CHAPTER SIX:

THE BETA'S INVESTIGATION

**Nyx POV**

I couldn't sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vieve's face, cold and threatening, her words kept ringing in my head. Every time I started to drift off, I felt the note burning in my pocket like it was on fire.

The note was hidden under my mattress now, but I kept thinking about it. Someone had tried to warn me. Someone had known what Vieve was planning. Someone who saw the future even before I sensed it.

Who?

Who could that b

CHAPTER EIGHT: VIEVE'S WEBVieve POVI stood at my bedroom window, watching the sun rise over Shadowmoon territory. My territory, even if no one else knew it yet.Everything was supposed to be perfect by now. Lora was dead. Derrick was broken and easy to control. The pack looked to me for guidance because their Alpha was drowning in grief.I should have been celebrating. But I'm not…Instead, I was standing here at dawn, unable to sleep, thinking about a green-eyed rogue who somehow made my brother's dead heart start beating again.Nyx Brooks. Even her name sounded so fake.I took a sip of my coffee and replayed yesterday in my mind. Finding that rogue in Lora's room, holding Lora's diary. Reading all those entries about me, about my "suspicious behavior" and "secret meetings."Lora had been watching me more closely than I realized. I'd thought I was so careful, so clever. But she'd noticed things. Written them down.Good thing I had the diary now. I'd already burned it in my firepla

CHAPTER 7THE START OF SOMETHING BIG . Nyx POV. "There's something else," Martin said, pulling out more papers. "Look at these patrol schedules. The real ones from the night of the ambush."He spread them out, and I leaned over to study them. They showed which wolves were supposed to be patrolling which areas."Now look at the forged ones they said were in Lora's handwriting."He put another set next to the first. I compared them carefully."They're different," I said. "The forged ones changed the patrol routes. They moved wolves away from the eastern border.""Exactly where the rogues attacked." Martin pointed to the map. "If our wolves had been following the real schedule, they would have been in position to stop the ambush. But because someone changed the routes...""Ten wolves died," I finished quietly."And Lora got blamed for it." Martin's hands were shaking with anger. "She tried to warn Derrick something was wrong. The night before the ambush, she told him she'd overheard su

Someone had known what Vieve was planning. Someone who saw the future even before I sensed it. Who?Who could that be?. I rolled over in bed for the hundredth time, staring at the ceiling. The holding cabin was quiet except for the sound of guards shifting outside my door. They were supposed to keep me from escaping, but really, they just made me feel more trapped in this twisted game of finding justice.A soft knock made me sit up fast."Nyx?" Martin's voice came through the door, barely a whisper. "Are you awake?"I got up and opened the door. Martin stood there in dark clothes, looking around nervously li

CHAPTER FIVE GROWING SUSPICIONNyx POV. I spun around, heart exploding in panic.I've been caught. Vieve stood in the doorway, her silver eyes cold and angry. She looked perfect as always, her black hair pulled back, her clothes expensive and neat. But there was something dangerous in her expression. More like she could literally kill me here. "I asked you a question, rogue." She stepped inside and closed the door behind her. "What are you doing in Luna's room?"Think fast. I couldn't let her know I'd found the note. I mustn't let her know. "I was cleaning," I said, trying to sound calm. "Elder Thorne said to clean the third floor.""He specifically said not to enter this room." Vieve moved closer, her eyes searching my face for any hidden clue. "Why are you really here? What are you looking for?""Nothing. I just..." I looked around the room trying to act less suspicious. "I heard about the Luna. About what happened to her. I was curious.""Curious?" Vieve's laugh was sharp, har

CHAPTER FOUR: GHOSTS IN THE HALLWAYS**Nyx POV**I woke up before sunrise, my body still aching from yesterday's sparring match with Derrick. Every muscle reminded me that I'd fought an Alpha and somehow survived.More than survived. I'd impressed him. That wasn't good. The closer he looked at me, the more likely he'd see the truth.I got dressed in the simple clothes Elder Thorne had given me: dark jeans and a plain grey shirt. Nothing fancy. Just another pack member doing her job.Except I wasn't just another pack member. I was a ghost walking through my old life, searching for proof that would clear my name. The pack house was quiet when I walked over. Most wolves were still sleeping. The sun was just starting to peek over the trees, painting the sky pink and orange.I remembered watching sunrises like this with Derrick. He'd wrap his arms around me from behind, and we'd stand on the balcony of our room, planning our future. That future died the day I did."You're early." Elder Th

CHAPTER THREE: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERSNyx POV "Sit."Derrick's office was exactly how I remembered it. Dark wood furniture, bookshelves lining the walls, a massive desk covered in pack documents. The only difference was the coldness in the air, like warmth which it once had, had been sucked out of the room completely leaving no trace. I sat in the chair across from his desk, very aware of the two guards standing by the door. Vieve leaned against the wall, her silver eyes never leaving me.Derrick stood by the window, his back to me. Morning light made his black hair shine. I remembered running my fingers through that hair, remembered how soft it felt.Stop it, I told myself. That was before. This is now."You said you wanted to join my pack." His voice was flat, emotionless. "Why?""I told you. I need a home.""There are other packs. Smaller ones. Friendlier ones." He turned around, and those blue eyes pinned me in place. "Why choose the pack with the strictest no-rogue policy in th
