Chapter 1 The Decision to Sell

Autor: Monthly Explosion
When Gwendolyn came home, I'd just listed the house with a real estate agent.

She tossed her apron onto the couch and rolled up her sleeves with a resigned sigh. "Honey, what do you want to eat? I'll make it right now."

"I already ate."

"What did you have?"

"Instant noodles."

Her brows furrowed. "Didn't I tell you to wait for me?"

I glanced at the clock on the wall. "I did for… two hours. You spent them teaching somebody else to make two hot dishes."

Gwendolyn stiffened, looking a little guilty.

"It's my fault. I tend to forget about everything else whenever I'm teaching him how to cook something. I'll make you some soup that's easy on your stomach."

I shook my head. "Don't bother."

"Why not? Didn't you say your stomach hurt yesterday?"

So, she did remember.

"I'm full. I can't drink any more."

She gave me an awkward smile and immediately started looking for my stomach medicine.

Alas, she'd forgotten that she'd taken the last of it from my suitcase and given it to Ryder Mercer, our darling neighbor across the hall.

"Ryder loves spicy food. He should keep some medicine on hand."

Yesterday, my stomach had hurt so badly that my entire body shook in agony. As I had no medication on hand to relieve the pain, I decided to call her.

The moment she answered, I heard the roar of the range hood.

"Gwendolyn, my stomach really hurts… I think my stomach's bleeding."

"Ryder, grab some ginger and garlic. Chop them up first… What did you say?"

I clenched the phone so tightly my fingers hurt. "My… My stomach hurts."

All she did was say an absentminded, "Oh."

Then, she finally seemed to register what I'd said, so she added, "Take some medicine. What do you expect me to do about it? Oh, be careful! Don't let the oil splatter on you…"

Sure enough, Ryder cried out in pain.

She immediately hung up, saying, "Remember to take your medicine. I'm busy."

And so, I was left curled up like a pillbug on the carpet.

I stared at my phone, at the button she'd used to end the call.

Then, I watched the screen dim and go black before letting out a bitter laugh.

My heart grew colder by the minute.

…

Gwendolyn messaged me two hours later. "Feeling any better? If it's really bad, I can come to you."

A bitter ache rose in my chest as my eyes grew damp.

She was in Northgate, while I was away on a business trip in Southgate. The two cities were a thousand miles apart, so there was no way she could realistically make the trip overnight.

Besides, I'd be home tomorrow. "Don't worry. I'm feeling better."

She sent me a smiling emoji. "Let me know an hour before you get home tomorrow. I'll buy groceries and make you something good."

That was her way of making peace with me.

In the years we'd been together, she'd apologize by cooking one dish after another whenever we got into a fight.

I was just about to send her a list of what I wanted when a new post popped up on my social media feed.

Ryder had uploaded several photos of someone holding his wrist while applying medicine to it. His caption read, "It feels so good to have someone care about you."

I stared at that caption for a long, long time. Then, I deleted the items from my list one by one.

I'd held on to one last shred of hope that someone would care about me today. Unfortunately, I came home to a cold stove and no food waiting for me.

"Stop looking. I've already taken my medicine."

Only then did she stop searching and plop down beside me.

"Could you go over to Ryder's in a bit and talk to him?"

"Say what?"

"Apologize. He spent the whole afternoon cooking for you, and you didn't even take a bite. You even gave him attitude on top of that. He was so angry that he nearly burst into tears…"

So… all the concern she'd shown me earlier since she walked through that door was to pad the conversation. She wanted me to apologize.

Her questions regarding my health were fake. Her offer to cook was fake. She didn't really care about my medicine, but her concern over Ryder crying? That was genuine.

My phone buzzed. It was the real estate agent.

"Mr. Cross, I happen to have a buyer lined up. If you're serious about selling, should I tell them?"

I looked up and met Gwendolyn's anxious gaze. Then, I sent back a single word. "Yes."

Several years passed after the ghosts of my past darkened my doorstep.I became the top project director at a construction company.I was giving a speech at an industry summit when I saw the lobby manager berating a server."What can you even do if you can't even bring someone the right drink? Make one more mistake, and you're fired!"I walked over with an easy smile on my lips. "Mr. Cooper, it's just a minor mix-up. No harm done.""Oh, thank you for being so understanding, Mr. Cross. We'll be more careful next time."The server repeatedly apologized with his head bowed before looking up.We both froze.Ryder's face turned deathly pale when he saw me.I glanced at him and turned to leave, but he hurried after me. "Grayson, thanks for what you did back there.""Call me Mr. Cross," I said curtly.Ryder stiffened, embarrassment written all over his face.I pulled out a tissue and handed it to him. "I only stepped in because I didn't think it was a big deal."He took the tissu

"Grayson, I used the money you transferred to me to buy a house in Bayhaven. It's near your company. The deed is in your name."Gwendolyn stood on the steps, managing a strained smile as she continued, "I hope you won't mind the size. I have nothing left now. Ryder and I… we're not together. I had an abortion. It was my fault for not handling our relationship properly."I turned to look at her. "If that's all you have to say, then let's agree to put the past behind us. We all have to move on eventually."Gwendolyn's smile froze. "But I want to be able to see you."I took out my phone and called my boss. "I've got a lot on my plate right now. Could you assign the deal I signed today to someone else? You can give them the performance bonus, too. I don't mind."My boss gave a brief reply on the other end of the line. Her expression finally changed. "You… hate me that much?""Somewhat. Honestly, I just don't want anything to do with you. So, do me a favor and don't ever tell anyone

Ryder grabbed the suitcase and yanked it toward him, but Gwendolyn's grip on it held firm as she was determined to leave. So, the suitcase struck the corner of the table, sending the photo of the three of them crashing to the floor.Three cracks split the photograph, separating me, Ryder, and Gwendolyn from one another. The living room fell deathly silent.Gwendolyn looked at the photo, her eyes dulling. She spoke as if she was explaining her actions, though it sounded more like she was talking to herself."I used to think Grayson was too driven because he would always pick his career whenever the choice was between me and his career. You were the exact opposite. "You couldn't do anything without my help. I enjoyed being needed. I enjoyed it for a long time. But now… I'm tired."She stared at the broken glass scattered across the floor, her voice growing quieter."I want a partner, a husband. Not a man-child who can't make a single decision without consulting me first. You have

The bedroom door slammed shut in Ryder's face. The following evening, Gwendolyn attended a business function. When she returned home, a faint trace of unfamiliar cologne clung to her collar.Ryder stood beside her, his expression dark.As soon as she set her phone on the table, he snatched it up and demanded, "Where were you tonight? You've been suspended from work. What business function could you possibly have attended?"Her patience wore thin as she barked, "Ryder, that's none of your business!"She snatched her phone back. "And don't take my phone again for no reason!""Why? You never used to mind.""Well, I do now."Ryder stared at her neck and followed her into the study. "Did you go to the reunion? Did you go there to see Grayson?"Gwendolyn slammed her phone down on the desk."Who do you think you are? Why do I have to report my whereabouts to you? He's my fiancé. What's wrong with me going to see him? Can you stop interrogating me every time I come home? Look at your

The man in the groom's suit wasn't Grayson at all. He was a complete stranger, someone none of them had ever met.Ryder, who was standing behind them, quietly breathed a sigh of relief. He was also the first to break the silence, asking, "Who are you?"Gwendolyn seized the man, fury blazing in her eyes. "Where's Grayson?"He grunted in pain and shook her off, snapping waspishly, "How should I know? You're the one who got herself involved with his best friend and drove him away. Yet, you're demanding answers from me? Are you serious right now?"Then, he spun around and scattered the stack of pictures he'd been hiding behind his back.Every photo showed Gwendolyn personally teaching Ryder how to cook. Others showed her holding his hand while they shopped for groceries or accompanying him to pick up and drop off his parents. The room exploded in an instant."What's going on? Did they drive Grayson away? Is this guy a stand-in groom?""If I were Grayson, I'd leave too. His own girl

My phone kept buzzing with messages from my coworkers."Grayson, Ryder went to SE and signed that contract early, pretending to act on your behalf. Your girlfriend was with him at the time.""You spent six grueling months on that project, and they just stole all your credit!""Ryder and Gwendolyn were practically joined at the hip during that time. I knew those two were doing it on the down low!"Just then, the door lock clicked.Gwendolyn walked over carrying a cola and a latte. She handed the cola to Ryder before looking down at me. "Grayson, we need to talk."I ignored the latte, zipped up my suitcase, and pulled it to my side. "About what? About how you handed my contract over to him? Or how you recommended to HR that he take over my position after I leave?"She stared at me, rendered speechless.I was almost out the door with my suitcase when she finally snapped out of it. She hurried after me, grabbed me in a fit of panic, and began explaining in a rush."Grayson, I'd b
