Chapter 2

Author: Peachy
I meant to go straight home, but my anxiety dragged me back to the restoration archives.

I needed to calm down. I needed a plan.

Walking down the dim museum corridors, a few vampires glided silently past me like shadows.

Their pale, flawless faces looked eerie in the candlelight.

Thank God I never sent Morpheus a face pic.

Otherwise, any of these ancient beings could instantly spot the stupid human flirting with their kind online.

Stripping them wasn't an option. But I had another lead.

I scrolled back to last month. Morpheus had mentioned needing a custom signet ring for an "important family dinner."

I hadn't hesitated to recommend a wildly rare blood-garnet.

"Morpheus, are you by any chance wearing that signet ring I picked out for you?"

My phone buzzed. Instant reply.

"Of course I am."

Then a second text, dripping with that usual, blush-inducing aggression.

"I'm rubbing the stone with my thumb right now. But all I can think about is that collarbone pic you sent last night. Touching this ring feels like touching you..."

My face flushed again, but I snapped out of it. Now was not the time to swoon.

He was wearing it.

If I found the man with the blood-garnet ring, I’d find my secret vampire.

Right then, the intercom on my desk rang.

"Isabella, bring the files for tomorrow's board meeting to my office. Now."

It was Alistair Thorne.

My direct boss. A high-ranking executive in the Valerius clan.

He had this incredibly rare, aristocratic elegance. Always polished, always polite.

In a building full of lethal predators, he was the only vampire who didn't make my skin crawl.

"Right away, Mr. Thorne."

I took a deep breath, shoved my phone in my pocket, grabbed the files, and took the elevator to the top floor.

The top floor was lined with thick wool carpets. My heels made no sound.

Reaching Alistair's office, I raised my hand to knock. But the heavy mahogany door was slightly ajar.

A voice drifted through the crack.

"Please... my love... can you forgive me?"

My hand froze mid-air. I had never heard Alistair sound like this.

The normally composed, arrogant high-vampire was practically begging.

"Once this blows over, I’ll pin you down and kiss you for three days straight."

My heart hammered. I held my breath.

"But tomorrow... I really can't see you." Alistair's voice suddenly shook with genuine anxiety. "Prince Cassian is inspecting the museum tomorrow. I have to be ready."

Alistair took a deep breath. His tone turned ridiculously soft again.

"After tomorrow, okay? I promise."

The call ended.

I quickly fixed my face and knocked.

"Enter."

His voice was back to its usual icy arrogance, as if that desperate phone call had been a hallucination.

"Mr. Thorne, here is the new acquisitions report for tomorrow."

Plastering on a flawless fake smile, I walked up to his massive desk and handed over the files.

"Leave them. You're always thorough. I trust your work," Alistair said flatly, reaching out a pale hand to take them.

In that exact second, my eyes locked onto his right hand.

On his ring finger, a blood-garnet signet ring gleamed.

The deep red stone caught the light like fresh blood, set in vintage white gold.

Exactly like the one I picked for Morpheus.

My breath caught. I almost screamed.

"Sir, that... that ring is beautiful," I forced my voice to stay level. "Where did you get it?"

Alistair glanced at his hand and gave a small smile. "Custom-made recently. Why?"

"Nothing. It's just very tasteful." I forced a tight smile. "I'll be going now."

"Alright. Get some rest."

I practically fled the office.

It was confirmed. Alistair was Morpheus.

But...

Who was "my love" on the phone?

If he had a real partner, a vampire partner...

What was I? A disposable human toy?

"Look at this."Amidst the suffocating tension, Cassian let out a cold laugh. He yanked his tie loose with one hand and shoved his phone right in front of my face.On the screen was our chat history, slapped with a glaring red exclamation mark on his last unsent message: Message failed to send. You have been blocked.I stopped breathing. The familiar profile picture, the spicy chat logs that made me blush, and my final, furious, bridge-burning text.I didn't just block him. I had stood right in front of him, crying over another man because of a cheap fake ring. I even called him a disgusting monster."Get him out. And don't bleed on my rug," Cassian ordered coldly, not even looking back. Two massive guards in black rushed in and dragged a limp Alistair out like a dead dog.The heavy study doors slammed shut, leaving me completely alone with the predator.Cassian stepped in closer, his massive body trapping me completely in the corner. His long, icy fingers started slowly tracing my c

A hangover hammered at my temples like a blunt object. I sat up, clutching my head as fragments of memory flooded back. The aurora he summoned for me, my drunken mess, and Cassian's crazy words."Waiting centuries for you."I shook my head, writing it off as drunk talk.Suddenly, my hand brushed my neck, and my heart stopped. My silver locket with my mom's picture was gone! It was all I had left of her; I couldn't lose it!Frantic, I tore the room apart but found nothing. Maybe it dropped in the observatory last night. I threw on a jacket and sprinted to Cassian's study.Just as I reached the heavy mahogany door, I heard Alistair howling in despair."Your Highness, please help me!""Seraphina is calling off the Blood Pact! She found out I've been texting old vampire flings in Houston!"I froze. My blood ran cold.Old vampire flings?"I swear it was just meaningless flirting! She's the only one I truly love!" Alistair's voice was full of terror and regret. So I wasn't even his only bac

"Come to the observatory with me."Cassian appeared at my door at dusk. He had ditched his formal black suit for a dark gray sweater, making him look a little less untouchable. But those ancient silver eyes still hid something I couldn't read."Right now?" I asked, confused."Right now." He left no room for argument.I followed him through the winding stone corridors up to the ancient observatory at the very top of the keep. A massive circular skylight offered a crystal-clear view of every star."Stand here." Cassian pointed right under the glass.I did as I was told, looking up at the starry sky. Then, Cassian lightly snapped his fingers.Instantly, the night sky lit up. Ribbons of green, blue, and purple danced like silk in the dark.He had actually tapped into draining, ancient vampire magic just to weave a spectacular aurora over North America. As the lights shifted and flowed, the whole sky burned just for me.I was stunned. This wasn't natural. This was power. A miracle only a r

"You're coming back to the stronghold with me."After the attack, Cassian's face was stone-cold. It wasn't a request. "You're their target now. The only place I can keep you absolutely safe is the Valerius stone keep, deep in the Adirondacks."I wanted to argue, but the unyielding look in his eyes made me swallow my words. An hour later, I was sitting in a lavish lounge deep within the keep. Towering bookshelves, antique oil paintings, a crackling fireplace. The whole place reeked of old-money North America.Cassian poured me a glass of red wine and sat across from me."You were brave today." He raised his glass. "To your composure."I took the glass and took a tiny sip. The wine was warm, but my feelings were an absolute mess."Why did they attack me?" I had to ask."Because you are important to me," Cassian answered, simple and direct. "Enemies always aim for the weakest link."I was important to him? A thousand-year-old vampire thought a normal human was important?"By the way," Cas

"If someone severed their soulmate bond in the worst way possible... why would they do it?"The silence in the car was deafening. All I could hear was the frantic pounding of my own heart.Later that night, Cassian dropped the chilling question out of nowhere on the drive home from the Gala.He sat on the far side of the spacious, bulletproof Lincoln limo. His long fingers lightly stroked his jaw. In the dark, those ancient silver eyes gleamed. My breath caught in my throat.Did this almighty vampire prince know about me and Morpheus? Was he mocking my pathetic online romance?"I don't know," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I don't know much about the whole soulmate thing.""Take a guess." His tone was casual, but I could feel the danger radiating off him.Humiliation washed over me. A thousand-year-old creature was using my emotional trauma for entertainment?I looked him dead in the eye, my voice turning to ice."Because that person is a liar."Cassian froze. He stared at m

Catching me glance at Alistair for help, Cassian’s brow twitched into a barely visible frown. But a second later, he was back to that suffocating calm."Your report was flawless," he said smoothly. "Gifted. It makes sense why you're one of the few humans chosen by the clan."Alistair jumped at the chance to kiss ass. "His Highness rarely tolerates the presence of humans. To praise Isabella like this is truly—"Cassian snapped his head toward him.A death glare sliced through the air like a blade. Alistair shut up instantly, his face going pale.I was even more confused. If Cassian hated humans, why did he get so close to me?Why comment on my mole with such... intimate familiarity?"Isabella," Cassian looked back at me, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You will be my date for tonight's Blood Moon Gala.""What?" I gasped.Going there meant walking straight into a banquet hall full of starving predators!"Your Highness, I'm just human. It's not appropriate—""Don't worry." Cassian
