Chapter 2 The Buyer

Author: Monthly Explosion
I'd barely sent the message when the door chimed and the fingerprint lock clicked open.

Ryder pulled his finger away and smiled at me.

"Come on, man. Don't be mad. I'll come over and show you what I've learned in the kitchen next time you're out of town. Deal? Gwen's been making me work in the kitchen every day while you're gone. My cooking has gotten so much better!"

He was still smiling, but I could tell that he was also making a point.

He was telling me that he'd had his fingerprint registered on my lock while I was away on business, giving him free access to my home.

He was telling me that Gwendolyn taught him how to cook every day after work.

They probably went grocery shopping together, deciding what cooking oil and seasonings to buy, what fruit to have after dinner, how to queue for matches in the latest game, and what she'd teach him to cook the next evening.

Sure enough, a bottle of his favorite aftershave had appeared on my bathroom counter.

The fruit bowl was filled almost entirely with his favorite tropical fruits.

Even the photo of Gwendolyn and me had quietly been replaced with a picture of the three of us at the beach.

Ryder stood in the middle, smiling broadly with one hand subtly resting on Gwendolyn's lower back.

They looked like a couple while I stood off to the side, with other beachgoers blocking most of my face.

When I'd suggested retaking the picture, Gwendolyn's objection was swift and brutal. "Maybe next time. Can't you see Ryder's about to get heatstroke? You're his friend. How could you not notice?"

Now that I thought about it, I'd been too oblivious.

"Don't just sit there. Have some fruit."

Gwendolyn pushed the freshly cut fruit toward us and pressed a fruit fork into Ryder's hand. When their fingertips touched, they both pursed their lips and quickly looked away.

Then, she handed me a jacket. "Didn't you say your stomach hurt? Don't sit right in front of the air conditioner."

The smile on Ryder's face faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered and started teasing us. "Oh, please! Who needs fruit? I'm already stuffed from watching you two."

She shot him an annoyed look. "Stop teasing us. Grayson is supposed to apologize to you."

Ryder paused before shaking his head with a smile. "There's no need to apologize. Grayson can be a little sensitive sometimes, but I know he's under a lot of pressure. I'll never hold it against him."

"You're always so thoughtful and understanding. You never make a fuss over the little things. Grayson could learn a thing or two from you." Gwendolyn nodded with satisfaction.

I sat right beside them, listening as they took turns making me out to be petty and unreasonable.

The jacket was still warm, but it couldn't keep the cold draft from slipping down my collar.

…

By the end of the night, the blueberries I liked had been picked out of the fruit plate and thrown in the trash.

Gwendolyn took the leftover mangoes across the hall, along with a bottle of milk she'd specially warmed.

When she came back, I asked, "Do we have any milk left?"

She looked down as she changed her shoes. "No. Buy a few more cases tomorrow and take some over to Ryder and his parents. They all like this brand."

'They all?'

She was even looking after his parents now.

I grunted non-committally.

I didn't ask when she'd visited his parents, when she'd added Ryder's fingerprint to the lock, or when she'd changed our bedroom sheets to his favorite shade of bright blue.

Instead, I slipped the ring off my left ring finger.

Gwendolyn noticed and instinctively asked, "Why'd you take off your ring?"

"I've gained a little weight. It's getting tight."

She chuckled, closed the bedroom door, and leaned against my shoulder. "You should get it resized tomorrow."

I nodded and turned off the light.

What she didn't know was that it wasn't the ring that felt too tight. If anything, it was the relationship between the three of us that felt too crowded.

…

Early the next morning, the real estate agent called to say a buyer was eager to close. The deal was just waiting on the paperwork and payment.

I didn't hesitate. I immediately proceeded with the sale.

As I approached the break room at work, I heard hushed laughter from inside.

"Gwen, you're amazing. I only mentioned that my parents wanted to come stay with me, and you immediately bought me a house."

"I had no idea how to bring it up with Grayson, but now he's putting the place up for sale himself! The timing couldn't be better!"

My sweetened latte suddenly tasted bitter.

It seemed that Gwendolyn was the buyer.

"What if Grayson finds out?"

Gwendolyn scoffed dismissively before saying, "I know what he's like. Even if he does get mad, all I have to do is just cook him a couple of dishes to smooth things over."

"What if he changes his mind?"

"Don't be stupid! The deed is in your name now. What good will it do him to get upset?"

My blood ran cold.

I stood there for several seconds, waiting for my breathing to settle.

…

When I finally moved, I knocked on the break room door.

"What are you two talking about? You guys sound like you're having a great time."

Several years passed after the ghosts of my past darkened my doorstep.I became the top project director at a construction company.I was giving a speech at an industry summit when I saw the lobby manager berating a server."What can you even do if you can't even bring someone the right drink? Make one more mistake, and you're fired!"I walked over with an easy smile on my lips. "Mr. Cooper, it's just a minor mix-up. No harm done.""Oh, thank you for being so understanding, Mr. Cross. We'll be more careful next time."The server repeatedly apologized with his head bowed before looking up.We both froze.Ryder's face turned deathly pale when he saw me.I glanced at him and turned to leave, but he hurried after me. "Grayson, thanks for what you did back there.""Call me Mr. Cross," I said curtly.Ryder stiffened, embarrassment written all over his face.I pulled out a tissue and handed it to him. "I only stepped in because I didn't think it was a big deal."He took the tissu

"Grayson, I used the money you transferred to me to buy a house in Bayhaven. It's near your company. The deed is in your name."Gwendolyn stood on the steps, managing a strained smile as she continued, "I hope you won't mind the size. I have nothing left now. Ryder and I… we're not together. I had an abortion. It was my fault for not handling our relationship properly."I turned to look at her. "If that's all you have to say, then let's agree to put the past behind us. We all have to move on eventually."Gwendolyn's smile froze. "But I want to be able to see you."I took out my phone and called my boss. "I've got a lot on my plate right now. Could you assign the deal I signed today to someone else? You can give them the performance bonus, too. I don't mind."My boss gave a brief reply on the other end of the line. Her expression finally changed. "You… hate me that much?""Somewhat. Honestly, I just don't want anything to do with you. So, do me a favor and don't ever tell anyone

Ryder grabbed the suitcase and yanked it toward him, but Gwendolyn's grip on it held firm as she was determined to leave. So, the suitcase struck the corner of the table, sending the photo of the three of them crashing to the floor.Three cracks split the photograph, separating me, Ryder, and Gwendolyn from one another. The living room fell deathly silent.Gwendolyn looked at the photo, her eyes dulling. She spoke as if she was explaining her actions, though it sounded more like she was talking to herself."I used to think Grayson was too driven because he would always pick his career whenever the choice was between me and his career. You were the exact opposite. "You couldn't do anything without my help. I enjoyed being needed. I enjoyed it for a long time. But now… I'm tired."She stared at the broken glass scattered across the floor, her voice growing quieter."I want a partner, a husband. Not a man-child who can't make a single decision without consulting me first. You have

The bedroom door slammed shut in Ryder's face. The following evening, Gwendolyn attended a business function. When she returned home, a faint trace of unfamiliar cologne clung to her collar.Ryder stood beside her, his expression dark.As soon as she set her phone on the table, he snatched it up and demanded, "Where were you tonight? You've been suspended from work. What business function could you possibly have attended?"Her patience wore thin as she barked, "Ryder, that's none of your business!"She snatched her phone back. "And don't take my phone again for no reason!""Why? You never used to mind.""Well, I do now."Ryder stared at her neck and followed her into the study. "Did you go to the reunion? Did you go there to see Grayson?"Gwendolyn slammed her phone down on the desk."Who do you think you are? Why do I have to report my whereabouts to you? He's my fiancé. What's wrong with me going to see him? Can you stop interrogating me every time I come home? Look at your

  • She Lost Me for Good   Chapter 5 The Wrong Groom

The man in the groom's suit wasn't Grayson at all. He was a complete stranger, someone none of them had ever met.Ryder, who was standing behind them, quietly breathed a sigh of relief. He was also the first to break the silence, asking, "Who are you?"Gwendolyn seized the man, fury blazing in her eyes. "Where's Grayson?"He grunted in pain and shook her off, snapping waspishly, "How should I know? You're the one who got herself involved with his best friend and drove him away. Yet, you're demanding answers from me? Are you serious right now?"Then, he spun around and scattered the stack of pictures he'd been hiding behind his back.Every photo showed Gwendolyn personally teaching Ryder how to cook. Others showed her holding his hand while they shopped for groceries or accompanying him to pick up and drop off his parents. The room exploded in an instant."What's going on? Did they drive Grayson away? Is this guy a stand-in groom?""If I were Grayson, I'd leave too. His own girl

My phone kept buzzing with messages from my coworkers."Grayson, Ryder went to SE and signed that contract early, pretending to act on your behalf. Your girlfriend was with him at the time.""You spent six grueling months on that project, and they just stole all your credit!""Ryder and Gwendolyn were practically joined at the hip during that time. I knew those two were doing it on the down low!"Just then, the door lock clicked.Gwendolyn walked over carrying a cola and a latte. She handed the cola to Ryder before looking down at me. "Grayson, we need to talk."I ignored the latte, zipped up my suitcase, and pulled it to my side. "About what? About how you handed my contract over to him? Or how you recommended to HR that he take over my position after I leave?"She stared at me, rendered speechless.I was almost out the door with my suitcase when she finally snapped out of it. She hurried after me, grabbed me in a fit of panic, and began explaining in a rush."Grayson, I'd b
