Chapter 5

Author: Mango Seed
"Oh, right. I just remembered Mr. Clinton has piled a ton of work on me," Hugo added. "He'd definitely have a problem with me taking time off at the last minute."

He paused.

"Or we could go to Grandview Park," he suggested. "I know how much you fancy those spacious apartments with ocean views."

"Last night, you said you'd do anything I asked," I cut him off, a mocking smile tugging at my lips. "Hugo, you're not keeping a mistress at Northdale Heights, are you? I'm just going to look at houses, not interrogate you. Why are you so nervous?"

Realizing he'd let his anxiety show, Hugo gave an awkward laugh and could only keep driving in silence. He kept looking for opportunities to text on his phone throughout the entire drive.

His anxiety was impossible to miss.

When we arrived, I pulled him straight into the sales office.

Regina was arranging the architectural models when she looked up. Her gaze lingered on Hugo for a moment, and a blush crept across her cheeks.

Hugo, however, was so tense that even the muscles in his forearms turned rock-solid. His eyes met hers for an instant before he jerked his gaze away, as though he'd been burned.

He tried to head left, but I deliberately tugged him to the right, straight toward Regina.

"What a coincidence!" I exclaimed. "Regina works here, too… Do you remember her? She was the agent who helped us buy our marital home."

All the color drained from Hugo's face. He stood rooted to the spot, as though he'd been frozen in place.

I slipped my arm through his and feigned confusion.

"Do you really not remember her?"

"No!" Hugo snapped back to his senses, his voice shooting up an octave. "I don't remember her. We've dealt with so many agents… Besides, I was focused on looking at houses. Who pays attention to what the agents look like?"

Regina's expression fell. Her fingers tightened around the brochure she was holding.

"Regina, you look so pale," I said, feigning concern as I glanced at the rows of architectural models. "Has work been wearing you out?

"It's really hard for a woman to make it on her own. It's a good thing Hugo's doing so well. After buying our marital home, he's now planning to buy another place for our baby and put it in my name. Honestly, what am I supposed to do with so many properties?

"Oh, by the way, you're always up at dawn and working late to meet clients. Can you even afford a place here on your salary?"

Regina's eyes instantly reddened.

"I could never be as lucky as you, Selena," she ground out. "I make just enough to get by."

As we continued viewing the properties, Regina's expression grew increasingly strained.

Hugo didn't even dare to look up, terrified that his eyes might meet hers.

I stopped in front of Unit 1604.

"This one, then. I really like the number. Your birthday is April sixteenth, isn't it, Regina?"

Regina didn't answer, resentment plain in her eyes. Hugo's lips parted slightly, as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he remained silent.

Tension hung thick in the air, wrapping around the three of us like an invisible web.

I watched with interest as the tension between them mounted, until both Hugo and Regina were breathing more heavily.

Finally, Hugo broke the silence, surrendering to the inevitable.

"Fine," he relented. "We'll take this one."

Regina stared at him in disbelief, her voice trembling on the verge of tears.

"But you promised me…"

As though she'd suffered some terrible injustice, she could no longer contain herself. She spun around and hurried away.

I smirked. Was that all it took to break her? I'd barely even gotten started.

Seeing that I remained unmoved, Hugo eventually lost it. "Divorce? Where do you think you'll go once we're divorced?" he snapped, his face contorting with anger. "You fell out with your family when we got married. Who's going to help you raise this baby once it's born? Can you even afford to support a child? "You have a perfectly good life, yet you insist on making yourself suffer by getting a divorce. You really don't know when to quit. Do you honestly think I can't live without you?"I stared at him.So this was how it ended for us—we became enemies. No matter how deeply two people had once loved each other, divorce seemed to bring out the worst in them."Hugo, do you know the biggest difference between my parents' love and yours?"My parents genuinely want what's best for their daughter. They're willing to burn bridges, even if it means having her hate them, just to stop her from walking into a living hell."But your love is like candy laced with poison. Once you swallow it

"Selena, dear, our family has never mistreated you since you married Hugo," Pauline said. "He merely made the same mistake any man might make. Why do you have to humiliate him like this? If you let things get this ugly, how are the two of you supposed to live together from now on?""Are all the other men in the world dead?" I snapped, shaking off her hand. "Why should I cling to an asshole like Hugo?"Regina hurried over to support Pauline, whose face was twisted with rage. "Pauline, don't get so worked up. This woman isn't worth ruining your health over," she said before turning to me. "Selena, if you ask me, you should reflect on yourself first. If a woman can't keep her man, it's because she's not capable enough."A slap filled the air. "How dare you hit me!" Regina cried, clutching her cheek. "You—""So what if I hit you? Do you expect me to ask permission first?"I rolled up my sleeves, grabbed her by the hair, and slapped her repeatedly across the face.Regina's careful

I smiled and said nothing.Just then, Hugo and Regina walked in at the same time, their shoulders brushing against each other as they chatted and laughed. "Selena, Hugo insisted on picking me up when he found out you'd invited me. I hope you're not upset."She might've sounded apologetic, but her smug gaze roaming over me said otherwise. When it was time to take our seats, she deliberately squeezed past Pauline under the guise of an innocent accident and plopped herself down beside Hugo. Everyone exchanged bewildered glances, unsure what to make of her brazen behavior.Even Hugo looked uncomfortable. But since I, his lawful wife, hadn't said anything, the others laughed awkwardly and let it slide.Only Carl looked worried.I gave him a reassuring glance, then rose with my glass in hand."I'm pregnant, so I can't drink alcohol. I hope you won't mind if I raise a glass of juice instead."First, I'd like to thank Regina, who's like a sister to me. Thanks to all her running aro

Hugo pecked Regina's lips, ruffled her hair, and tried to appease her."At first, I was worried she might've done it on purpose today," he said. "But knowing her personality, if she'd found out I was seeing someone else, she would've given me hell by now. There's no way she'd act like nothing was wrong and happily have dinner with me.""That's true," Regina muttered under her breath. "A wife who genuinely loves her husband would never be able to swallow something like that. It must've been a coincidence."Hugo frowned, and for a moment, he looked unsettled. But as Regina's soft hands roamed over his body, his expression relaxed. He swept her into his arms and carried her into the hotel. After all, I was still carrying his child. Perhaps he thought that meant I wouldn't turn his life upside down. I watched them leave, my expression impassive. Once I finished recording the video, I sent it to my lawyer. Then I turned the car around and went home to sleep. If I went through wit

I remained silent for a long time. Eventually, I braced myself against the chair and got to my feet. Before leaving, I begged Dr. Fitzroy not to tell Hugo that I'd asked about terminating the pregnancy. There was still so much I needed to do. On the way home, I compiled all the screenshots of Hugo's post into a file. My lawyer had told me that as long as we could verify the account belonged to Hugo through his real-name information, the evidence of his infidelity could entitle me to at least 65% of the marital assets in the divorce. Any videos clearly showing his face would make my case even stronger. The properties Hugo had put in my name would also need to be reviewed to establish which assets I could keep.As for the baby, a high-end private hospital would find a way to terminate the pregnancy as long as I was willing to pay. I wasn't a saint. I couldn't spend the rest of my life raising the child of a man who'd betrayed me, pretending to be happy and harboring no regrets

"Selena!" Dr. Fitzroy, my obstetrician, greeted me warmly. "Why are you here alone today? Where's Hugo? He's always been so concerned about you and the baby. Now that you're so far along, I hardly expected him to stop showing up!"It was true that Hugo hadn't missed a single prenatal appointment since we found out I was pregnant.Every time we came in, he'd bring Dr. Fitzroy a basket of fruit or order her an elaborate takeaway meal from an upscale restaurant. He said hospitals were stressful places, and that if the doctors were in a good mood, they'd be more likely to treat me gently, too. Over time, Dr. Fitzroy had grown quite close to us. She'd even secretly let me know that I was carrying a girl I'd been dreaming of for so long.Leaning back in my chair, I closed my eyes."Dr. Fitzroy, I'm not here for a prenatal checkup," I finally said, my voice heavy with emotion. "I'm here to ask about terminating my pregnancy.""What did you say?"Dr. Fitzroy exclaimed so loudly that se
