Face Slapping
After I was taken into the mountains, I became the whole town's slave. If one field remained unharvested or one family's firewood went uncut, they beat my face bloody. They avoided my arms and legs only because they expected twice as much work from me the next day. On New Year's Eve, I finally decided I couldn't survive another day and went to the river to end my life, only to hear two people whispering behind the trees. "Watch yourself. He is still the Hawthornes' biological son. They sent him to Red Willow Hollow to learn discipline, not for you to use however you want." "Biological son? His parents haven't asked about him in years. They already have another boy, the polished young heir who visited last time. The difference between them is night and day. "If anything happens, we'll blame him. Mrs. Hawthorne said that a boy without manners doesn't deserve to be her son. He may as well die out here." I stood frozen above the river, forgetting even why I had come. My mother always boasted that her family came from old money. She said a gentleman's most important quality was proper conduct. So why, after seeing my body, did she abandon every rule of dignity she had ever demanded from me?

Seven Years of Obedience Chapter 8
"Have you forgotten how impossible Caleb used to be? Even you couldn't control him. Mara had no choice except to become strict. And you know how easily Caleb lied. How can you be certain he didn't carve those stories to frame her?"His voice cracked with hurt. "If you insist on punishing her, then I should leave the Hawthorne family too. I don't want you to suffer every time you look at me."My parents remained frozen for several seconds before the sickle and hatchet fell from their hands. My chest filled with a thousand small needles.Of course. My parents would never choose me."You should leave."A cold voice came from outside. "But you aren't leaving by yourself. We're taking you."Several uniformed officers entered the yard.Elliot's face went white. "What is this? What did I do?"Detective Salazar handed my parents a file. "We believed the circumstances of this death were suspicious, so the Everden Bureau of Investigation continued working the case. Read the findings you
Seven Years of Obedience Chapter 7
They dreamed of me as a small child clutching their clothes and crying, "Mom, Dad, it hurts. It hurts so much."Both of them jerked awake. My mother covered her face and sobbed until her body shook. After a long silence, my parents stood, took nothing with them, and drove through the night to Red Willow Hollow. They informed no one, including Elliot. The two people who valued rules above everything exceeded the speed limit almost the entire way. When Elliot woke and discovered they were gone, he smashed every vase in the living room.My parents moved into the room they believed had been mine.My mother whispered, "Why doesn't this place feel like Caleb?"I stood in the doorway and watched coldly. My actual room had been a damp, lightless woodshed whose walls grew mold whenever it rained. Of course this sunny bedroom held no trace of me.They didn't know that, so they began awkwardly imitating the life they believed I had lived. They learned to start the stove, split firewoo

My father remained silent for a long time, staring at my ruined face as though an invisible hand had closed around his throat. Finally, he reached out and gently pulled at my mother's hand. His voice broke with grief. "Caleb is already gone. We can't destroy Elliot too."My mother's eyelashes trembled. She stopped demanding the recordings and became silent.Ice seemed to swallow my entire spirit. Wasn't even my life enough to buy the truth?Everything left in me went cold. But when a person dies, police still come even if the parents refuse to pursue anything. The room became cold and still.Detectives questioned everyone repeatedly, returning to every detail and contradiction. My parents were fortunate they had rehearsed their story beforehand. Otherwise, the lies would never have survived.Beneath the table, they gripped each other's hands for support. "It wasn't an abduction. Our son ran away with a girl and was deceived by people he met. His death was an accident. He sto

A reporter's instinct for a sensational story always moved faster than human compassion.Russ ran with the camera on his shoulder, terrified of missing a second of it.Caught among them, I drifted back into the hog pen with the crowd.I didn't know what my mother saw, but every trace of life seemed to leave her. Her knees gave way, and she collapsed. My father froze too and caught the rail before he fell.I leaned around him to look.I hadn't seen a mirror in seven years. So this was what I had become.Years of starvation had reduced me to skin stretched over bone, almost a skeleton wearing flesh. The back of my skull had collapsed inward, and the hogs had torn the flesh from part of my right calf.Russ dropped the camera, covered his mouth, and crouched in the dirt retching.Dana stared with one hand over her mouth. Even years of professional training couldn't produce a single word.My mother crawled forward like someone possessed and pulled my body into her arms. "Caleb! H
