Chapter 1

"Victor, do you take Chloe to be your mate, to protect her for the rest of your life?"

"I do."

Thunderous applause erupted in the banquet hall.

I stood in the darkest corner, watching my childhood sweetheart, the pack's strongest warrior, Victor, gently cup Chloe's face.

Under everyone's witness, they sealed their sacred mate bond and kissed passionately.

My heart felt like it was being ripped apart. It hurt so much I could barely breathe.

Not just because Victor had broken his promise to me, but because the System's cold, robotic voice echoed in my head.

[Ding. The five-year deadline has been reached. Target affection and familial bonds have not reached one hundred percent. Mission failed. Your inner wolf will completely decay, and you will die in seven days.]

Seven days. The final countdown of my life had begun.

Ten years ago, this System bound to me. It told me I had a rare condition called Inner Wolf Decay. The only way to survive was to get complete love or familial affection from one of four targets within a decade.

Those four targets were my brother Caleb, my healer Julian, my childhood friend Victor, and my personal guard Rowan.

I thought it would be easy.

But over the past ten years, every single one of them had grown to despise me.

Victor was my last hope, and now I had utterly failed.

Thinking of my impending death, I turned around, wanting to slip away in a daze.

"Disgusting." The words Victor had spat at me yesterday still rang in my ears. "Freya, why didn't you just die under those rogues' claws?"

I had barely taken a step when the agonizing pain of my decaying inner wolf hit me like a tidal wave.

My vision went black. My legs gave out, and I lost my balance.

I was standing at the top of the spiral stone staircase on the second floor.

Before I could even make a sound, my body pitched forward, plunging toward the hard, jagged steps below.

Just when I thought I was going to be smashed to pieces, a large hand clamped down on my wrist.

The grip was brutal, almost crushing my bones.

I was yanked backward, crashing hard into a cold, muscular chest.

"Are you done throwing a tantrum, Freya?!"

A furious, low growl rumbled from above me.

It was Caleb. My brother, and the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack.

But his eyes held nothing but thick, undiluted disgust and rage.

"If you want to fake a suicide attempt, go do it somewhere else! Do you know what today is? Do you really have to ruin Chloe's bonding ceremony?!"

His words felt like a bucket of ice water, chilling me to the bone.

I looked up at him, my eyes burning.

"I'm not faking it..." My voice trembled. I was so weak that even breathing felt like a chore. "I just... got dizzy. I lost my footing."

"Enough! Drop the sickening act!" Caleb cut me off brutally, his grip unyielding. "Do you think I'm still going to fall for your pity plays?"

He wouldn't even listen. To him, every word out of my mouth was a lie.

Ignoring my struggles, Caleb dragged me by the wrist toward the back parking lot.

I lost one of my shoes in the scuffle. My bare foot scraped against the freezing gravel, sending sharp jolts of pain up my leg.

"Let me go, Caleb... it hurts..." I begged.

He turned a deaf ear, violently shoving me into the passenger seat of his SUV, slamming the door shut, and speeding off.

"Where are you taking me?" I clutched my agonizingly tight chest, cold sweat sticking my hair to my forehead.

Caleb didn't say a word. His jaw was clenched tight, sharp as a knife.

The car tore down the road until it slammed to a halt in a desolate, silent patch of woods on the outskirts of the territory.

There were no streetlights here. Only pale moonlight filtered through the dead leaves, reeking of decay.

Caleb marched around to the passenger side, ripped the door open, and hauled me out.

I crashed hard onto the dirt. Sharp rocks sliced my knees, and blood instantly stained my dress.

"Since you want to die so badly, just die out here. Don't come back and be an eyesore," Caleb glared down at me, his voice icy. "Stop playing these pathetic suicide games, and don't even think about interrupting Chloe and Victor's ceremony."

The night wind howled, the chill biting into my bones.

I sat slumped on the freezing ground, staring at the brother who shared my blood.

"Caleb..." I rasped, my voice sounding incredibly desolate in the empty woods. "If you really hate me that much, if you think I'm such a disgrace... why did you catch me earlier?"

Why didn't he just let me fall?

Did he, deep down, still care about me as his sister, even just a little bit?

I gazed up at him, clinging to the very last sliver of hope.

I floated frantically after Rowan.I tried to grab his shirt, I tried to stand in his way, but my hands just passed right through him. When Rowan kicked open the doors to the Silver Moon packhouse, the stench of blood was overwhelming. The scene inside the main hall was grotesque.Chloe, the Omega they had treated like a goddess, was now a broken mess on the floor. Her inner wolf had been entirely destroyed, her beautiful face twisted in agony. And Caleb—my proud Alpha brother—was kneeling beside her, looking completely unhinged. He held a silver blade, neurotically slashing Chloe's skin open again and again."Does it hurt? Chloe, is this how much Freya hurt?" Caleb sobbed, laughing like a maniac. "I'm avenging you, Freya... your brother is getting revenge. You forgive me now, right?"Julian and Victor stood by coldly, looking like they were enjoying the show."What a great show of dogs biting dogs," Rowan's icy voice echoed through the hall. The three men jolted, slowly looking up.Ro

The video on the phone showed security footage from an underground rogue bar.In the video, the sweet, innocent Chloe—who supposedly wouldn't even hurt a fly—was gracefully swirling a glass of wine.Sitting across from her were several vile, stinking rogues.Chloe pushed a heavy briefcase full of cash toward them, a sickening smile on her face. "Make sure you torture Freya well. Remember, no visible scars. Half a million dollars, that's your payment."The scene shifted to a dark, damp basement.I was suspended by chains, covered in blood. The rogues used special whips to lash me over and over again.I screamed and begged, but they only laughed harder. And Chloe? She stood just out of reach in the shadows, smiling as she watched me get tortured like she was admiring a piece of art.Even as a spirit, watching the darkest, most agonizing memory of my life made my soul shudder. The documents Rowan threw were proof of all the times Chloe had bullied and abused me behind their backs.Stack a

Back at the pack, the three men went completely insane when they realized I was gone. They tore the territory apart, searching for three days, until they finally found this desolate graveyard.Caleb was the first to arrive. His normally proud, arrogant Alpha eyes were now bloodshot and terrifying. When he saw the name Freya carved into the stone, it was like a physical blow. He dropped to his knees."No... this is impossible! This is a lie!" Caleb screamed like a madman. His hands dug frantically into the hard earth. His nails cracked and bled into the dirt, but he didn't even flinch. He just kept digging and screaming, "Freya! Come out! You're tricking me again, aren't you?! You liar! Come out!"Julian collapsed right behind him.His legs gave out entirely. He didn't even have the strength to hold himself up, just laying in the mud, letting out a wretched, guttural howl like a wounded animal.Victor stood completely still, looking like his soul had been ripped out of his body.He didn

In the faint moonlight, I recognized his face.It was Rowan. My personal guard, and one of my original targets.Gazing down at me, hooked up to tubes and machines, barely clinging to life, Rowan's eternal ice-king expression completely shattered. His eyes were bloodshot, and his fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were white.I was a bit surprised.I had tried to win him over back in the day, but he was always so resistant, pushing me away like a block of ice I could never melt.I thought he hated me, so I eventually gave up.I never expected him to show up now."Rowan..." Ignoring the pain, I weakly reached out and grabbed the hem of his shirt, clinging to him like a lifeline. "Take me away... please... I don't want to die here."Hearing my plea, Rowan's entire body trembled."Okay. I'll take you away."His voice was hoarse, thick with suppressed tears.Without a second of hesitation, he moved quickly and gently, pulling all the cold IVs and life-support tubes from my body. The

I thought for sure I was dead this time. But instead, I was trapped in an endless darkness. My ears rang with chaotic noises—Caleb's broken sobs, the screech of stretcher wheels rushing down the clinic halls, and Victor and Julian's unhinged shouting."Get out of the way! Let me do it!" Julian's voice trembled like never before. His hands—the steady hands of a surgeon—shook so badly he couldn't even hold the forceps."Damn it! Why won't the bleeding stop?! Why isn't she healing?!" Julian violently threw a tray of bloody gauze to the floor, his eyes bloodshot as he grabbed his assistant by the collar. "Silver poison is strong, but with her werewolf constitution, she shouldn't have zero healing ability! What the hell is going on?!""Healer Julian..." the assistant pointed shakily at the monitor. "Freya... she doesn't have any inner wolf energy left to draw from. Her inner wolf... has completely withered away.""What did you say?!"Victor's massive frame jerked. It was as if all the stren

The room fell into an eerie silence.Victor stared at me, a complex, deep panic flashing in his eyes.He seemed to be searching my face for any sign of a lie, but my eyes held nothing but absolute peace. Now that I knew I was getting a new life, I didn't care about these people anymore."Victor... let's go. My sister looks like she needs rest." Chloe softly tugged at his shirt, her voice sickly sweet.Victor snapped out of it. As if trying to cover up his momentary lapse, he scoffed and let go of me in disgust. "You better behave. Freya, don't let me catch you playing any more tricks."Caleb and Julian stood to the side, looking like they wanted to say something, but I just closed my eyes, pretending to sleep so I wouldn't have to look at them.I didn't want to spend my final days listening to their insults.I remembered when Victor was diagnosed with a rare blood disease and was at death's door.I begged the System to make my blood compatible with his, and then I let them drain half t
