Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
I didn't argue with Soren anymore. I figured he'd come just to vent his anger.

After he slammed the door, a final, deafening punctuation to his rage, the silence in the apartment felt heavier than before.

I used to be terrified of facing his hatred. Now, I almost missed it.

At least I got to see him one last time…

I thought he was gone for good.

But the next morning at six, my doorbell rang.

I dragged myself to the door, every muscle screaming in protest.

Soren was standing there with coffee and croissants.

"Breakfast," he shoved the bag into my hands. "Even the dying need energy, right?"

I stared at him. "What are you doing?"

"Since you're so determined to die," his smile was icy, "I'll help you. Today, we pick out your Spirit Stone."

A Spirit Stone. A sacred stone used to house the spiritual energy of a powerful wolf after death. Only wolves on the verge of death needed one.

"Now?"

"Now." He grabbed my wrist. "Get dressed. We're going."

An hour later, we were at the Guardian Peaks Sanctuary.

Ancient stone pillars reached for the sky, each one carved with runes of the Moon Goddess.

This was the most sacred place for North American wolves.

Rogues weren't even allowed to set foot on the sacred grounds.

"Elder!" Soren's voice echoed through the valley. "I've brought a guest!"

An old, white-haired wolf emerged from a stone temple. His eyes landed on me, and his expression grew complicated.

"Daisy of the Silver Moon pack," he said softly. "What are you doing here?"

"We're here to pick a Spirit Stone for her," Soren announced, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "A stone for the betrayer! For the she-wolf who broke her bond!"

The other wolves in the sanctuary turned to stare. A tide of whispers washed over us.

"A betrayer..."

"She dares to come to the sanctuary?"

"The Moon Goddess will never forgive her..."

I kept my face calm.

"Elder," I bowed deeply. "Please forgive my intrusion."

The old wolf looked at me with pity in his eyes.

"Child, you..." he paused. "The moon-glow in you... it truly is fading."

Soren's expression froze.

"Impossible," he muttered.

"Take her to choose a stone," the elder sighed. "The Moon Goddess forgives all lost souls."

We walked into the deep stone caves where countless Spirit Stones were kept. Each one pulsed with a soft light, waiting for its master.

"How about this one?" Soren grabbed the smallest, dullest stone. "It suits your current station."

"It's perfect," I nodded.

He stared, clearly thrown off by my compliance.

"And these," his voice grew more vicious. "A Soul Shroud, a Spirit Totem, an Eternal Portrait. If you're going to put on a show, might as well go all out!"

"Fine."

"You..." he glared at me. "What the hell is your game?"

"I'm preparing to die," I said calmly. "Aren't you playing along?"

His face twisted as if I'd slapped him.

"Let's go." He turned and stalked out. "We'll get these custom-made."

That afternoon, we went to the most famous funerary shop in the territory.

"An Eternal Portrait?" The owner was a wiry wolf. "And your relation to her is...?"

"She's my..." Soren paused. "Ex-mate."

"Ex-mate?" The owner frowned. "Then why are you commissioning her portrait?"

"Because she's dying," Soren's voice was flat. "Moon's Glow Fading."

The owner's face changed.

"That's a job for a pack shaman. Does she not have a pack?" He looked at me with disgust. "Sorry. We don't serve rogues."

The air grew heavy.

Soren's Alpha power exploded, shaking the entire shop.

"How much?" He pulled out a black credit card. "I asked you, how much?"

The owner could barely breathe under the pressure. "Three... three hundred thousand..."

"Triple the price," Soren tossed the card on the counter. "Are you going to paint it or not?"

Three days later, I was back in my apartment. My last stop.I sat on the sofa, feeling the last flicker of my life fade.Soren sat across from me, watching me.He wasn't frantic anymore. The desperation was gone. Replaced by a terrifying calm."Are you okay?" I asked."I'm great," he smiled. "Never been better."His calm was unsettling. The doorbell rang.Neither of us moved. It rang for five solid minutes. Then, pounding."Open up! I know you're in there!"A shrill, female voice."My mother," I whispered, my blood running cold."I'll get it." He stood, his expression serene. When the door opened, a perfectly manicured woman walked in. She wore an expensive suit and was draped in jewels."My dearest daughter!" she cried, opening her arms dramatically. "Mommy's come to see you!"I didn't move."Please, have a seat," Soren said politely."Coffee will be fine." She sat on the sofa, her eyes scanning my humble apartment with disdain. "Heavens, Daisy, how can you live in this place?"I sai

BAM!The door flew open. Julian stood there, his Alpha aura a physical force in the room."Enough," his voice was thunder. "Get away from her."Soren spun around, a feral glint in his eyes."Get out!" he growled. "You're not welcome here!""Look what you've done to her!" Julian pointed at my pale face. "She needs rest. Not your madness."Their auras clashed. The air turned to glass, vibrating, about to shatter. The medical monitors shrieked."I did this?" Soren let out a harsh laugh. "She's the one who betrayed me! She trampled on our bond at the sacred altar!""That was seven years ago!""Seven years?" Soren's eyes glowed a dangerous gold. "Do you have any idea what seven years of that pain is like? Do you understand that torment?"Julian took a step forward, his own silver-grey eyes blazing."Of course I do! Because I love her, too!"The air froze.Soren's face twisted into a snarl."You love her?" His voice dropped, low and dangerous. "Then why did you destroy her pack?"Julian fro

"I'm going to find the Moon Witch!"Soren lunged for the door. Again. His shoulder slammed into the frame. He staggered back, sliding down the wall."Damn it!" He punched the wall. "Damn it, damn it!"I watched him. This once-mighty Alpha, now a feral animal that had lost all control."Soren, come back.""No!" He glared at me, his eyes shot with blood. "I'm going to the Forbidden Lands! I'm going to find the Fountain of Life! I'll find it if it kills me!"He charged for the door again, crashing head-on into the frame.CRACK!The impact shook the room. He slid to the floor and buried his head in his hands.A guttural howl tore from his throat. The sound an Alpha makes only in absolute despair, a soul being ripped in two."Aaargh—"Low, agonizing, hopeless. The sound hit my heart like a sledgehammer. He fell to his knees, slamming his fists into the floor.Thump! Thump! Thump!Blood seeped from his knuckles, staining the white tiles red."Why?" He looked up, tears tracking paths throug

I nodded. He finally believed it."No. No. This isn't happening." He shot to his feet, pacing like a caged wolf. "There's a cure for Lunar Fade. There has to be.""Soren—""Don't say that!" he whirled on me, his eyes wild. "I won't let you die. Do you hear me? I forbid it."He rushed to the window, pulling out his phone and frantically dialing."Hello? I need the Moon Witch! What do you mean she's in the Alaskan Forbidden Lands? I'll pay anything!"I watched him in silence."And the Fountain of Life!" he roared into the phone. "Where is it? What do you mean it's a myth? Screw the myths! Find me the real thing!"He hung up and dialed again."The Moon Priests? Ancient healing rituals? Can you cure Lunar Fade?"One call after another. Every one a failure."It's impossible, sir...""There are no successful cases...""It is the Goddess's punishment. It cannot be reversed...""Useless!" Soren hurled his phone at the wall. It shattered. "All of them. Useless!"He turned to me, tears welling i

After the festival, Soren disappeared. No goodbye. Nothing. He just vanished.Three months later, Julian and I had our engagement ceremony."I'm sorry," I told him that night, standing on the balcony.Julian leaned against the railing, his silver-grey eyes fixed on the distant mountains."What for?" His voice was calm. "You held up your end of the bargain.""But we both know this isn't about love."He turned to me, a complicated emotion in his eyes."Daisy, do you know why I agreed to this?"I shook my head."Because I love you. I have since the first time I saw you at the academy." He gave a bitter smile. "Even knowing your heart belonged to someone else, I was willing to wait."My heart sank."Julian...""Don't." He reached out, gently stroking my cheek. "I know you can't love me now. But maybe one day, you'll forget him."If only. Some wounds only get deeper with time.Six months later, everything changed. My father burst into the living room, his face ghost-white."We're ruined," h

After training, Soren found me."Thanks." He handed my jacket back. "But you shouldn't have helped me.""Why not?""Because it's going to cause you trouble," he said softly. "Marcus won't let this go."I laughed."I'm the heir to the Silvermoon Pack. He wouldn't dare touch me."Soren shook his head."You don't get it. The powerful don't challenge you head-on. They strike from the shadows." A flash of pain crossed his eyes. "I've seen it happen too many times."Suddenly, I wanted to know everything about him."Tell me your story," I said.He froze."What?""Tell me your story, Soren." I sat on the training field steps. "No one's around to hear."He hesitated for a long time, then sat down next to me."I'm from a small pack in the Barren Mountains. My father was a Beta. My mother died when I was seven." His voice was steady, but I could feel the pain he was hiding. "We were poor. So poor we couldn't afford basic combat training.""Then how did you get here?""I beat every opponent across
