Chapter 2

Author: Mango Seed
A dull ache started throbbing in my chest.

Hugo always loved to rest his head against my belly and take a deep breath, telling me I had a sweet, milky scent, like a baby. He'd even bring out storybooks every night and insist on reading them with me for our baby's prenatal education.

The further I scrolled, the more vile the posts became.

My fingers trembled so badly that I could barely hold my phone.

"You can curse me all you want, but my girlfriend's innocent," the original poster said. "She's sweet and kindhearted. She's even agreed to break things off with me once the baby is born. She promised she wouldn't cling to me or cause trouble."

The post also included a video.

A young woman with her hair tied in a high ponytail sat in a cozy restaurant, twirling pasta around her fork with a smile that revealed a pair of faint dimples.

Back when I'd just started working, I'd once been treated unfairly and come home in tears.

Without a second thought, Hugo skipped an important meeting and drove three hours just to take me to the restaurant I'd been talking about for ages.

Sitting across from me, he'd carefully sliced the steak into bite-size pieces, his eyes bright with affection.

"Selena," he began, looking at me sincerely. "I'll always work hard to make you smile every single day for the rest of your life."

Tears plopped onto my phone screen.

I couldn't believe my eyes. How could it be Hugo?

I kept pondering the same question over and over, refusing to accept the truth.

How could it be the man who'd never given up on me—not through high school, not through college, and not even during the three years we worked in different cities?

The irony wasn't lost on me when I spotted the bracelet on the woman's wrist. I'd given it to her myself.

Regina Shaw was the real estate agent who'd helped Hugo and me buy our marital home.

Back then, work kept me so busy that I could only squeeze in house viewings whenever I had a spare moment. Whether it was late at night after overtime or early on a weekend morning, she would almost always reply the moment I messaged her.

No matter how many properties we viewed, she never once showed the slightest impatience.

Regina reminded me of the woman I'd once been, struggling and working tirelessly to carve out a place for myself in this big, bustling city.

Whenever a viewing ran late, I always insisted that Hugo and I drive her home.

The roads in her neighborhood were so narrow that cars couldn't get through. Every time she got out, she wore the same awkward, dejected expression. The headlights cast her frail shadow across the road, making her look all the more pitiful.

It turned out I wasn't the only one who felt sorry for her.

In the video, Regina picked up a few slices of lamb and placed them on Hugo's plate, gazing at him with open admiration.

"Hugo, you're seriously amazing! You're only 28, and you've already saved enough for a down payment of over 400 thousand dollars all on your own. You're so thoughtful toward your wife, too. Why do all the good men get married so young?"

Then she changed the subject, giggling.

"No wonder Selena was in such a hurry to have a baby. Was she afraid she couldn't keep you otherwise?"

Hugo gently tapped her forehead.

"With all this delicious food in front of you, how do you still find so much to say?"

Regina shot him a playful, reproachful look.

"Married women really do have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves. I guess my little schemes can't compete with hers."

Hugo fell silent, turning the wedding ring on his finger.

"Well, she's already pregnant," he finally murmured after a long pause. "It's not like I can tell her I don't want the baby, so I just have to go along with it."

Seeing that I remained unmoved, Hugo eventually lost it. "Divorce? Where do you think you'll go once we're divorced?" he snapped, his face contorting with anger. "You fell out with your family when we got married. Who's going to help you raise this baby once it's born? Can you even afford to support a child? "You have a perfectly good life, yet you insist on making yourself suffer by getting a divorce. You really don't know when to quit. Do you honestly think I can't live without you?"I stared at him.So this was how it ended for us—we became enemies. No matter how deeply two people had once loved each other, divorce seemed to bring out the worst in them."Hugo, do you know the biggest difference between my parents' love and yours?"My parents genuinely want what's best for their daughter. They're willing to burn bridges, even if it means having her hate them, just to stop her from walking into a living hell."But your love is like candy laced with poison. Once you swallow it

"Selena, dear, our family has never mistreated you since you married Hugo," Pauline said. "He merely made the same mistake any man might make. Why do you have to humiliate him like this? If you let things get this ugly, how are the two of you supposed to live together from now on?""Are all the other men in the world dead?" I snapped, shaking off her hand. "Why should I cling to an asshole like Hugo?"Regina hurried over to support Pauline, whose face was twisted with rage. "Pauline, don't get so worked up. This woman isn't worth ruining your health over," she said before turning to me. "Selena, if you ask me, you should reflect on yourself first. If a woman can't keep her man, it's because she's not capable enough."A slap filled the air. "How dare you hit me!" Regina cried, clutching her cheek. "You—""So what if I hit you? Do you expect me to ask permission first?"I rolled up my sleeves, grabbed her by the hair, and slapped her repeatedly across the face.Regina's careful

I smiled and said nothing.Just then, Hugo and Regina walked in at the same time, their shoulders brushing against each other as they chatted and laughed. "Selena, Hugo insisted on picking me up when he found out you'd invited me. I hope you're not upset."She might've sounded apologetic, but her smug gaze roaming over me said otherwise. When it was time to take our seats, she deliberately squeezed past Pauline under the guise of an innocent accident and plopped herself down beside Hugo. Everyone exchanged bewildered glances, unsure what to make of her brazen behavior.Even Hugo looked uncomfortable. But since I, his lawful wife, hadn't said anything, the others laughed awkwardly and let it slide.Only Carl looked worried.I gave him a reassuring glance, then rose with my glass in hand."I'm pregnant, so I can't drink alcohol. I hope you won't mind if I raise a glass of juice instead."First, I'd like to thank Regina, who's like a sister to me. Thanks to all her running aro

Hugo pecked Regina's lips, ruffled her hair, and tried to appease her."At first, I was worried she might've done it on purpose today," he said. "But knowing her personality, if she'd found out I was seeing someone else, she would've given me hell by now. There's no way she'd act like nothing was wrong and happily have dinner with me.""That's true," Regina muttered under her breath. "A wife who genuinely loves her husband would never be able to swallow something like that. It must've been a coincidence."Hugo frowned, and for a moment, he looked unsettled. But as Regina's soft hands roamed over his body, his expression relaxed. He swept her into his arms and carried her into the hotel. After all, I was still carrying his child. Perhaps he thought that meant I wouldn't turn his life upside down. I watched them leave, my expression impassive. Once I finished recording the video, I sent it to my lawyer. Then I turned the car around and went home to sleep. If I went through wit

I remained silent for a long time. Eventually, I braced myself against the chair and got to my feet. Before leaving, I begged Dr. Fitzroy not to tell Hugo that I'd asked about terminating the pregnancy. There was still so much I needed to do. On the way home, I compiled all the screenshots of Hugo's post into a file. My lawyer had told me that as long as we could verify the account belonged to Hugo through his real-name information, the evidence of his infidelity could entitle me to at least 65% of the marital assets in the divorce. Any videos clearly showing his face would make my case even stronger. The properties Hugo had put in my name would also need to be reviewed to establish which assets I could keep.As for the baby, a high-end private hospital would find a way to terminate the pregnancy as long as I was willing to pay. I wasn't a saint. I couldn't spend the rest of my life raising the child of a man who'd betrayed me, pretending to be happy and harboring no regrets

"Selena!" Dr. Fitzroy, my obstetrician, greeted me warmly. "Why are you here alone today? Where's Hugo? He's always been so concerned about you and the baby. Now that you're so far along, I hardly expected him to stop showing up!"It was true that Hugo hadn't missed a single prenatal appointment since we found out I was pregnant.Every time we came in, he'd bring Dr. Fitzroy a basket of fruit or order her an elaborate takeaway meal from an upscale restaurant. He said hospitals were stressful places, and that if the doctors were in a good mood, they'd be more likely to treat me gently, too. Over time, Dr. Fitzroy had grown quite close to us. She'd even secretly let me know that I was carrying a girl I'd been dreaming of for so long.Leaning back in my chair, I closed my eyes."Dr. Fitzroy, I'm not here for a prenatal checkup," I finally said, my voice heavy with emotion. "I'm here to ask about terminating my pregnancy.""What did you say?"Dr. Fitzroy exclaimed so loudly that se
