Chapter 2

Author: Eirlys
"Why?"

Caleb scoffed, a dark, mocking laugh escaping his throat like he had just heard the funniest joke in the world.

"Freya, you didn't actually think I gave a damn about you, did you? Drop the nauseating wishful thinking. I only grabbed you because I was on my way to get Chloe's custom diamond necklace. You were just in my way."

He bent down, roughly gripping my chin and forcing me to look into his cold, emotionless wolf eyes. "If you died in the banquet hall today, it would have brought bad luck to Chloe's bonding ceremony. A toxic bitch like you doesn't even deserve to ruin her special day with your death."

My heart gave a violent lurch. That final, pathetic flicker of hope completely died right then and there.

So that was it.

It wasn't out of love, or even pity. It was just because my death would be an inconvenience and a stain on his precious Chloe's big day.

"Now, walk your own way back." Caleb dropped his hand in disgust, standing tall and issuing a cold command. "It takes three hours to walk back to the packhouse from here. Perfect. It’ll clear your crazy head so you don't have the energy to ruin Chloe and Victor's wedding night."

With that, he turned around without a shred of hesitation and climbed back into his vehicle.

With the deafening roar of the engine, he sped away, leaving me surrounded by dead silence and absolute darkness.

The pain of my decaying inner wolf raged through my body, feeling like millions of ants gnawing at my bones.

I stared down at my bleeding feet and let out a self-deprecating laugh.

What was the point of everything I had done over the last ten years?

To win over Caleb, I had stayed awake for three days and three nights mapping out battle strategies when he was ambushed by a rival pack. I even used myself as bait to draw the enemies away. When he was poisoned with wolfsbane and hanging by a thread, I used my own mouth to suck the tainted blood out, leaving me bedridden for half a year.

Back then, his affection for me hit ninety-eight percent.

He held my weak body, his eyes red as he swore he would always be the brother who protected me.

But everything changed when Chloe showed up.

All it took was Chloe crying and claiming I hired rogues to attack her.

Caleb instantly withdrew all his warmth.

"Freya, you disgust me." That was the first harsh thing he ever said to me.

From then on, my sacrifices were seen as manipulative, and my sickness was just a cheap trick for attention.

I took a deep breath, forcing my broken body up, and began to slowly drag myself toward town.

With every step, the sharp gravel dug deep into my flesh, but the physical pain was nothing compared to my fading inner wolf.

I was going to die.

If I died, Caleb, Victor, and the others would probably set off fireworks to celebrate.

No one would collect my body. No one would hold a funeral.

I'd probably rot out here in the wild like a stray dog.

No. I couldn't let my ending be that pathetic.

I don't know how long I stumbled, but just before my vision completely blurred, I spotted the dim lights of an all-night funeral home.

I dragged my shattered body inside.

The receptionist behind the counter gasped when she saw me, pale as a ghost and covered in dirt and blood.

"Ma'am... do you need help?"

"I want to... book a funeral. For myself," I said hoarsely, sliding my last remaining savings across the counter. "Seven days from now. Cremation. Just find a quiet, remote plot. Is this enough?"

The receptionist stared at me in shock. After a long silence, she took the card.

"Of course."

Once it was done, the last string holding me together finally snapped.

Endless darkness swallowed me whole, and my body crumpled to the floor.

In my haze, I thought I felt a pair of strong arms scoop me up.

I floated frantically after Rowan.I tried to grab his shirt, I tried to stand in his way, but my hands just passed right through him. When Rowan kicked open the doors to the Silver Moon packhouse, the stench of blood was overwhelming. The scene inside the main hall was grotesque.Chloe, the Omega they had treated like a goddess, was now a broken mess on the floor. Her inner wolf had been entirely destroyed, her beautiful face twisted in agony. And Caleb—my proud Alpha brother—was kneeling beside her, looking completely unhinged. He held a silver blade, neurotically slashing Chloe's skin open again and again."Does it hurt? Chloe, is this how much Freya hurt?" Caleb sobbed, laughing like a maniac. "I'm avenging you, Freya... your brother is getting revenge. You forgive me now, right?"Julian and Victor stood by coldly, looking like they were enjoying the show."What a great show of dogs biting dogs," Rowan's icy voice echoed through the hall. The three men jolted, slowly looking up.Ro

The video on the phone showed security footage from an underground rogue bar.In the video, the sweet, innocent Chloe—who supposedly wouldn't even hurt a fly—was gracefully swirling a glass of wine.Sitting across from her were several vile, stinking rogues.Chloe pushed a heavy briefcase full of cash toward them, a sickening smile on her face. "Make sure you torture Freya well. Remember, no visible scars. Half a million dollars, that's your payment."The scene shifted to a dark, damp basement.I was suspended by chains, covered in blood. The rogues used special whips to lash me over and over again.I screamed and begged, but they only laughed harder. And Chloe? She stood just out of reach in the shadows, smiling as she watched me get tortured like she was admiring a piece of art.Even as a spirit, watching the darkest, most agonizing memory of my life made my soul shudder. The documents Rowan threw were proof of all the times Chloe had bullied and abused me behind their backs.Stack a

Back at the pack, the three men went completely insane when they realized I was gone. They tore the territory apart, searching for three days, until they finally found this desolate graveyard.Caleb was the first to arrive. His normally proud, arrogant Alpha eyes were now bloodshot and terrifying. When he saw the name Freya carved into the stone, it was like a physical blow. He dropped to his knees."No... this is impossible! This is a lie!" Caleb screamed like a madman. His hands dug frantically into the hard earth. His nails cracked and bled into the dirt, but he didn't even flinch. He just kept digging and screaming, "Freya! Come out! You're tricking me again, aren't you?! You liar! Come out!"Julian collapsed right behind him.His legs gave out entirely. He didn't even have the strength to hold himself up, just laying in the mud, letting out a wretched, guttural howl like a wounded animal.Victor stood completely still, looking like his soul had been ripped out of his body.He didn

In the faint moonlight, I recognized his face.It was Rowan. My personal guard, and one of my original targets.Gazing down at me, hooked up to tubes and machines, barely clinging to life, Rowan's eternal ice-king expression completely shattered. His eyes were bloodshot, and his fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were white.I was a bit surprised.I had tried to win him over back in the day, but he was always so resistant, pushing me away like a block of ice I could never melt.I thought he hated me, so I eventually gave up.I never expected him to show up now."Rowan..." Ignoring the pain, I weakly reached out and grabbed the hem of his shirt, clinging to him like a lifeline. "Take me away... please... I don't want to die here."Hearing my plea, Rowan's entire body trembled."Okay. I'll take you away."His voice was hoarse, thick with suppressed tears.Without a second of hesitation, he moved quickly and gently, pulling all the cold IVs and life-support tubes from my body. The

I thought for sure I was dead this time. But instead, I was trapped in an endless darkness. My ears rang with chaotic noises—Caleb's broken sobs, the screech of stretcher wheels rushing down the clinic halls, and Victor and Julian's unhinged shouting."Get out of the way! Let me do it!" Julian's voice trembled like never before. His hands—the steady hands of a surgeon—shook so badly he couldn't even hold the forceps."Damn it! Why won't the bleeding stop?! Why isn't she healing?!" Julian violently threw a tray of bloody gauze to the floor, his eyes bloodshot as he grabbed his assistant by the collar. "Silver poison is strong, but with her werewolf constitution, she shouldn't have zero healing ability! What the hell is going on?!""Healer Julian..." the assistant pointed shakily at the monitor. "Freya... she doesn't have any inner wolf energy left to draw from. Her inner wolf... has completely withered away.""What did you say?!"Victor's massive frame jerked. It was as if all the stren

The room fell into an eerie silence.Victor stared at me, a complex, deep panic flashing in his eyes.He seemed to be searching my face for any sign of a lie, but my eyes held nothing but absolute peace. Now that I knew I was getting a new life, I didn't care about these people anymore."Victor... let's go. My sister looks like she needs rest." Chloe softly tugged at his shirt, her voice sickly sweet.Victor snapped out of it. As if trying to cover up his momentary lapse, he scoffed and let go of me in disgust. "You better behave. Freya, don't let me catch you playing any more tricks."Caleb and Julian stood to the side, looking like they wanted to say something, but I just closed my eyes, pretending to sleep so I wouldn't have to look at them.I didn't want to spend my final days listening to their insults.I remembered when Victor was diagnosed with a rare blood disease and was at death's door.I begged the System to make my blood compatible with his, and then I let them drain half t
