Chapter 2

Author: Muggle
"I meant to tell you," Sabrina added. "Then things got busy and I forgot."

I said nothing. I just looked at her.

After five years of marriage, I knew that expression. Whenever Sabrina felt guilty, she touched her nose without realizing it.

But with so many people watching, I held my questions.

Mom had already taken the luggage out of our trunk. She wore a new dress, one she'd bought just yesterday for this trip. Before we left, she'd asked me twice if the pattern was too bright.

I took her suitcase. "Come on. Let's get you settled."

My first priority was showing my parents their room.

But when I opened the ground-floor bedroom on the east side, I stopped.

Two children's jackets lay on the bed. An open suitcase sprawled across the floor. Half-eaten chips and juice cartons covered the desk.

Kendra's younger daughter was stretched out on the mattress playing with a tablet.

"Hi, Uncle Nolan," she said.

I didn't answer.

Kendra came up behind me. "What's wrong?"

"You're staying in this room?"

"Of course. There are four of us, and it's the biggest. Perfect fit."

I took a breath. "I saved this room for my parents."

Her smile thinned.

Before she could reply, Diane appeared.

"Just a bedroom," she said. "Kendra has two kids. It's easier for them to have the bigger one. Your parents are only two people. What difference does it make where they sleep?"

Mom tugged my sleeve at once. "It's fine. We'll take another room."

That was always her first instinct: make sure she wasn't causing trouble for me.

I led her upstairs without a word.

The second room was occupied. So was the third.

Then I stopped in the hallway and counted again.

Six bedrooms.

One for Sabrina and me. One for her parents. One for Kendra's family. One for Brady's. One for Aunt Carol's family. One for Aunt Joyce and her husband.

Exactly six.

Where were my parents supposed to go?

I turned around. Sabrina stood by the stairs, and the look on her face told me she knew I'd figured it out.

"Where are my parents sleeping?"

* * *

She hesitated. "Well... we figured people could share. The kids can sleep with the adults. We should be able to make it work."

I gave a humorless laugh. "Share how? Tell me exactly who's sharing with whom."

No one answered.

Below us, meat hissed on the grill while children screamed in delight.

Sabrina's gaze swept past me and settled on my parents.

"How about this?" she said. "Your mom and dad are only two people, so they're easier to accommodate. There are hotels in town. I could book them a room there."

The hallway went silent.

Mom blinked, then immediately waved her hands. "Of course. That's fine."

Afraid I might argue, she bent to grab her suitcase.

"A hotel is just as good. We can sleep anywhere."

Dad didn't say a word. He lowered his eyes and reached for the other suitcase.

On the drive here, he'd asked, "Does the lodge have a little courtyard? Could we sit outside and drink tea in the evening?"

I'd told him yes. He wouldn't need to worry about anything for four days. All he had to do was enjoy himself.

Now he hadn't even made it through a bedroom door.

I forced down my anger.

"Dad. Leave the suitcase for a minute."

Then I faced Sabrina. "Why my parents?"

"What?"

"Your parents are two people, too. Why aren't they the ones staying in town?"

Diane's face darkened. "Nolan, what are you implying? How could we leave?"

"Why couldn't you?"

She answered without hesitation. "All these relatives came because of us. What would it look like if the hosts went off to a hotel?"

I almost laughed in disbelief.

"The hosts?"

I repeated the words slowly.

For a moment she seemed to realize what she'd said. But with everyone listening, she refused to take it back.

"If there aren't enough rooms, somebody has to go," Dad said. "It could have been anyone."He lifted his eyes to mine."But afterward, I figured something out. She hadn't made that choice when we got there. She'd decided in advance that I'd be the one to leave."My throat tightened so suddenly it hurt.Dad went on. "She knew we wouldn't cause trouble. That's why she chose us. That isn't about bedrooms anymore."Mom's paring knife stopped moving. We sat in silence for a long time. Finally, she lowered her head. "You're right."A little later, she handed me the peeled apple."Nolan, I've spent years telling you that marriage means learning to put up with things. Maybe I was wrong. You put up with something once, and people expect you to do it again. Keep doing it, and eventually they think you owe it to them."Tears spilled down my cheeks.Mom quickly reached over to wipe them away."What's all this crying for?" she said gently. "Whether you divorce her is your choice. Don't

Sabrina frowned. "Haven't we already been over this?""Tell me again.""Because I knew you'd say no.""Then why did you assume I'd agree once they got there?"She rubbed her forehead impatiently."Nolan, do you have to obsess over every tiny detail?""Answer me."She stared at me for a long time before finally speaking."Because that's what you've always done."I went still. She kept talking."Which family we visit for Christmas. What gifts we buy for our parents. My sister's kids coming to stay. Mom needing a last-minute favor. You might complain at first, but you always give in eventually. And your parents..."She stopped herself."My parents what?"After a pause, she said, "They aren't the type to fight people over things."The room was so quiet I could hear my own breathing.I looked at the woman I'd shared a bed with for five years and realized I might never have known her at all."So you knew."She blinked. "Knew what?""You knew I didn't want it. You knew I'd

"Isn't that exactly what happened?"Diane's face changed."You—""Enough, Mom," Kendra interrupted. She sounded as fed up as I felt."Sabrina was the one who promised everything would be covered. Now she's acting like we came here to take advantage of her."Brady spoke up, too. "Sabrina, if you'd told us from the start that we were splitting costs, we'd have planned a different trip."Sabrina's expression darkened."That's enough."She turned on me."Are you really going to act like none of this is your responsibility? Didn't we rent this lodge together? Wasn't that $8,500 our money?""Yes," I said. She looked as if she'd won."Exactly. So what's the real difference if I let my family join us?""There's a very big difference."I held her gaze."Shared marital money is shared property. It isn't your personal fund for impressing relatives."The room went still.I spoke slowly, making every word count."We talked about spending $8,500. We decided to take both sets of pa

Kendra was angrier than ever.[Mom, now we're the ones being unreasonable? Who promised us we wouldn't have to worry about a thing?]The group chat went tense. At last Sabrina snapped.[Did none of you bring money on vacation?]The entire chat fell silent.I stared at those words, then laughed aloud.Mom leaned over. "What's so funny?""Nothing. Just a pretty good joke."Before she could ask more, Diane called. For the first time, I didn't answer immediately. I let it ring out. When she called a second time, I picked up."Nolan." She sounded as though she were struggling to contain her anger. "How long are you going to keep this up?""Keep what up?""You haven't come back for two days, and now Sabrina has to pay for everybody's meals and outings herself. She's your wife! Isn't her money your family's money?"I smiled. "It is. And?"She hesitated, evidently caught off guard."Then why do you two need to keep your finances so separate? You earn more than Sabrina. What's w

I stared at Sabrina's message until my chest felt tight. Then I read the next one.[Once everyone arrives, it's not like he can actually throw them out.]And the one after that.[His parents are easygoing. If there aren't enough bedrooms, they can stay at a hotel in town for a couple of nights.]I must have stood there for ages. Mom called my name twice before I heard her."Nolan? What's wrong?"I looked up. "Nothing."Another message arrived from Aunt Carol.[I only found out today that you knew nothing about this. Sabrina kept saying she'd already discussed it with you. If we'd known the truth, we never would have shown up like that.]I couldn't think of an answer. So it hadn't been a last-minute solution she'd invented after realizing there weren't enough rooms. Days ago, Sabrina had already decided my parents would be sent away.It wasn't an unforeseen shortage. The instant she invited the fourth additional family, she knew exactly who would lose their room. She'd even

"This one charges 50 dollars," Dad added. "We can skip that."I leaned against the doorway. "Dad. Are you on vacation, or are you preparing a budget report?"He looked sheepish. "No sense wasting money."Mom laughed. "He's been researching since last night. I thought his phone would die before he finished."I walked over and took the phone from him."I'm in charge today. You two just enjoy yourselves."He grumbled that I'd spend too much, but he was the fastest one to get dressed. We'd barely left the hotel when a dozen new messages lit up our extended-family group chat—Sabrina's side of the family. I almost never spoke there, but it was lively that morning.Kendra posted a picture of a twenty-seat passenger van.[We're off!]Her relatives showered the message with likes.Aunt Joyce wrote: [Sabrina always thinks of everything.]Diane added: [A vacation is about having fun. Don't worry about money!]I stared at that last message. The irony was almost impressive. Not five m
