek brushed the cold floor as she

Spencer didn’t sit. He stood by the counter, both hands flat against the cold marble, staring at the surface like it held answers. Max stayed where he was, a few feet behind him, watching his back. “It was all a lie,” Spencer finally said, his voice even but dull around the edges. Max frowned. “What do you mean?” Spencer glanced over his shoulder. “The adoption. The nephew. The whole thing. None of it was real.” Max took a step forward. “What are you talking about?” Spencer turned to face him. “The man—Alexander Yates. He wasn’t trying to adopt anyone. He wasn’t looking for any long-lost nephew.” “Then why the contest?” Spencer leaned against the counter. “He was writing a book. A research piece, supposedly. Something about human behavior. Greed. Loyalty. How far people will go when there’s money on the table.” Max’s expression didn’t change right away. “You’re telling me the entire company—those people who worked for him—were test subjects?” Spencer nodded. “Witho

Outside the entrance, under a canopy of dim lights, stood a woman in heels far too high for pacing—but she did anyway, her silhouette sharp and commanding against the night. Madam Indiana. Her white coat flared behind her with every turn, and though her lipstick remained perfectly intact, her eyes were wild—red-rimmed, anxious, fierce. The moment the SUV turned the corner, she stopped dead. Her heart slammed once in her chest. The doors hadn’t even fully opened before she was moving—running, not walking, her hand reaching for the handle herself. “Move,” she snapped at the operative who tried to assist, and the man backed off instantly. The door opened. Indiana’s breath caught in her throat. Monica lay crumpled across the back seat, unconscious, her face smudged with dirt, her lip split, blood crusted against her temple. Her clothes were torn. Her leg—bandaged hastily and still bleeding through. “No—no, no, no,” Indiana whispered, kneeling beside the car, brushing Monica’s hai

All she needed was a road. A main road. One with lights, with people, with a damn car—anything that didn’t smell like pine, dirt, and fear.Branches whipped at Monica’s arms as she sprinted through the thick woods, the cold air slicing through her lungs like knives. Her legs ached, her breath came in ragged bursts, and every step sent shockwaves up her thigh where the iron wound throbbed and burned.Then—finally—gravel.Her feet skidded to a halt at the edge of an empty road. She bent double, hands on her knees, gasping. Her hair clung to her sweat-slicked face, and her chest rose and fell like it might give out any second. No headlights. No cars. Not even the hum of a far-off engine.“Where the fuck could they have brought me to?” she muttered, already forcing her legs to move again. Her voice cracked, panic threading through the exhaustion. She wasn’t even sure anymoreHer eyes kept darting behind her. Shadows moved too easily in the woods, and every rustle felt like a footstep.Pai

Max stared at the man standing across the room, arms folded. “Adopted brother?” His voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through the silence. Spencer’s jaw clenched as he nodded once, his eyes not meeting Max’s. He walked toward the table, grabbed his phone from where he had tossed it earlier, and tapped the screen with rough fingers. “I never knew you had an adopted anything,” Max said, moving slowly toward him. “Let alone a brother. And even if you did, what would he want with Monica?” Spencer’s thumb hovered above the phone for a second. He blinked hard. “That bastard would never want to see me happy,” he muttered. “I thought someone had finally given him the death he deserves.” Max frowned. “How do you know it’s him?” Spencer let out a breath, slow and shaky. “Because this is exactly what he would do. He’d wait until I gave a damn about someone, then tear it apart.” Max stepped closer. “I still don’t get it. You said he’s your adopted brother. What does that even mean?” Spe
