Chapter 3

Corn 88
Alec could tell I was giving him the cold shoulder.

For a man used to commanding everyone’s attention, being ignored got under his skin far more than any screaming match.

He was used to being the center of attention and having Lindsay revolve around him. So, he kept provoking me to reassert his control and see just how much I would tolerate.

On Friday evening, an urgent project kept me at the office until nine.

The moment I opened the door to my apartment, an overpowering floral scent hit me.

It was not perfume. It was the thick, cloying scent of lilies.

I immediately covered my nose and mouth, but it was already too late.

Alec’s jacket was lying on my usual spot on the living room couch.

Its collar and cuffs were smeared with yellow lily pollen.

My airway suddenly constricted. My breathing turned fast and labored.

Each breath scraped my throat raw.

My legs gave out. I went down on the carpet.

“My meds…”

I crawled toward the coffee table. My emergency allergy medication was in the second drawer underneath.

My vision started to blur. Angry red welts spread rapidly across my exposed neck and arms. The welts itched so badly that it felt like my skin was crawling from the inside out.

The study door flew open with a bang.

Lindsay came out with a sketch in her hand.

“Ivan? You’re home?”

When she saw me on the floor, clawing at the carpet in agony, alarm flashed across her face. She rushed toward me.

“What’s wrong? Are you having another allergic reaction?”

Just as her hand was about to touch my shoulder…

“Ow!”

A cry came from behind her.

Alec stood beside the kitchen island with a pair of pruning shears in his hand. A bead of blood no bigger than a pinprick had formed on the tip of his finger.

“Lindsay, I’m hurt!”

Lindsay’s hand, which was reaching for me, stopped dead in midair.

She turned around.

Alec held up his finger. His eyes were wet with tears as he looked at her. His body was trembling slightly.

“I accidentally pricked myself on that rose thorn you left on the counter. I’m bleeding.”

Lindsay’s body moved before her mind caught up.

She sprang to her feet and crossed the room to Alec in a few quick strides. Grabbing his hand, she examined it with a deep frown, unable to hide the worry in her voice.

“How could you be so careless? Is it deep? Did the thorn break off inside?”

I was still on the carpet. My vision was blurred by involuntary tears, but I could still see everything unfolding before me with perfect clarity.

My throat had closed too tightly for me to speak. I could only clutch the edge of the carpet. I was digging my fingers in so hard that my nails nearly bent backward.

“Help... me...” I forced the words from my throat with the last of my strength.

Lindsay turned and glanced my way.

For a moment, she seemed torn. Then, her hesitation gave way to a cold certainty that she was doing the right thing.

“Ivan, Alec has a hand-modeling shoot for a luxury jewelry campaign tomorrow. He can’t afford to have a scar on his hand.

“If this gets infected, he could face an enormous contract penalty. I have to take him to the ER and get the wound treated.”

As she spoke, she grabbed the car keys from the entryway table without even making a move to help me.

“Your allergy medication is in the drawer. Just take a pill, and you’ll be fine in no time. I’ll be back later.”

With that, she placed a hand on Alec’s shoulder and guided him toward the door without looking back.

“Lindsay, Ivan looks really sick. He keeps gasping for air.” Alec’s feeble voice drifted over from the doorway.

“He always gets like this when his allergies flare up. He’ll be fine after taking his pills. Your hand is more important. Come on.”

Bang.

The door slammed shut.

The entire apartment fell deathly silent, broken only by the sound of my ragged breathing echoing through the living room.

With the last of my strength, I pulled open the drawer.

My hand closed around the familiar plastic pill bottle.

It felt too light.

My hands trembled as I opened it. It was completely empty.

After signing the contract, I pulled my impeccably tailored cashmere coat tighter around me and walked out of Aurexis Tower.Winter in Westmere was bitterly cold. Fine snow drifted from the sky and melted against the dark asphalt.A woman stood alone in the plaza outside the building. It was Lindsay. She wore a thin coat that had faded with age.I had heard that after her studio failed, she was left buried under an enormous amount of debt. She had turned to alcohol to numb the pain, eventually causing severe damage to her nervous system. The hands she had once taken such pride in were shaking violently beyond her control. She could no longer hold even the lightest pair of floral shears. When she saw me, her body jolted. Then, she stumbled toward me.“Ivan, I saw the news. Congratulations on winning the contract.”I stopped and regarded her coldly, as though she were a stranger who had nothing to do with me.“Why are you here?”“I just wanted to see you. I heard you were bac

Contaminants were present in the air.I immediately pulled a spare N95 respirator from my pocket and put it on. Hidden behind several broad-leafed plants, I spotted the disguised stalks of ragweed. The sabotage was crude. If I had handled the plants without protection, the pollen thrown into the air could have killed me.A judge spoke over the intercom. “Mr. Moyer, you have thirty minutes remaining. You may begin your installation. Is there a problem?”In the chamber beside mine, Alec was staring at me through the transparent divider. His eyes were bright with barely contained anticipation. He expected me to panic or collapse. Instead, I turned around and wheeled the entire cart of preapproved plants, including the hidden ragweed, out of my chamber. Then, I shut and locked the door.“Mr. Moyer, what are you doing? Are you refusing to use your approved materials?” a startled judge asked. “These materials don’t meet my safety standards.”I pressed the intercom button. “Please ha

Two years later, global technology giant Aurexis Group officially opened its new regional headquarters in Westmere, Caldria. As an industry leader, Aurexis launched an open competition to design the indoor landscape for its ground-floor lobby. The theme was “The Allergen-Free Living Atrium”.With a budget of fifty million dollars, the project demanded more than exceptional design. Every element also had to meet the strictest standards of ecological safety. As the lead designer of one of Rovenia’s foremost ecological design teams, I returned home to lead our bid.The competition was held in the panoramic conference center on the top floor of Aurexis Tower. The rules were demanding. Each team was assigned a sealed display chamber and given thirty minutes to construct a miniature landscape using preapproved plant materials. A panel of judges from around the world would observe from behind one-way glass as the designers presented their ecological concepts. When I entered the loun

Six months later, in early summer, the sunlight in Velsburg was almost painfully bright. While working in the laboratory, I received an international shipment from back home.It arrived in a state-of-the-art temperature-controlled airfreight container that had cost tens of thousands to ship. EXPEDITED and EXTREMELY FRAGILE labels covered its exterior. The courier carefully entered the access code and opened the container. As the cold vapor from the cooling system cleared, a white rose plant lay inside, roots and all.It was flawless and perfectly white. Its petals were almost translucent, as though they had been carved from frosted glass. There was not a trace of pollen. Even the thorns had been completely eliminated through an extraordinarily complex combination of targeted growth control and genetic engineering.A letter had also been tucked into a compartment inside the container.A few drops of dried blood stained the envelope, which bore Lindsay’s familiar bold, sweeping h

During my first six months in Rovenia, I thrived. The institute had some of the finest equipment in the world. There was no petty office politics, only a shared commitment to research and innovation. The project I led, Development of Hypoallergenic Alpine Plants, advanced rapidly.Using genetic material from polar moss and pollen-free ferns, I developed a remarkably resilient indoor plant that produced no known allergens.I was no longer living in someone else’s shadow.Back home, however, Lindsay was sinking fast.Without my eye for color and composition, her floral designs began to reveal how hollow and gaudy they truly were. She had always piled expensive imported blooms into her arrangements, mistaking excess and loud colors for luxury.Time after time, I had stripped her designs back with cool-toned greenery, bare branches, and carefully placed negative space. That was what restrained their new-money gaudiness and gave them the sophisticated polish people mistook for coutu

After more than ten hours in the air, I finally arrived at the studio apartment the institute had arranged for me.I took a hot shower and changed into a pair of soft cotton pajamas. After setting up the new phone number provided by the institute, I logged into an old backup work email account to check for the project materials my advisor was sending. The moment my inbox loaded, an email from back home appeared. It was from Lindsay. There was no greeting in the subject line, only a blunt two-word command.[Call me.]I stared at it for a moment. Then, I deleted it and went back to unpacking. Five minutes later, a WhatsApp call came through on the account still linked to my old number. It was Alec.I answered and held the phone to my ear, waiting for the caller to speak first.“Ivan, what are you playing at?”Lindsay’s voice came over the line, raw from a sleepless night and edged with barely contained anger.A loud crash came from the background, as though something heavy
