Chapter 2 Calling for Help

Autor: Goodtale
Everyone froze in place. Lawrence slowly turned around, his gaze cold. "Do you have any idea what will happen to the family if you give birth to that child?"

He enunciated every word as if he was reading a diagnosis out loud. "Have you ever considered how he will live?"

I felt a tightness in my chest, finding it absurd.

In my previous life, I never could figure out if he sent me into this procedure because he bought into the fake report, or because Tiffany said she didn't want him to have children.

Now he was here, calm, collected, and nauseatingly rational.

Tiffany huddled closer and nearly knelt before me. She sounded soft and urgent. "He's doing it for your own good. Think about the people's stares if the child is born. You can't ruin him just because of your obsession over being a mother."

She got agitated, and her eyes turned red. "I've seen a lot of these cases here. All those families were destroyed in the end."

The nurses quickly nodded.

I pushed myself up using the edge of the bed, then said clearly, "I will give birth to this child, even if the whole world stops me."

Lawrence closed his eyes, as if he was tolerating an unreasonable soul. "You're too unstable to make any decisions." He turned to the nurses. "Get her into an observatory ward, and we'll talk when she comes down."

I stood up. "You're imprisoning me?"

He looked at me, his eyes tired. "This is for your protection. And the child's."

He made it sound so noble. This was what happened in my previous life. I was imprisoned in this hospital with no way out. When they eventually shoved me into the ER, I didn't even have the strength to fight back.

The nurses clamped my arms. "Don't make this harder for us, Mrs. Shaw."

Tiffany was still keeping up her act. "Get some rest, Melody. Don't hurt the baby. We'll talk once you've thought this through."

The door closed, and I heard the lock click. I sat on the bed, my body shivering. Before half an hour was up, hurried footsteps echoed in the corridor.

Someone shoved the door open, and Lawrence's mother barged into the room and slammed her bag onto the table. "Are you mad, Melody?"

Leonard, her husband, stood behind her, looking dark.

"What did our family do to you? You're going to give birth to that freak and have the whole city laugh at us?" Miranda slapped the table and jabbed a finger at my face. "If you're not aborting that baby, you're never joining us as family again! Lawrence is still young! He shouldn't be shackled to a fool like you for life!"

I looked at her and slowly smiled. "I'm the baby's mother. I get to decide whether he comes to this world."

Miranda's face twisted with rage. "You're unreasonable! Tiffany's kind enough to talk to you, but you spat in her hand instead! You just want to see our family burn!"

Tiffany was standing at the entrance, her eyes red. "Calm down, Mrs. Shaw. She probably can't accept this. We'll talk her out of it."

There were nurses outside the door, watching the drama. "That's the girl who wants to keep that freak baby."

"She must be out of her mind."

"She should be honored she married into the Shaws. This is just being ungrateful."

"Poor Dr. Samson, having to deal with her."

I heard everything. These people were on her side, deciding whether my child should live. I closed my eyes, my mind whirring. I couldn't tell them about the report. Tiffany's father invested in this hospital, so this was her family's turf.

I had no proof she doctored the report. If I exposed it, that would just alert them. Either way, I had to wait for an opportunity, an opening that could destroy her completely.

Now, I needed to find a way out.

I went to the window and looked down, realizing I was on the third floor. My child moved. I clutched my belly, and my eyes stung. Tears nearly fell, but I mustn't cry, or that would mean defeat.

My parents were overseas, so only that person could save me.

I quickly dialed a number, and the call went through almost immediately.

A moment of silence later, a voice said quietly, "Melody?"

I felt a lump in my throat, and I nearly hissed, "I want to leave this hospital. Pick me up, but make sure no one sees you."

Lawrence still came in the end. He stood below my apartment, wearing an old, gray jacket, and he was barely thicker than a stick. He didn't come upstairs, but he looked at my balcony the whole afternoon. I stepped back from the window and pulled the curtains shut.He had someone send me a letter. I didn't open it. The second came, and then the third, but I sent them back. He stopped writing letters and asked someone to give me a message. "Name the child."I stood in the kitchen, holding a ladle, and I froze. That night, I took out the ultrasound photo and wrote a name on the back page. Nathaniel Ginger. That was the name I gave it. He'd take my name.I tucked the photo deeply in my drawer and let no one see it.Tiffany went insane in prison. It started out as crying episodes, then she cried the whole night, and eventually, it got to her cellmates. The cops brought Tiffany into the courthouse during the day of the trial. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones jutted out, and her eyes were sunken. Her long, silky hair was cut short and pushed behind her ears haphazardly.A yellow shirt hung on her body, looking oversized. Her wrist was covered in bandages, covering up the marks of her self-harm. She saw me the moment she came in, and her eyes were filled with gleaming venom, just like a viper's.I didn't avert my gaze. The prosecutor's evidence was cruelly, totally complete. The snapshots of the switched reports, the transaction history, the fingerprints on the syringe, and the voice recording were laid out.Tiffany's legal team tried to lessen her sentence, citing extreme actions due to romantic entanglement, but the prosecutor shut them down."Her action was premeditated, planned, and she had accomplices. Two IT guys doctored the evidence after Tiffany bribed them with eighty grand. That oxytocin was something she took from the drug storage privately, and the dosage was far higher than the safe levels. That caused my premature labor and excessive bleeding. The day her arrest was ratified, reporters from dozens of outlets surrounded the hospital's entrance. The Department of Health held a press conference along with the hospital and told the public about the investigation results. The Internet cursed Tiffany to high hells and back the same afternoon her case was reported. Her alternate accounts were combed, and every single post that showed off her life became evidence.Someone in the comments posted a story she shared three years ago. She hugged me tight, refusing to let me go.The only thing she kept saying was, "This is my fault. I should never have let you ma

He stared at the papers with bloodshot eyes, then slowly took them and signed his name, but every stroke took everything he had. Then, he raised his head and asked, "Was the baby really healthy?"I said nothing, whereas Bernard spoke up. "The report's right here. Want to take a look?"Lawrence didn't. He closed his eyes and knocked his forehead against the edge of the bed. It let out a dull thud. "I'm sorry."I said nothing. When Tiffany was taken by the cops, her shouts echoed across the corridor. She called out for Lawrence.Lawrence went out and stood at the entrance, watching two lady officers dragging her out by the arms."I love you, Lawrence, I really do! I've done so much for you! You can't just do nothing!"He looked at her with ice-cold ferocity. "You killed my son," he said, his voice flat. "You can never clear that debt."Something choked Tiffany, and she stopped shouting, but she kept crying until her snot was covering her face.Lawrence left and didn't turn back

Tiffany stepped backward until her back was leaning against the wall. "Lawrence, I…""Tell me if you switched out the report!" Lawrence roared enough for the corridor to shake. He grabbed Tiffany by the collar and lifted her off the ground. "I trusted you! You told me the baby was unhealthy! You told me it was better for Melody if he was aborted! I signed the papers! I shoved her into it myself, and now you tell me the baby was healthy all this while?"She was wheezing from crying too hard. "I did it for you! I don't want you to have any children! I can't take it every time I see you treating her like a queen! I've loved you for so many years! She came after me, so why did she get to bear your child while I don't? What part of her is better than me?"Lawrence's grip loosened, and he staggered backward. Then, he remembered something and charged at me. Bernard blocked him, and he flew into a rage. "Out of my way!"I closed my eyes, refusing to look at him. Bernard told his guards

It was Bernard Foster. He stood at the entrance dressed in a black suit, his expression was cold. Behind him were the hospital's internal oversight team, the enforcers from the Department of Health, and a dozen guards. Everyone had recording devices on them.Tiffany's scalpel stopped inches away from my belly. "What are you doing?" She stepped backward, scalpel still in hand. "This is the operating room! You can't come in here!"Bernard didn't look at her. His eyes went across the crowd and fell on me. I was half-unconscious, my lips were white as paper, and blood covered my whole body. He strode into the operating room and shoved a nurse out of his way, then slammed a document on the table. "Melody's authorization papers, and it's notarized. I'll handle all her medical affairs." His voice wasn't loud, but it silenced everyone. "I demand a change of medical team. Everyone here must leave."Lawrence squeezed in, his coat still drenched in sweat. His expression changed when he s
