The icy wind of dawn howled through the iron portcullis of the Blackthorn fortress, carrying the sharp scent of pine and fresh frost. Pale golden light bled over the jagged peaks of the eastern ridge, burning away the thick shadows of the night.

In the courtyard below, the heavy iron doors of the lower dungeons swung open with a long, metallic groan.

Lyra stood beside the grand stone steps, her dark cloak wrapped tightly around her shoulders against the biting morning draft. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as two pack guards emerged from the subterranean stairway, supporting a tall, gaunt figure between them.

"Leo," Lyra gasped, taking a swift step forward.

His silver bindings had been removed, leaving raw, red burns along his wrists and forearms. Though weak and pale from days of dark confinement, Leo walked under his own power, his head held high. When his dark eyes caught hers, a breathless, disbelief-filled smile broke across his exhausted face.

"Lyra," Leo rasped, his voice rough from disuse.

She didn't care about pack decorum, the watching guards, or the cold morning air. Lyra ran down the stone steps and threw her arms around her brother’s neck, pulling him into a tight, desperate embrace. Leo stumbled slightly back from the impact, but his arms wrapped around her back, holding her as if she might vanish into the morning mist.

"You're free," she whispered, tears burning hot against her cold cheeks. "Victoria confessed. The archives proved it. Ethan cleared your name."

Leo pulled back, his dark eyes searching her face with intense concern. He took in the slight shadow along her jaw and the faint purple bruise near her collarbone where Victoria’s boot had struck her hours earlier.

"And you?" Leo asked quietly, his voice dropping into a low, protective register. "Are you coming with me? The guards said my exile is lifted, but you... you're still wearing the Luna's cloak, Lyra."

Lyra stilled, her hand lingering on his arm. Before she could answer, heavy, unhurried footsteps sounded at the top of the grand stairs.

Ethan stepped out into the morning sunlight. He wore his full Alpha armor—black steel shoulder guards over a thick dark leather tunic, his long sword strapped to his waist. His imposing, broad-shouldered frame cast a towering shadow over the courtyard. His sharp, amber-gold eyes swept over the pair, settling on Lyra with an intense, possessive weight that made her wolf stir restlessly beneath her skin.

Leo instinctively stepped in front of Lyra, putting his body between his sister and the Alpha who had locked him in silver chains.

"Alpha Black," Leo said, his voice laced with guarded hostility. "My sister proved my innocence and uncovered the real traitor in your ranks. Our debt to the Blackthorn Pack is settled."

Ethan walked down the stone steps with slow, deliberate grace, stopping three paces away. He didn't look at Leo; his focus remained locked entirely on Lyra.

"Your debt is settled, Leo Hayes," Ethan stated, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that resonated through the quiet courtyard. "You are free to leave the territory. A horse and three weeks' rations are waiting for you at the eastern gate, along with a purse of silver from the pack treasury as compensation for your unlawful imprisonment."

Leo narrowed his eyes. "And my sister?"

"Your sister remains," Ethan answered flatly.

"The deal was for both of us!" Leo snapped, taking an angry step forward, his fists clenching despite his weakened state. "She agreed to play your fake Luna to save my life! Now that Victoria is in chains and my name is clear, Lyra owes you nothing!"

"Leo, stop," Lyra interjected gently, laying a hand on her brother's chest to hold him back.

She turned to face Ethan, drawing herself up to her full height. Her dark eyes flashed with an icy, fearless defiance that matched his amber glare.

"He's right, Ethan," Lyra said smoothly, her voice clear and carrying across the stone courtyard. "The contract was built on a single premise: I serve as your Luna until my brother’s name is cleared. The truth is out. The pack elders know Victoria was the poisoner. The fake union has served its purpose."

A faint, dark smirk curved the corner of Ethan’s sharp lips—a look that was equal parts dangerous and intensely magnetic. He stepped closer, stepping right past Leo until he stood mere inches from Lyra, his powerful aura wrapping around her like a heavy velvet blanket.

"You played the Luna so well at the summit that the elders have already ratified our union in the pack ledger, Mrs. Black," Ethan murmured, his voice dropping into a register meant only for her ears. "If I announce today that my Luna is leaving across the eastern border, the pack will see it as weakness. The rival packs are already circling our borders like vultures, waiting for a crack in our armor."

"That is your political problem, not mine," Lyra countered, leaning up to meet his gaze directly. "You are the ruthless Alpha of Blackthorn. You can handle a few rival packs without hiding behind a fake contract."

Ethan reached out, his long, warm fingers wrapping gently around her wrist. His grip was firm, unyielding, but surprisingly careful, avoiding the faint bruises on her skin. His thumb traced a slow, deliberate circle against her rapid pulse.

"It stopped being a fake contract the moment you bled for this pack in the archives," Ethan growled softly, his amber eyes burning with a raw, fierce intensity that made her breath hitch in her throat. "You saved my life from Victoria's lies, Lyra. You stood in front of my elders and matched my strength. You think I am going to let the most powerful woman in this territory walk away?"

"I am not your property, Ethan," she whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"No," Ethan agreed, his voice thick with a dark, breathtaking promise. "You are my equal. And I don't give up what is mine."

He turned his head toward Leo, his tone shifting back into that cold, absolute Alpha command. "Marcus will escort you to the eastern gate, Leo. You have safe passage across the border. But if you step foot back in Blackthorn territory without my invitation, you will be treated as an outsider."

Leo looked between Ethan and Lyra, his face pale with frustration and fear. "Lyra... don't let him do this. Come with me. We can go south, beyond the mountains."

Lyra looked at her brother, seeing the freedom she had fought so hard to give him. Then she looked at Ethan—the ruthless Alpha who had started as her family's executioner, but had stood beside her in the dark archives and disarmed the true monster in his pack.

She realized with a sudden, terrifying clarity that part of her didn't want to run anymore.

"Go, Leo," Lyra said softly, offering her brother a reassuring smile. "Go south. Rebuild our family's trade route. Safe passage is what we fought for."

"Lyra..." Leo hesitated, his voice trembling.

"I am not a prisoner here anymore, Leo," she said, looking back up into Ethan's burning amber eyes. "I am choosing to stay and finish what we started."

Leo searched her eyes for a long, quiet moment, seeing the unyielding resolve that had always defined his older sister. Finally, he gave a slow, reluctant nod. He pulled her into one last tight embrace, whispered a quiet promise to stay in touch through the border couriers, and turned to follow Marcus toward the waiting horse at the gate.

Lyra watched until her brother mounted the stallion and rode out through the iron portcullis, his figure disappearing into the golden morning light of the forest.

The heavy gates slammed shut with a final, echoing thud.

Lyra stood alone in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by the high stone walls of the Blackthorn fortress. She turned slowly to face Ethan, who hadn't moved an inch from her side.

"He's free," Lyra said quietly.

"He is," Ethan acknowledged, his hand sliding up her arm to rest over her shoulder, drawing her cloak tighter around her against the cold wind. "And now, Mrs. Black, we have a pack to run."

Lyra raised her chin, a sharp, challenging smile touching her lips. "Then you had better be ready, Alpha. Because if I am staying as your Luna, I am not standing in your shadow."

Ethan let out a low, gravelly laugh—a rich, rare sound that vibrated deep in his chest—and captured her hand in his, pulling her up the grand stairs toward the keep.

  • Shattered Promises of the Alpha   The Golden Dawn

The thick, suffocating gloom that had blanketed the Blackthorn Pack fortress for months dissolved beneath the brilliant, golden light of an autumn sun.In the central courtyard, the blood-stained ice and scorched earth from the Silverfang raid had been thoroughly cleared. Banners of deep crimson and obsidian silk hung from every stone rampart, snapping proudly in the crisp mountain wind. The air smelled no longer of wolfsbane and copper, but of roasting venison, spiced cider, and blooming pine.Hundreds of pack members—from low-ranking village elders and blacksmiths to high-ranking border warriors—filled the lower square. The victory at Frostbite Gorge had resonated through every corner of the territory. The Silverfang Pack had signed an absolute surrender, yielding their border outposts and agreeing to pay annual tributes, cementing Blackthorn as the undisputed sovereign power of the northern ridge.High above the crowd, inside the Luna’s private solar, Lyra stood before a full-lengt

  • Shattered Promises of the Alpha   Blood on the Ice

The wind howling through Frostbite Gorge sounded like a dying beast, whistling through the narrow jagged cliffs and driving sheets of sharp, icy sleet down into the ravine.Deep within the stone bottleneck, two hundred feet below the sheer cliff edges, the vanguard of the Silverfang Pack moved in near-total silence. Over a hundred heavily armored warriors, led by Alpha Logan himself, picked their way across the frozen creek bed. Logan’s calculated ambush depended entirely on speed and secrecy; if he cleared the gorge before midnight, his strike force would pour into the unprotected rear courtyard of the Blackthorn fortress while Ethan’s main garrison was busy chasing smoke at the outer valley gates.High above them, perched like shadows on the snow-dusted granite ridge, Ethan and Lyra looked down at the advancing enemy.Lyra pulled the hood of her black fur-lined cloak closer around her face, her eyes cold and calculating as she mapped the terrain. A bitter autumn wind whipped through the northern watchtowers, bringing with it the sharp scent of damp pine, ozone, and approaching storm clouds.Lyra stood on the stone parapet overlooking the valley below, her dark velvet cloak fluttering violently around her ankles. Beside her, Ethan leaned his forearms against the iron railing, his eyes narrowed into cold amber slits as he scanned the tree line at the edge of the Blackthorn territory. In the valley three miles out, thin plumes of dark smoke snaked up into the grey sky—the burned remains of an outer border village."It's the Silverfang Pack," Ethan said, his deep voice carrying a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the stone under their boots. "Alpha Logan has been testing our perimeter since news of Victoria’s arrest leaked to the council. He thinks our pack is fractured.""Logan thinks he can capitalize on a perceived power vacuum," Lyra replied, her voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute tactical clarity. "He expe

  • Shattered Promises of the Alpha   The Secrets of the Vault

The night of the new moon settled over the Blackthorn Pack fortress like a heavy wool blanket. Without a sliver of moonlight to illuminate the high stone ramparts, the courtyard below was cast in pitch-black shadows, punctured only by the flickering amber flames of a few scattered iron torches. In the master suite, Lyra stood motionless behind the heavy velvet drapes of the solar window. Down in the courtyard, she watched Ethan mount his shadow-black stallion. Surrounded by a dozen heavily armed elite enforcers, the Alpha rode out through the iron portcullis, heading toward the eastern border to inspect the scout posts as promised. As the heavy oak gates thundered shut behind them, the fortress fell into a tense, suffocating quiet.Lyra reached into her tunic, her fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy iron key Ethan had left on his desk. The scent of spilled pine wine, roasting meat, and heavy wolf pheromones still lingered in the Great Hall, but the tension from the summit had shifted into something far more dangerous. The elders had accepted the fake union—for now. Standing at Ethan’s right hand, wearing the heavy velvet cloak of the Luna, Lyra had successfully deflected the sharpest inquiries from Council Elder Vane and Victoria’s political allies. She had smiled when required, bowed her head with practiced grace, and allowed Ethan’s possessive hand to rest at her waist in a display of unquestionable unity. Now, hours after the last pack leader had departed, the fortress was hushed. Moonlight poured through the high arched glass of the private solar on the third floor, casting long, barred shadows across the stone floor.Lyra stood by the hearth, her back to the grand double doors. She had unpinned the Luna cloak, letting the dark fabric drop in a pool at her feet. In her simple linen tunic and leather trousers, sh
