Chapter 5

Author: Tiptik
A flicker of surprise crossed Carlo's eyes. He clearly hadn't expected me to reject his closeness. In the past, this would have been exactly what I had longed for.

Anger and embarrassment flashed across his face. He slammed the door to the guest bedroom and stalked off to another room. Once he was gone, I collapsed into bed and fell asleep almost immediately. Since I had stopped overthinking everything, even falling asleep had become easy.

The next morning, my godfather, Giovanni Esposito, called.

Somehow, he had heard that I was headed to Porta Nova and offered to see me off. I politely declined, but he insisted that he had already reserved a table and wanted me to join some family friends for a small gathering. At that point, I could hardly refuse.

When I arrived that evening, Carlo was there as well. As a friend of Giovanni, his presence wasn't surprising. What was unexpected was Lucia. Even in such a private gathering, Carlo had brought her along.

When Carlo saw me, he gestured for me to sit down, but I pretended not to notice. Standing together, Carlo and Lucia looked perfectly matched. I decided it was better not to interfere.

Lucia caught my eye and smiled with a hint of provocation, then quickly masked it with a faux apology. "Sorry for crashing your gathering. I was just bored, and Carlo decided to bring me along."

Carlo seemed about to speak, but his words died on his lips.

I lifted my glass with a smile and said, "Since godfather doesn't mind, I won't either."

I took a small sip.

As I chatted with others, my phone kept buzzing nonstop. When I picked it up, I saw a message from Carlo.

"I only brought her along casually. Don't read too much into it. If it bothers you, I won't bring her next time."

The last message read, "After dinner, let's go home together."

I cleared my throat and typed back, "No need. You and Lucia go ahead. I drove myself here."

Then I ignored the notifications and gave my full attention to the gathering.

The gathering was lively, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Giovanni's eyes were red from the wine as he stood and raised his glass to me.

"Anna, you are the godchild I am most proud of. Your dream has always been to work in Porta Nova. I never understood why you stayed in Astonia all those years ago."

He paused, then continued, "But now, it's different. You're finally going to Porta Nova. I know your late parents would be proud. Here's to you, wishing you a smooth journey and a bright future."

I smiled warmly, raised my glass, and drank it in one go. Across the table, Carlo stared blankly, as if he had just heard something unbelievable.

Two years had passed, and I had firmly established myself in Porta Nova as the head of the Pruvian region. My office occupied a high-rise with a clear view of the bustling city streets below. The afternoon sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm, peaceful glow across the room. On my desk, amid neatly stacked files, sat a small pot of succulents. It had been given to me by a colleague. I had taken careful care of it, and its leaves had grown green and plump.Over these years, I had devoted almost all my energy to my work. I had grown from a project assistant into a leader capable of handling major responsibilities independently. The hardships were mine alone to endure, but the satisfaction of seeing a project succeed made every struggle worthwhile.During breaks, I would sit with colleagues at a nearby cafe, order a shot of espresso, and listen as they chatted in Pruvian, with the soft cadence of Porta Nova, about family life and the latest design trends.A

Carlo cried so hard he could barely speak. He clung to me desperately, refusing to accept that we were breaking up, and insisted on coming with me to Porta Nova.I couldn't argue with him, and in the end, I relented. He held me tightly, looking like a man who had just regained something he thought was lost, while I could only bitterly savor what might be our last embrace.Early Saturday morning, I quietly packed my things. My wardrobe had never held many clothes, mostly blacks, whites, and grays, which now felt dull and suffocating. I folded each piece carefully and placed it in my suitcase. The books on the shelves, the skincare products on the vanity, and the scattered little items all carried memories. Now, every memory felt like a sharp shard of glass, cutting whenever I thought of it. I didn't shed a tear, nor did I lose control. My heart felt hollow and empty, yet it was unusually calm. Perhaps nothing is more sorrowful than a heart that has given up, or perhaps I finally un

Tears fell from Carlo's eyes, hitting the floor with a soft, rhythmic patter. In the past, I would have instinctively reached out to wipe them, but now I did nothing and simply watched. Could a powerful Don like Carlo really shed tears for me?He fought to hold back his emotions and met my gaze. "Anna, I'll go with you to Porta Nova.""I understood the magnitude of his words. His family, his friends, and his empire were all in Astonia. If he came with me, he would have to leave everything behind.I turned my face away. I thought I had grown numb, but when I looked at it all so vividly, my heart still ached.I held back my emotions and said, "I'm sorry, Carlo, but I can't take you with me."He stepped closer, wrapping me in his arms. His tears soaked my dress as he pleaded, "Anna, I'll give up everything in Astonia for you. I want you. Please, take me with you."I was usually soft-hearted and easily swayed, but this time I pushed him away. "Carlo, let's break up. We're from differ

I told him, "I've already bought the plane ticket for next Saturday."A tense silence filled the room.Carlo broke the silence first and anxiously said, "Anna, we need to have a serious talk. I can't stand how things are between us right now."I asked, "What's the matter? Did something happen?"He had always wanted me to be more understanding, but now that I was, he seemed dissatisfied. He narrowed his eyes. "Is this because of Lucia?"I said nothing. He frowned and continued, "If my relationship with her bothers you, I can cut it off, but you can't keep acting so indifferent. Can you at least care enough to let me know how you feel?"His eyes searched mine, as if this request required all the courage he could muster.I answered calmly, "You're overthinking. I really don't mind anymore. It's your choice who you associate with, and I have no right to interfere."I never expected him to offer to cut ties with Lucia so easily. In the past, no matter how we argued or even threate

Lucia continued, "If you don't come pick me up, I'll have to walk there myself. Can you really stand to let that happen?"A flicker of hesitation crossed Carlo's face.In the past, I probably would have been asked to get out of the car immediately. Whenever Lucia needed him, he would say, "It's easy for you to get a cab here. Her side is too remote, so I have to go pick her up. You can take a cab yourself."Sensing his hesitation, I said thoughtfully, "Go ahead and pick her up. Just drop me off at any convenient intersection."Carlo grew a little anxious. "What about you? Never mind, I'll take you there first."I smiled lightly, feeling a sense of relief. "It's fine. I'll take a cab myself. Just stop at the curb up ahead."I pointed toward the street ahead. Carlo paused for a moment, then finally pulled the car over.I unbuckled my seatbelt. Just as I was about to get out, he suddenly called after me, "Anna, I'll be home earlier today."I nodded in acknowledgment. He looked at

I explained calmly, "I'm going to take care of some paperwork for going abroad. I really can't get away. Your Consigliere is getting engaged, so it makes sense for you to be there. I'll be fine on my own."He probed gently, "If you're not going, should I take Lucia?"In the past, just hearing that name would have made my heart race, but now I only smiled lightly. "Sure."He searched my face for any sign of jealousy but found nothing.Carlo couldn't help but ask, "Anna, why aren't you even a little jealous?"I stared at him, noticing how strange he seemed. Hadn't he always hated it when I got jealous?"I have nothing to be jealous about," I said. "She's your friend, and she gets along with your family. Isn't it natural for you to take her?"He opened his mouth a few times as if to argue, then finally said, "Then I'll take you to handle your paperwork tomorrow morning first."I didn't refuse. I was dizzy and didn't want to drive, so having him take me was fine.Carlo reached out
