Chapter 2

Author: HF Era
Sophie let go of Joshua and walked toward me.

She pulled a few tissues from the table, her tone softening. That was rare for her.

"Alright, don't be upset. Wasn't it you who asked me to take better care of Joshua back then?"

Yes. Back then, I pitied him.

When Joshua had cried and begged me to fund his education, I gave in. I brought him out of that remote mountain village myself.

I sent him to the best schools, hoping he could grow freely, without limits.

However, I never imagined that the person I pulled out of the mud with my own hands would one day step on me to reach things he could never have touched before.

Sophie stopped in front of me, trying to wipe the markings off my face.

However, the ink would not come off. The more she rubbed, the worse it smeared.

My carefully styled appearance fell apart. My face was a mess of dark streaks like a ridiculous clown.

Joshua covered his mouth, already laughing. The smugness in his eyes was not even hidden.

"Sophie, I almost forgot. We've got that business banquet in half an hour. We should go."

At that, Sophie's expression sharpened.

She turned to look at me.

"Right… We're out of time. Anthony, I was going to bring you along, but it looks like we'll have to reschedule.

"Head home. When I get back tonight, we'll talk."

Joshua stood at her side. As he turned away from me, he tilted his head slightly–and flashed me a quick, subtle smile.

There was no apology in it. Only naked provocation. Only victory.

I watched Sophie follow him without a second thought.

The last trace of warmth in my chest quietly vanished.

"Sophie, if you can't handle this, I'll deal with it my own way."

She finally turned back toward me. Her face was blank, even tinged with impatience.

"Enough, Anthony. Stop being unreasonable. We'll talk when I get back."

With that, she left with Joshua.

The door was not fully closed. Voices from the hallway drifted in, broken and faint.

First, Joshua's lowered voice: soft, anxious, almost pitiful.

"Sophie, Anthony is so jealous, and he's always making a fuss. What if he tries to get back at me? What should I do?"

Then, I heard Sophie's voice: calm and certain.

"He wouldn't dare. I know Anthony. He loves me too much. He'd never do anything to hurt me."

Their footsteps faded into the distance.

I got into my car and sent a message to the Kastor family, the hosts of tonight's banquet.

[Send Joshua to me at ten tonight.]

In the city, at the very top of the social circle, everyone was desperate for a chance to curry favor with me.

Joshua had just handed the Kastor family that opportunity.

If there was no retaliation, then I did not deserve to carry the Miller name.

Three months later, I heard news about Sophie. She was no longer the sharp and pointed girl she used to be.Time had worn down that reckless courage of hers. In its place, the comforts she had grown used to, and the pride that came with them, had become the heaviest chains binding her.She could not bring herself to beg for help, nor could she endure the pity, or worse, the disdain, of those she had once looked down on.After hitting wall after wall, whatever faint spark she had left of making a comeback had probably faded into nothing more than a wisp of smoke.Jasper's voice carried a trace of quiet resignation."As for Mr. Payne, he doesn't seem to understand the situation at all. He's been fighting with Ms. Spark day and night, demanding the same luxury items he used to have, insisting she take him to high-end restaurants."Joshua simply could not accept the fall from the clouds into the mud.He had grown used to being pampered by Sophie with money and extravagance. He coul

Sophie fell silent, tears finally spilling over. However, her tears stirred nothing in me.She murmured, the last light in her eyes fading completely. "Anthony, you were prepared all along. You had long decided to treat me like this…"I shook my head. "No. I gave you far more chances than you think."She simply never took a single one.Joshua finally broke down.He suddenly wrenched himself free from the bodyguards and dropped to his knees with a thud, scrambling toward me on his hands and knees."Mr. Miller! I know I was wrong! I shouldn't have provoked you. I shouldn't have touched what belongs to you!"Please spare me! I'll leave the city immediately. I swear I'll never appear in front of you again for the rest of my life! Just let me live!"He sobbed uncontrollably, snot and tears running down his face, nothing like the arrogant man he had been before.I looked down at him as if he were nothing more than a filthy insect.I asked slowly, "Joshua, do you know what I despise

Jackson stepped forward."According to the Equity Agreement Ms. Spark signed seven years ago, during the term of the agreement, if either party commits a serious breach, including but not limited to cohabiting with another person or bearing someone else's child, the other party has the right to unilaterally request a freeze on all shares and related interests under the offending party's name."He paused, his gaze sweeping over Sophie's ashen face."As of yesterday, all shares of the Spark Corporation held under Ms. Spark's name has been officially frozen with approval from both the notary office and the court."A wave of hushed gasps and murmurs rippled through the conference room.Sophie stared at me, her fists clenched tightly at her sides.Jackson continued, "Ms. Spark, during the freeze period, you will be unable to exercise any shareholder rights, including but not limited to attending shareholder meetings, participating in decision-making, or receiving dividends. Sophie only glanced at the document for a second. She frowned slightly, but there was no trace of shock or panic on her face. Instead, there was irritation, like she was interrupted, and even a hint of amusement. When she looked at me, her eyes were filled with disappointment and reproach."Anthony, are you done yet? All this over something so trivial? You're pulling strings with your family, freezing shares…"Do you have any idea how much damage this could do to the company?"She did not take the document seriously at all. Or rather, she did not believe I would actually go through with it.In her mind, it was probably just another one of my emotional outbursts, something driven by jealousy. A mess I had made, one that she would eventually come back to fix and smooth over.We had been together for ten years.Deep down, Sophie must have been certain of one thing: I would never walk away over a single act of betrayal."I don't have time to argue about this right now. Whatever it

Crying and struggling, Joshua was dragged away by the bodyguards. From outside, the familiar sound of a car engine approached.Sophie walked in, her usual smile resting lightly on her lips. She set down a luxury shopping bag stamped with a watch brand logo, then slipped into my arms, her voice soft and coaxing."Anthony, Joshua really went too far today. Tonight, you can have me however you want. Just don't hold it against him, alright?"A cheap perfume scent drifted toward me as she moved. It was Joshua's scent. The nausea rose instantly. I shoved Sophie away without thinking. She froze, disbelief and panic flashing across her eyes. She stepped forward instinctively, as if trying to pull me back. Then, Joshua suddenly rushed in, stumbling straight into her arms."Sophie! For revenge, he had tattoos burned into every inch of my skin… It hurts so much…"Sophie's breathing faltered. She looked at Joshua's disheveled state, her expression growing furious."Anthony, when did yo

The car had barely stopped at the villa entrance when Jasper Lewis, the housekeeper, hurried over."Ms. Spark came back earlier. She said she wanted to take Mr. Payne to tonight's charity auction, but he didn't have a suitable outfit."He hesitated, then added, "She… She took him straight into your dressing room."My heart sank, though my voice remained steady."What did Joshua choose?"Jasper took a deep breath, clearly holding back his anger."The 'Blazing Flame', the one Ms. Spark specially made for you."My breath caught. The 'Blazing Flame' was not some custom piece from a luxury brand. It was my grandmother's design, something she had poured her heart into before she passed, stitching it together by hand, piece by piece, as a wedding suit. That outfit's value could no longer be measured in money. As my girlfriend, Sophie knew exactly how much it meant to me.I had never doubted that she once loved me.However, in that moment, I understood that love can change in an i
