Chapter 3 Dragged Deeper

Author: Goodtale
After I left the hospital, I went to a private hospital and accessed the VIP passage. I had my blood drawn, then got an ultrasound and amniocentesis done.

The doctor looked at the screen and adjusted his glasses. "The baby's growing healthily, and all vitals are normal."

I clenched the report, my knuckles going white. "Can you tell me if it's a boy or a girl?"

The doctor looked at me. "It's a beautiful baby boy."

The consultation room closed behind me. I slid down the ground and buried my face in my arms, and my shoulders shivered furiously.

In my previous life, I signed him away, and now, I had the truth in my hands. I snapped photos of the report and hid the original in my shirt's interlayer, then uploaded the photos to the cloud drive and saved it in an email only I knew.

After that, I texted Lawrence. "I just left the hospital, and I'm coming home."

The foyer's light was still on, and Lawrence was already in the living room. He was on the couch, still in his coat, and in his hands was a file. Behind him stood Tiffany.

"You're finally back." She approached me, her eyes red again. "Lawrence and I have been looking for you the whole afternoon. We were worried sick."

I went around her and stared at Lawrence. "Why were you looking for me? Worried I might run away?"

Lawrence raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, and he didn't look good at all. "Where have you been?"

I said nothing. He tossed the file onto the coffee table. "The baby's worse than we thought."

I froze.

"It's a new genetic test result. The NTD Risk is four percent higher than last time." He looked at me and spoke as if he was reading a diagnosis out aloud. "The longer we drag this out, the worse it is for your body."

Tiffany was beside him. She said quietly, "This isn't the time to throw a tantrum, Tiffany. The data doesn't lie."

I picked up the file and pulled the report out. It was the same thing they showed me in my previous life.

I looked at Tiffany. "I want a recheck."

Her eyes darted away, and the smile on her face stiffened. "It's a very reputable report. Doing it again is just wasting time."

I looked at her coldly. "I don't trust anything made by your hospital. I want to get another independent agency to do the test."

Lawrence frowned. "You don't trust our hospital?"

"It's her I don't trust." I pointed at Tiffany.

Tiffany looked like she was hurt, and she started crying. "How could you say that about me? I did so much for you and even arranged everything."

She made herself sound hurt, and her shoulders shivered. "Lawrence, does she think I'm a bad person or something?"

Lawrence looked at me and coldly said, "She's been keeping up with your case and knows every report more than you do. If you change hospitals, you'll be denying her whole career."

"Yes," I said. "That's what I'm doing."

She cried harder.

Under Lawrence's so-called negotiation, I was forced to make the check at the test center Tiffany wanted. The day the result came out, I stared at the report, and my heart sank. It was wrong. This was the same report they showed me. I clenched the paper, my hands shivering furiously.

It wasn't out of fear, but of hatred. She'd bought that test center out.

Tiffany was right beside me, and she sighed. "Do you trust me now, Tiffany?"

Lawrence took the report from her and read through it, then he looked at me. There was a slight sorrow in his eyes, but it only lasted for a moment. "I've arranged the procedure."

My head jerked up. "I won't do it! I'll carry the baby to term even if it's the last thing I do, Lawrence!"

He closed his eyes, sounding exhausted. "You're ill, Melody. You've been ill since you had second thoughts about the procedure. Your emotions are getting in the way of your decision-making skills. I'm your husband, and I can't watch you ruin yourself."

I stepped back. "What do you want to do?"

He didn't look at me. Instead, he turned toward the door and ordered, "Come in."

Two male caretakers came in and stood beside me. Lawrence said, "Take her home. She needs some rest."

I thrashed and struggled. "You're mad, Lawrence! I want a divorce!"

He turned back and spoke with a voice that sounded like it came from a far, far away place. "We'll talk once you calm down."

Lawrence still came in the end. He stood below my apartment, wearing an old, gray jacket, and he was barely thicker than a stick. He didn't come upstairs, but he looked at my balcony the whole afternoon. I stepped back from the window and pulled the curtains shut.He had someone send me a letter. I didn't open it. The second came, and then the third, but I sent them back. He stopped writing letters and asked someone to give me a message. "Name the child."I stood in the kitchen, holding a ladle, and I froze. That night, I took out the ultrasound photo and wrote a name on the back page. Nathaniel Ginger. That was the name I gave it. He'd take my name.I tucked the photo deeply in my drawer and let no one see it.Tiffany went insane in prison. The cops brought Tiffany into the courthouse during the day of the trial. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones jutted out, and her eyes were sunken. Her long, silky hair was cut short and pushed behind her ears haphazardly.A yellow shirt hung on her body, looking oversized. Her wrist was covered in bandages, covering up the marks of her self-harm. She saw me the moment she came in, and her eyes were filled with gleaming venom, just like a viper's.I didn't avert my gaze. The prosecutor's evidence was cruelly, totally complete. The snapshots of the switched reports, the transaction history, the fingerprints on the syringe, and the voice recording were laid out.Tiffany's legal team tried to lessen her sentence, citing extreme actions due to romantic entanglement, but the prosecutor shut them down."Her action was premeditated, planned, and she had accomplices. Two IT guys doctored the evidence after Tiffany bribed them with eighty grand. That oxytocin was something she took from the drug storage privately, and the dosage was far higher than the safe levels. That caused my premature labor and excessive bleeding. The day her arrest was ratified, reporters from dozens of outlets surrounded the hospital's entrance. The Department of Health held a press conference along with the hospital and told the public about the investigation results. The Internet cursed Tiffany to high hells and back the same afternoon her case was reported. He stared at the papers with bloodshot eyes, then slowly took them and signed his name, but every stroke took everything he had. Then, he raised his head and asked, "Was the baby really healthy?"I said nothing, whereas Bernard spoke up. "The report's right here. Want to take a look?"Lawrence didn't. He closed his eyes and knocked his forehead against the edge of the bed. It let out a dull thud. "I'm sorry."I said nothing. When Tiffany was taken by the cops, her shouts echoed across the corridor. She called out for Lawrence.Lawrence went out and stood at the entrance, watching two lady officers dragging her out by the arms."I love you, Lawrence, I really do! I've done so much for you! You can't just do nothing!"He looked at her with ice-cold ferocity. "You killed my son," he said, his voice flat. "You can never clear that debt."Something choked Tiffany, and she stopped shouting, but she kept crying until her snot was covering her face.Lawrence left and didn't turn back

Tiffany stepped backward until her back was leaning against the wall. "Lawrence, I…""Tell me if you switched out the report!" Lawrence roared enough for the corridor to shake. He grabbed Tiffany by the collar and lifted her off the ground. "I trusted you! You told me the baby was unhealthy! You told me it was better for Melody if he was aborted! I signed the papers! I shoved her into it myself, and now you tell me the baby was healthy all this while?"She was wheezing from crying too hard. "I did it for you! I don't want you to have any children! I can't take it every time I see you treating her like a queen! I've loved you for so many years! She came after me, so why did she get to bear your child while I don't? What part of her is better than me?"Lawrence's grip loosened, and he staggered backward. Then, he remembered something and charged at me. Bernard blocked him, and he flew into a rage. "Out of my way!"I closed my eyes, refusing to look at him. Bernard told his guards

  • She Lied About My Baby   Chapter 5 The Truth Out

It was Bernard Foster. He stood at the entrance dressed in a black suit, his expression was cold. Behind him were the hospital's internal oversight team, the enforcers from the Department of Health, and a dozen guards. Everyone had recording devices on them.Tiffany's scalpel stopped inches away from my belly. "What are you doing?" She stepped backward, scalpel still in hand. "This is the operating room! You can't come in here!"Bernard didn't look at her. His eyes went across the crowd and fell on me. I was half-unconscious, my lips were white as paper, and blood covered my whole body. He strode into the operating room and shoved a nurse out of his way, then slammed a document on the table. "Melody's authorization papers, and it's notarized. I'll handle all her medical affairs." His voice wasn't loud, but it silenced everyone. "I demand a change of medical team. Everyone here must leave."Lawrence squeezed in, his coat still drenched in sweat. His expression changed when he s
