Chapter 10

Author: Bright Light
The card reader beeped. "Insufficient funds."

Winona spread her hands. "I've got no money. Nothing I can do. Let it go unsold."

Beside her, Daniel bit down on his fist to keep from laughing. He tugged at her sleeve with feigned concern. "Winnie, Jordan is going to be so upset with you."

Winona let out a short, contemptuous sound. "How dare he break up with me. Without me, he's nothing."

I stared at her flushed, furious face.

After a long moment, I looked away, let out a quiet, self-directed

Winona watched as a man in a funeral service uniform wheeled my body out. When the footage ended, the doctor beside her exhaled. "Miss Elstein, I hope that sets the record straight. Our hospital has nothing to hide."Winona said nothing. Then realization struck. She turned and hurried out, moving fast, almost running, back to the room where I had spent my final days.A new patient already occupied the bed. He stared at her as she tore through the drawers, confusion giving way to anger. "Who are you?"The composure she had always worn like armor was gone."The pills. Where are the pills?"A family member stepped in from the hallway, took one look at her, and pulled the patient behind them. "What is wrong with you?""The pills!" She could not move past those two words. She repeated them over and over. The family member let out a short, contemptuous scoff, reached into a jacket pocket, and tossed a pill bottle onto the floor."You're with the last patient? It's just a bottle of p

The nurse spoke quickly. "There must be some misunderstanding. Let me get the doctor and pull the records."Winona let out a long, quiet exhale, as if something wound too tight had finally loosened.Daniel released a similar breath beside her.She crossed her arms and listened with cold eyes as the doctor explained, "Mr. Wilford arranged for a private funeral service to collect him. It happened not long ago. You're welcome to review the security footage—"She cut him off, "That's enough. Drop the act. Tell Jordan the wedding goes ahead in two days. If he doesn't show up, I'll marry Danny instead."Daniel looked as though he had to physically restrain a grin.…Two days passed. I didn't appear.Winona hadn't been bluffing. She walked Daniel to the altar and went through with the ceremony. When it came time to exchange rings, her hand began to shake. She couldn't bring herself to let him slide the ring onto her finger.None of the guests had expected a groom swap. They offered

Not leverage, not bait. Just humiliation. She wanted me to see exactly how little I was worth once she made up her mind.”The room understood the situation. No one dared raise a paddle after that. No one wanted to end up on her bad side. No one except a woman near the back, the CEO of a small company, who seemed to miss every signal and called out a bid of 20,000 dollars. The bracelet went to her. She slipped it onto her wrist at the ta

The antique specialist studied the photo in silence for a long moment, his expression carefully uneasy.Winona turned to Colby, her voice deliberately loud. "Tell Jordan that if he doesn't show up tonight, the bracelet goes unsold, and I won't give him a single cent to buy it back."…That evening, Winona arrived at the charity gala with Daniel at her side. Her gaze swept the room again and again, searching for a face that never appeared. Her expression remained flat, edged with displeasure.Someone in the crowd could not hold back. "Miss Elstein, I see you've brought Danny again tonight. Where's Jordan?"Winona kept her tone light. "He's unwell. Resting at the hospital."The guests exchanged glances, then rushed to praise her."Of course. We heard about the accident. You stayed by his side for two days straight. You love that man with everything you have. We're all so envious. When's the wedding? You have to let us celebrate with you."Something shifted in Winona's face, a sm

"I know you're all playing along with Jordan's little act. Tell him to stop performing and come out," Winona said coldly.Contempt rose in me like bile. In Winona's mind, I was always the one with schemes.I followed her upstairs and watched Daniel throw his arms around her the moment she walked in, clinging as if he were drowning.Winona went stiff for half a second, but she didn't push him away. She patted his back and made soothing sounds. "It's okay. You're safe. The doctor said anemia can cause bad dreams. Once the blood arrives, everything will be fine."Daniel nodded slowly against her shoulder, then asked in the most casual voice he could manage, "I heard Jordan refused to donate and slipped off somewhere. Is that true? Winnie, please don't be angry with him. It's fine. He doesn't have to. I'm just his blood match. If anything, I should be the one donating to him.""A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Anyone with eyes can see the game he's playing, but Winona falls for it every t

Winona stopped. Her expression darkened, and she snapped."What are you talking about? 65 ounces of blood, and he's dead? That's absurd. And that blood isn't even his."Colby trembled. "But Mr. Wilford has been through back-to-back surgeries. His body was already compromised. His veins collapsed at 27 ounces, and we kept drawing until 65…""Enough!" Winona cut him off, her voice rising. "Colby, the longer you talk, the more ridiculous you sound. You've worked for me for five years. Don't you dare take his side and lie to my face. And don't you dare curse him like that."She pushed the door open and found the blood draw room empty. That was when I came back. I opened my eyes and saw Winona walking toward me.I flinched on instinct, but her hand passed straight through my shoulder. She was staring at the bloody needle she had picked up from the floor. She said my name under her breath. "Jordan?"At that moment, I understood. I was floating, hovering somewhere above the floor."S
