Chapter 3 Nothing Left to Give

Author: Monthly Explosion
The moment Ryder and Gwendolyn saw me, they immediately took a step away from each other.

Ryder quickly changed the subject. "Didn't you take time off today?"

"Yeah, I have a few things to take care of. I sold the house, and I figured I'd resign while I was at it."

Gwendolyn's expression changed. "Resign? What are you talking about?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I merely walked over to my desk and started packing my things.

She planted a hand on my box to stop me as she raised her voice, demanding hotly, "Grayson, I'm talking to you! What are you doing? You're selling the house, and now you're making a scene about quitting your job?"

I looked up at her.

"What am I doing? I'm making room for you two. Don't you think it's a little crowded when three people work at the same company, in the same building, on the same floor, and live right across the hall from each other?"

She stared at me, momentarily speechless.

"By the way, you bought the house, didn't you? And you gave it to him, too?" I needled.

She answered as if she had every right to do it. "I only lent Ryder the money because he needs it. His parents have always wanted to live with him, but his place was too small. Now that he has two apartments, there's just enough room for his entire family."

I looked at her. "That does sound perfect. The four of you can all live together."

She frowned, irritation creeping into her voice. "Don't say such things just because you're angry. I only helped him because of you. Don't let something this trivial come between us."

Trivial?

When it came to Ryder, even the biggest problems were trivial to her.

If I had a problem with it, I was just being petty.

Once I'd finished packing, I handed her the ring I'd taken off the night before. "You're free to help him however you want from now on."

Gwendolyn's eyes flashed with fury the second she saw the ring. "You've taken this too far! You've been throwing a fit since last night! Are you ever going to let this go?"

Ryder finally came over from his corner. Then, he spoke with a distinctly wounded note beneath it. "Grayson, this is all my fault. Please don't fight because of me."

I snorted and retorted, "Isn't this exactly what you wanted?"

The pitiful look on his face stiffened.

Gwendolyn immediately stepped in front of him, her voice accusatory. "If you put that ring away, I swear to you I'll find someone else to marry next week."

I didn't respond. I simply slipped the ring into her pocket. Then, I picked up the box and walked past her toward the door.

"Grayson!"

I didn't answer her or look back. If anything, I sped up.

…

My father called me just as I got to the elevator. When I answered, he immediately launched into a tirade.

"Go back and apologize to Gwendolyn right this instant! You're making a scene over a meal and a house? What are you, five? She was only trying to help. Besides, she wasn't helping some stranger, but your friend. What did she do wrong?"

My mother snatched the phone from him, hissing, "Your brother just bought a house with the 500,000 dollars she gave him. Do you expect us to pay her back now that you're not getting married?"

My brother shouted in the background, "I'm not giving the money back! How am I supposed to buy a house if I return it?"

They were my kin, the people who were supposed to be closest to me. Yet, they never once sided with me whenever it mattered most.

I went home to pack my things 30 minutes later.

…

I was halfway through my things when someone knocked on the door.

Ryder was sipping a cup of yogurt when I turned around. He grinned at me. "Your fridge is practically mine now. It's full of all my favorite foods. Sorry about that."

He wasn't talking about the fridge. He meant my home and Gwendolyn.

I straightened up and looked at him. "The house hasn't been handed over yet. You know you can't just walk in here."

He settled comfortably onto the couch and chuckled. "Grayson, don't be so harsh. If this is about the house, I'll give it back to you."

I scoffed. "Drop the act. If you really wanted to give it back, you wouldn't have let Gwendolyn buy it for you."

He looked at me, the smile deepening on his face.

"I never asked her to. She knew I missed my parents and felt sorry for me because I was alone and couldn't take care of myself. She bought it for me all on her own. I tried to refuse, but she wouldn't listen."

He smirked. "You used to let me have whatever I wanted. Why won't you now?"

I couldn't believe he had the gall to make this my fault.

I stared at him before chuckling in disbelief. "I am doing just that, aren't I? I've given you the house and my girlfriend. You've gotten everything you wanted. That's why you're here, rubbing it in my face."

That finally wiped the smirk off his face. "It's not my fault you couldn't keep her by your side. Don't blame me. Everyone at work says we make a better couple!"

He paused before adding with a sneer, "I'm a better fit for both your girlfriend and the job you used to have."

Almost at the same moment, the company-wide group chat erupted with congratulations.

"Congratulations to Ryder on his outstanding performance on the SE project! He'll be officially replacing Grayson as project manager effective tomorrow."

Several years passed after the ghosts of my past darkened my doorstep.I became the top project director at a construction company.I was giving a speech at an industry summit when I saw the lobby manager berating a server."What can you even do if you can't even bring someone the right drink? Make one more mistake, and you're fired!"I walked over with an easy smile on my lips. "Mr. Cooper, it's just a minor mix-up. No harm done.""Oh, thank you for being so understanding, Mr. Cross. We'll be more careful next time."The server repeatedly apologized with his head bowed before looking up.We both froze.Ryder's face turned deathly pale when he saw me.I glanced at him and turned to leave, but he hurried after me. "Grayson, thanks for what you did back there.""Call me Mr. Cross," I said curtly.Ryder stiffened, embarrassment written all over his face.I pulled out a tissue and handed it to him. "I only stepped in because I didn't think it was a big deal."He took the tissu

"Grayson, I used the money you transferred to me to buy a house in Bayhaven. It's near your company. The deed is in your name."Gwendolyn stood on the steps, managing a strained smile as she continued, "I hope you won't mind the size. I have nothing left now. Ryder and I… we're not together. I had an abortion. It was my fault for not handling our relationship properly."I turned to look at her. "If that's all you have to say, then let's agree to put the past behind us. We all have to move on eventually."Gwendolyn's smile froze. "But I want to be able to see you."I took out my phone and called my boss. "I've got a lot on my plate right now. Could you assign the deal I signed today to someone else? You can give them the performance bonus, too. I don't mind."My boss gave a brief reply on the other end of the line. Her expression finally changed. "You… hate me that much?""Somewhat. Honestly, I just don't want anything to do with you. So, do me a favor and don't ever tell anyone

Ryder grabbed the suitcase and yanked it toward him, but Gwendolyn's grip on it held firm as she was determined to leave. So, the suitcase struck the corner of the table, sending the photo of the three of them crashing to the floor.Three cracks split the photograph, separating me, Ryder, and Gwendolyn from one another. The living room fell deathly silent.Gwendolyn looked at the photo, her eyes dulling. She spoke as if she was explaining her actions, though it sounded more like she was talking to herself."I used to think Grayson was too driven because he would always pick his career whenever the choice was between me and his career. You were the exact opposite. "You couldn't do anything without my help. I enjoyed being needed. I enjoyed it for a long time. But now… I'm tired."She stared at the broken glass scattered across the floor, her voice growing quieter."I want a partner, a husband. Not a man-child who can't make a single decision without consulting me first. You have

The bedroom door slammed shut in Ryder's face. The following evening, Gwendolyn attended a business function. When she returned home, a faint trace of unfamiliar cologne clung to her collar.Ryder stood beside her, his expression dark.As soon as she set her phone on the table, he snatched it up and demanded, "Where were you tonight? You've been suspended from work. What business function could you possibly have attended?"Her patience wore thin as she barked, "Ryder, that's none of your business!"She snatched her phone back. "And don't take my phone again for no reason!""Why? You never used to mind.""Well, I do now."Ryder stared at her neck and followed her into the study. "Did you go to the reunion? Did you go there to see Grayson?"Gwendolyn slammed her phone down on the desk."Who do you think you are? Why do I have to report my whereabouts to you? He's my fiancé. What's wrong with me going to see him? Can you stop interrogating me every time I come home? Look at your

  • She Lost Me for Good   Chapter 5 The Wrong Groom

The man in the groom's suit wasn't Grayson at all. He was a complete stranger, someone none of them had ever met.Ryder, who was standing behind them, quietly breathed a sigh of relief. He was also the first to break the silence, asking, "Who are you?"Gwendolyn seized the man, fury blazing in her eyes. "Where's Grayson?"He grunted in pain and shook her off, snapping waspishly, "How should I know? You're the one who got herself involved with his best friend and drove him away. Yet, you're demanding answers from me? Are you serious right now?"Then, he spun around and scattered the stack of pictures he'd been hiding behind his back.Every photo showed Gwendolyn personally teaching Ryder how to cook. Others showed her holding his hand while they shopped for groceries or accompanying him to pick up and drop off his parents. The room exploded in an instant."What's going on? Did they drive Grayson away? Is this guy a stand-in groom?""If I were Grayson, I'd leave too. His own girl

My phone kept buzzing with messages from my coworkers."Grayson, Ryder went to SE and signed that contract early, pretending to act on your behalf. Your girlfriend was with him at the time.""You spent six grueling months on that project, and they just stole all your credit!""Ryder and Gwendolyn were practically joined at the hip during that time. I knew those two were doing it on the down low!"Just then, the door lock clicked.Gwendolyn walked over carrying a cola and a latte. She handed the cola to Ryder before looking down at me. "Grayson, we need to talk."I ignored the latte, zipped up my suitcase, and pulled it to my side. "About what? About how you handed my contract over to him? Or how you recommended to HR that he take over my position after I leave?"She stared at me, rendered speechless.I was almost out the door with my suitcase when she finally snapped out of it. She hurried after me, grabbed me in a fit of panic, and began explaining in a rush."Grayson, I'd b
