Chapter 2

Penulis: Beef Burger Lover
"No matter how much you look down on me, are you really just going to watch me die right in front of you?" I said threateningly.

Hearing that, Edward finally stopped in his tracks.

A moment later, his impatient voice came from outside the door. "I'll call Ms. Smith right now. But if she doesn't let you out, that's none of my business."

I nodded frantically and leaned against the door, waiting for Edward to make the call.

"Ms. Smith, Mr. Kastel says he keeps throwing up blood. Should I take him to the hospital?"

Rosalie had just finished ordering their meal when she received Edward's call. Annoyance colored her expression, and she snapped coldly, "Edward, are you sick of your job? I told you to watch over Xander, not plead on his behalf!"

Edward's expression darkened from the scolding, and he shot a glare at the basement door.

Suddenly, he saw blood seeping out through the crack beneath the door. In that instant, all color drained from his face.

His voice trembled as he shouted, "Blood… Blood! Ms. Smith, I think Mr. Kastel was telling the truth! He really is coughing up blood! There's so much blood coming out from under the door!"

Hearing this, Rosalie's hand holding the phone froze. She remained silent briefly, then hesitated before saying, "Wait for me—"

In my haze, I heard Logan's childish voice coming through the phone, cutting off the rest of Rosalie's words, along with the hope I was holding onto.

"Mommy, I want ice cream."

Rosalie turned to look behind her.

Caleb was holding Logan's hand and looking at her with a gaze full of affection. "Rosie, is it Xander?" he asked.

He added, "It's Lolo's birthday today. Is Xander upset that you're celebrating his birthday? Is he deliberately making excuses to get you to go back, just like last time, when he wouldn't let you attend Lolo's parent-teacher conference?

"It's all my fault. If only Lolo hadn't resembled how you looked when you were young, then I wouldn't have insisted on you adopting him just because I couldn't bear to leave him suffering in the orphanage.

"I just didn't want him to be mocked at school for having a birth mother who abandoned him."

Upon seeing Caleb's sorrowful and self-reproaching expression, Rosalie felt her heart twinge slightly.

Logan stepped forward and threw himself into Rosalie's arms. He looked up at her and said softly, "Mommy, stay and celebrate my birthday with me, okay? This is the first time I've ever celebrated a birthday with you.

"For the past few years, it was always just Daddy and me. Everyone always made fun of me for not having a mother."

At that, Rosalie bent down and hugged Logan tightly. She then looked at Caleb, her eyes full of heartache.

"I promised I would spend your birthday with you, and I will keep that promise. Today, no matter what happens, nothing is more important than celebrating your birthday," she said to Logan.

Caleb's frown eased, and a smile bloomed on his face. "Thank you, Rosie."

On the other hand, Edward had been standing outside the door, not daring to say another word.

As I listened to Rosalie's voice coming from the other end of the phone, my last bit of strength gave out. I slowly slumped down against the door and collapsed to the floor.

Before I closed my eyes, I heard Rosalie's final words to Edward.

"Edward, I don't have time to come back. I'll call Dr. Moyer later and have him come to the house to check on Xander.

"Xander has a habit of lying. When Dr. Moyer arrives, follow his orders to the letter. I forbid you from letting Xander out on your own. Keep a watchful eye on him. If this messes with Logan's birthday, I'm coming after you!"

I had a habit of lying, huh?

Just before I lost consciousness, tears slipped from my tightly shut eyes.

So this was how Rosalie saw me. She didn't have a shred of trust in me at all.

Back then, on the day of Logan's parent-teacher conference, I had indeed called her while she was on her way to the school.

But that was because the product trial I'd been working on at the company was a success, and I wanted to share the good news with her as soon as I could.

As I listened to Rosalie's speech, an icy chill spread through my entire body. I stepped backward, inch by inch.Rosalie held onto my arm, continuing her docile act as she said, "Don't worry. I've liquidated all the company's assets and changed my identity. No one knows who we are in this unfamiliar country. We can go back to the life we had before."I could feel nausea and disgust rise up my throat. Swallowing back the revulsion, I forced out, "We can't go back to how it was before, Rosalie. "From the moment you hid from me that you were bringing Caleb home, from the moment you acknowledged Logan as your adopted son, our relationship was already broken!"You only blame Caleb? Do you think you bear no fault yourself? You were the one who didn't trust me and locked me in the basement! What makes you think I would ever want to go back to living like that with you?"Rosalie's eyes welled with tears when she heard what I said. She kneeled on the ground and begged, "Xan, please, forgi

One day, as I was hurrying across campus, Jessica called."Jessica, did something happen?" I asked. After going abroad and finishing up my treatment, I had started studying architecture, something I truly loved."Xan, Rosalie has become a fugitive," Jessica revealed.I stopped in my tracks, paralyzed in place after receiving the shocking news."Xan, I'm sorry. I saw how happy you've been lately, so I kept what was happening back home from you," Jessica said apologetically.I shook my head. "It's not your fault. I know you did it for my own good."Jessica continued, "A while back, Rosalie used her connections at the hospital to pull your files. I didn't stop her because I wanted her to realize what a monster she'd been. She got hold of all your treatment records and surveillance footage."After going through all of it, she threw a massive scene at the hospital before vanishing. Caleb also disappeared around the same time."A month ago, Rosalie's neighbors called the police afte

Rosalie looked up, her expression full of a desperate plea.Staring at her, Jessica said with biting coldness, "Xan said he deeply regrets ever falling in love with you. If there's a next life, he never wants to meet you. He never wants to see you again."But as his sister, I hope you remember him forever. I hope you lie awake every single night, unable to sleep. I hope that, instead of sweet memories, all you see is Xan begging you to save him. I hope you're haunted by the horrific sight of his broken body in that coffin.""Xan! I was wrong!" Rosalie's anguished cries and shouts echoed all around the hill.Peter walked up from the side, shifting his umbrella over my head. He pushed my wheelchair in the other direction, then looked down at me and meticulously laid out the next steps."The bodyguards here will handle everything. They won't let her go until it's all finished."The flight is this afternoon. We're leaving this place."I nodded, never once looking back as we left.D

Rosalie grabbed Jessica's arm, keeping her from walking away as she snapped indignantly, "Jessica, I've swallowed my pride and sucked up to all of you, so why do you still look like you want to kill me? "Does Xander really want me to drive Lolo and Caleb away, leaving them to die? Will he only be satisfied then?"The Smiths need a man who can carry himself with dignity. Hasn't he made enough of a scene yet?"Then she shouted up the hill, "Xander, stop this! If you don't come out right now, I'm really going to be angry!"Her words didn't stir up any emotion within me. Sitting in my wheelchair, I watched the figures in the distance without a word.Jessica rolled her eyes discreetly, then turned and continued upward."Weren't you just asking me who died? Hurry up, then. Any later and Xan will already be buried. You'll never see him again," she said coldly.Rosalie staggered, letting the umbrella she was holding fall from her grip as her mind descended into utter chaos. She wonder

Rosalie frowned at those words. She forced down her anger and said with displeasure, "You're just a lowly worker. I didn't ask for your opinion. Where's Xander? Tell him to come out. I came specifically to take him home."Quinn stretched her hand out to block Rosalie from stepping inside, shouting, "You're too late! Rosalie, you've come too late! You'll never see Mr. Xander again!"Rosalie was stunned by the outburst, and utter bewilderment appeared on her face. "Have you gone mad? It's not even that late, but you won't let me see Xander? Did Xander tell you to do this?"Xander! Come out!"With a sneer, Quinn shoved Rosalie out into the rain. "You want to see Mr. Xander, don't you? Come to Crestwell Cemetery tomorrow at 9:00 am. It'll be your last chance to see him."After saying that, Quinn turned and walked back inside.Rosalie tried to stop her and demand an explanation, but several bodyguards quickly surrounded her, stopping her in place.Even as he watched Rosalie get shove

"Are you telling me Jessica took Xander and left? She didn't even have anything to say to me?" Rosalie asked Clarence in disbelief.Clarence hung his head low. Large drops of sweat rolled into his eyes, but he didn't dare wipe them away.He answered cautiously, "Yes. The bodyguard blocked me, and Ms. Kastel got into the car without saying a single word."Rosalie's expression darkened, and she hurled the tulips in her hands onto the ground. In a cold voice, she ordered, "Pull the surveillance footage and trace the license plate! I want Xander found within one day!"…After being brought back home, I lay blankly staring at the ceiling. For a long time, I couldn't say a word.Unable to stop my mind from wandering, I turned to my elder brother, Peter Kastel, who was beside me. "Peter, will I be stuck lying in a hospital bed for the rest of my life?"Because my condition went untreated for too long, my cancer had progressed rapidly and spread to other parts of my body.
