Chapter 2

Penulis: Perfect Timing
Miles' tone carried a hint of mockery. "Drop the act. Even if he gives you the payment details, can you even afford it?"

"Jasmine, even if you've been selling Miles' gifts from time to time, it still wouldn't add up to a million dollars."

I turned. Elena's face was tight with worry. "Please don't blow half your life savings just because you're upset!"

Miles' friends looked at me with obvious disdain. "Did you know about that, Miles? You put so much thought into every gift you gave her, yet she actually had the nerve to sell them behind your back!"

Miles' expression darkened further. "What do you take me for, Jasmine?"

I shrugged. "I've never sold anything you gave me."

He clearly didn't believe me. "Elena is your best friend. Why would she slander you out of the blue?"

Elena was my best friend. We had known each other since we were kids.

Then, I lived abroad with my parents for more than a decade. When I returned five years ago and reconnected with her, I realized I didn't really know her at all anymore.

I checked the time. I didn't want to drag this out any longer. This farce had gone on long enough.

"Whatever floats your boat." I turned to leave. "My parents have waited long enough. I'm leaving."

Miles assumed I had given in. He spoke to me like he was doing me a favor. "Out of respect for your parents, I'll let you head downstairs first. We'll proceed with the wedding after I calm Elena down. After the ceremony, I want you to apologize to Elena properly."

Ignoring him, I walked straight toward the elevator. When I arrived on the first floor, I found my parents waiting anxiously in the lounge.

"Dad, Mom," I called out solemnly. "The wedding is canceled. Let's go."

Even though I tried my best to hold it together, my throat still tightened, and a dull ache spread through my chest. I had always been emotional around my parents.

The man I had spoken so highly of to them countless times ended up disappointing me in the worst way. Without saying a word, my mother helped me out of my wedding gown.

An hour later, I arrived at the place Miles and I shared, and my phone began to vibrate nonstop. Miles' name kept flashing across the screen. So, I set my phone to Do Not Disturb.

Ten minutes later, he burst through the door, anger written all over his face. Elena followed right behind him.

"I was upstairs cleaning up the mess you made, Jasmine. I was only an hour late. I can't believe you actually left!" he growled, the vein on his temple throbbing. "I'm about to sign a major deal with IS Global Group. How dare you embarrass me at a time like this? Believe it or not, I'll dump your ass right now!"

I zipped up my suitcase and responded calmly, "I thought we had already broken up. Did you just realize that right now?"

Elena hurriedly stepped forward, her eyes wide with innocence and earnestness. "Please don't say that, Jasmine. It's all my fault, okay? I'll apologize. I'll take the blame.

"I'll do anything to make you forgive me! Please don't fight with Miles, okay? His reputation is really important right now."

I had watched her put on this act for five long years. Whenever there was a man around, she would always become the picture of understanding and innocence. Even I sometimes fell for it.

Miles immediately pulled her behind him. "You're not the one who should apologize. You've always looked out for her, and she can't do even a fraction of what you've done.

"Jasmine, if you're dead set on breaking up with me, compensate me for the ceremony first!"

His ice-cold gaze landed on me, waiting for me to make a fool of myself. I picked up my phone, unlocked it, and pulled up the payment confirmation.

I'd already paid a million dollars in full.

His eyes widened for a split second before he sneered, "Wow, you really came prepared. That screenshot almost looks real."

He glanced at the suitcase on the floor. "I know you're only acting out because you want my attention, and you want to feel important. You're packing your bags for our honeymoon, right?

"I'll give you one last chance. You don't have to pay for the wedding anymore. Come back to the hotel with me and go through the ceremony. I'll even take you to the partnership conference next month so you can enjoy the spotlight."

I shifted my gaze to the jewelry box on the vanity. I had no intention of taking any of those beautiful pearls and gemstones with me. Since his heart wasn't in it anymore, those gifts were nothing more than cold stones.

The wedding he used as leverage, and the rewards he dangled right in front of me as though he was doing me a favor—I didn't want any of it anymore.

"I'm not going through with the wedding, and that's final." I crouched down and continued packing my belongings.

"You're unbelievable!" Miles pointed right at my nose. He was so livid that he was at a total loss for words.

"Is that so?" Elena fired back without the slightest hint of hesitation. "If you're blaming the first night on that aphrodisiac, what about the second, the third, and the fourth night? Did it stay in your system forever?"The men gaped at her. "So, you actually cheated during that fake honeymoon? We thought you two were just taking photos to piss Jasmine off. We even helped by leaving comments!""Elena, you're Jasmine's best friend and her bridesmaid. How could you…"Realizing the shift in their tone, she realized she'd put her foot in her mouth. "They weren't legally married. So long as they didn't register their marriage, they can date whoever they want," she mumbled before pouting. Miles' friends and the onlookers looked at her with disdain. Then, Miles' childhood friend looked at Miles in exasperation. "How could you do something like this, Miles? You knocked Elena up, yet you still came to propose to Jasmine?"Miles lowered his head. "I don't want that child, nor do I

The last time Miles proposed, it hardly felt like a real proposal. It happened only because I accompanied him to his childhood friend's wedding. While watching the couple exchange vows, he said, "We should settle down too." I had taken those words to heart and threw myself into planning our wedding.Looking back, I realized I had been too inexperienced. Our relationship had never been tested, yet I blindly believed everything would naturally work out. I looked down at him without the slightest ripple in my heart. "I need to clarify something, Mr. Lawson. I wasn't getting back at you. I was simply handling a breach of contract terms."He stubbornly held the ring up to me. "Elena and I were just putting on an act. You're the only one I ever wanted to marry!"I shook my head and took another step back. "Is sleeping with her also part of your act, Miles?"I pulled up a photo on my phone, one I hadn't shown the media. It was another picture from Elena's honeymoon diary. In the c

Before long, rumors about Lawson Group spread through the business world like wildfire. Miles' name dominated the headlines of financial news every day, each title more jarring than the last—"Successor Caught Cheating Right After Wedding, Lawson Group's Takes a Hard Hit", and "Billion-Dollar Collaboration Canceled Amid Lawson Group's Integrity Crisis, Company Faces Heavy Penalties" among them.…I sat in my office, calmly flipping through each report. My assistant updated me on Lawson Group's compensation negotiations. Their board of directors had held an emergency meeting overnight. Miles' peers within his family raised serious doubts about his capability. To show how seriously Lawson Group took this matter, they halted all the projects under his leadership."Ms. Hansen, they've expressed that they're willing to show their utmost sincerity. They'll pay the full compensation and hope you'll reconsider working with them. Mr. Lawson has been contacting me every day, wanting to

At some point, Elena had followed me out. She had that overly friendly smile, as if nothing had ever happened between us."Jasmine," she chirped, "you really played this close to the chest. Look how messy things are now. Since you don't want Miles anymore, why don't you let me have him?"I continued on my way. "Miles isn't some object you can pass around.""He may not matter to you, but to me, he's a pretty good catch." She inched closer to me and asked tentatively, "Ms. Hansen, I helped you end that ill-matched marriage. In return, can you give me a little boost? If you can make it to Deputy CEO, I can land a position as a general manager." We had gone our own ways when we were still young, so she knew nothing about my family background. My parents had established IS Global Group overseas and gradually expanded it into what it was today. I had relied on them, but my position wasn't handed to me on a silver platter.Precisely because I was their daughter, they pushed me harder

I walked around Miles, who was frozen in place, and angled my phone at the camera on stage. The images I had saved beforehand appeared on the giant display.Elena and Miles were having the time of their lives in Kalana. They had splashed around together in the pool, shared a plate of food, and watched the sunrise from an ocean-view suite."Mr. Lawson, can you stand by your statement that the bride you presented to the media is the same person who accompanied you on your honeymoon?"The reporters went wild. Flash after flash burst across the room, every camera locked on Miles. "Mr. Lawson, could you explain yourself? Is that true?""Why did you lie?"I tucked my phone away and motioned for my secretary to bring the documents over. "As stated in Clause 17, Lawson Group must compensate IS Global Group ten million dollars for breach of contract." Miles' gaze hardened as a film of sweat began to form at his temple. Ten million dollars wasn't much for Lawson Group, but the real dama

Miles turned and stared at my secretary. "Are you sure you didn't mix her up with someone else, Ms. Patton? How could she possibly be your Deputy CEO? The letter of intent stated that the executive in charge of signing is a foreign Deputy CEO with an Aelish name!"Elena giggled into her hand and covered for me. "Jasmine's just too eager to prove herself, Miles. Being a corporate executive has always been her dream. She's just playing pretend."Then, she reached out and tried to pull me away. "Let's get off the stage first, Jasmine. Don't get in their way, okay?""The letter of intent is correct." Ignoring her, I calmly took out my passport and flipped it open to reveal my Aelish name. "I only use my Hanic name when I'm here. It's only natural that you weren't aware."Elena went from shocked to angry in seconds. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she choked out, "Jasmine! I'm your best friend. I can't believe you had such a high standing, and you hid it from me for so long! What did
