Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
"I'm already putting together the handover documents," I told Eleanor. "I'll get them to Jared as soon as I can. Until then, tell him to stop bothering me."

She seemed confused. "Handover? Once he leaves, you'll still have your position."

"We've broken up, Eleanor. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to keep working here."

"What? I never agreed to that breakup!"

She shot to her feet, her face turning livid. "Seriously, Cory? You're going to throw everything away over one incident?"

"But it's more than one incident, though. Have you forgotten what happened two years ago?"

Two years ago, on the day Eleanor and I were supposed to celebrate our anniversary, Jared suddenly called her, saying he had a high fever. Despite my protests, she insisted on taking him to the hospital.

She was gone for the next two days. When she finally came back, she apologized profusely.

She said she couldn't bear the thought of Jared being alone in a strange city with no one to look after him, especially when his family all lived in other cities.

She promised it would never happen again. I still loved her deeply back then, so I forgave her. Still, I made it clear that I wouldn't tolerate it a second time.

When Eleanor heard me bringing it up, she laughed. "Are you jealous? That was so long ago, and you still remember it. Fine, I promise. After this time, I'll cut off all contact with him.

"Just give me one more chance. Isn't there a saying that goes, 'three strikes and you're out?'"

I shook my head. "You should focus on getting him up to speed instead."

Her expression changed. "Are you serious?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

I turned and walked out of the office. The moment I closed the door behind me, I heard something smash inside.

This wasn't baseball where the three-strikes law applied. Forgiving her that first time had simply been because I had been blinded by love.

When I returned to my office, I saw Jared directing someone to carry out a cardboard box. The person was dragging their feet and taking their time. When he saw me, he visibly relaxed.

My heart sank. I frowned. "What's the rush?"

Jared folded his arms. "Eleanor said I could use this office, so I had someone pack up your things."

I glanced at him. "You could've waited until I got back. Didn't your parents teach you not to mess with other people's things when they're not around?"

I took the box from the other employee. "You can go. I'll handle it."

He quickly agreed and left.

Once I was inside the office, I immediately started going through the box. Jared hurried in after me. "What are you doing?"

"Checking to make sure nothing's missing or damaged."

He scoffed. "As if I'd steal your things."

Just then, I spotted the fountain pen at the bottom of the box, the very thing I had been worried about. The moment I saw it, blood rushed to my head.

That was the pen I treasured more than anything. Now it had been tossed carelessly into the box with its cap loosened. The nib was bent and split, clearly damaged from being dropped.

Grandpa had given me that pen when I graduated from high school. He passed away from illness not long afterward, and I had kept using that pen ever since.

I took several deep breaths before I could get myself under control. I held the damaged pen out toward Jared. "How do you explain this?"

He barely even looked at it. "It slipped and fell while we were packing your things. Just get yourself another one."

The moment I heard that, I stopped holding back and drove my right fist straight into Jared's face. He was stunned. When he came to his senses, he covered his face, livid. "You hit me?"

I sneered. "Damn right I did!"

I was just about to hit him again when someone shoved me from behind. I stumbled into the corner of the desk, pain shooting through my left hand.

Eleanor stood there with a grim expression. "It was just a fountain pen. Did you have to hit him over it?"

I stared at her. "You know what that pen means to me."

"And? It's still just an object. I'll pay you back for it. Now, apologize to Jared."

I was completely done with her. "You started this. Don't blame me for finishing it."

Their faces were bruised and swollen, and their hair was completely disheveled. The Stones stood around them with their sleeves rolled up.One should never underestimate the strength of older men and women when they were pissed.Eleanor and George shamelessly tried to redirect their anger toward Carter Group, telling them to demand money from the Carters.Luckily, I had already given Madeline a heads-up. It turned out she had been working behind the scenes, too. In the end, the Stone family got their money and finally agreed to leave. As for Eleanor and George, they were left with a mountain of predatory debt they would never be able to repay in their lifetimes.Later, I found out the reason Jared had been so eager to get Eleanor and me back t

Jared's expression grew even more desperate, as if he was determined to get Eleanor and me back together."I don't go back to old flames," I said. "Don't come looking for me again. If you keep interfering with my work, I'll call the police.""No! You can't leave!"He shot to his feet so quickly that the chair scraped loudly across the floor. "You have to promise me you'll get back together with her!"I had become a regular at this cafe since joining Carter Group, so one of the staff came over to ask if I needed help. I nodded. "Please call the police."The moment Jared heard that, he left in a hurry.I supposed he and Eleanor were truly made for each other because when I got home and parked in my apartment complex, I found her waiting under a streetlamp. I had no idea how she had found my new address. She looked haggard and disheveled. "Cory, I messed up. Please forgive me! If you come back to me, I promise I'll cut off all contact with Jared!"Help me get the company back on i

Anastasia looked displeased. "Where are the security guards? How did they let someone like this in?"George panicked. He quickly pulled Eleanor forward. "Anastasia, she's your daughter! You promised me that one day you'd let her return to the Carter family and take her rightful place!"Eleanor snapped, "Dad, forget about this woman who abandoned her man and daughter. We don't need her, and I couldn't care less about joining their family!"For all her words, however, her eyes remained fixed on the Carters onstage. The greed, envy, and jealousy in her gaze couldn't have been more obvious.Anastasia chuckled. "Oh. It's you. I remember now."George became excited, only for her next words to shatter his fantasy. "You must be looking for my little sister, Sandra. She never stopped thinking about you, even before she died."Before joining Carter Group, I had heard that Anastasia had a younger sister. She had been quite the heartbreaker in her younger days. In the end, she died in an acc

I thought I caught a trace of provocation in Madeline's words."You hear that, Cory?" Eleanor shrieked. "You're dispensable to her!"I could hardly follow her logic. "What the hell are you going on about?"Wasn't it perfectly normal for both employer and employee to have the right to choose?Eleanor was about to keep making a scene when several more security guards arrived and restrained her. They asked whether we wanted to call the police, and Madeline turned to me for my opinion.Honestly, I wanted Eleanor to stay out of my life forever. Realistically, though, even if we called the police, all they could do was give her a warning and send her on her way. Therefore, I reluctantly said I would rather the company tighten security and that we could forget about calling the police this time.By then, Eleanor had calmed down a little. She shot Madeline a resentful look. "I'll get justice for my dad and me. We'll take back everything that belongs to us."After Eleanor left, the secu

Oh. So they were only looking to rent a place. With how smug they were acting, I had thought they were here to buy one.Eleanor scrambled to explain, "My place needs some renovations, so I thought I'd rent somewhere for the time being."Jared put an arm around her shoulders. "Actually, Eleanor and I are back together. We have you to thank for that, Mr. Young. You'll give us your blessing, right?"They were renting an apartment, yet they somehow managed to turn it into such a production. I wasn't the only one. Everyone else in the room looked awkward, too."Sure. Congrats."In fact, they should stay together forever and not ruin others' lives. They were speechless for a moment. I took the opportunity to follow the agent into an office so we could discuss the details properly.…I didn't see Eleanor and Jared again for quite some time after that. The gap between our companies was simply too wide, so there wasn't much overlap between our business circles.Still, now and then, my

On the phone, George accused me of being ungrateful and irresponsible. He said I had lived off Eleanor's money for years, yet I had let my bad temper get the better of me by refusing to take care of him at the hospital. Worse still, I had now "betrayed" his daughter."I knew from the start that you and my daughter weren't a good match," he seethed. "If she hadn't insisted on you over and over, I never would've agreed. How can you live with yourself after treating her like that?"Even when Eleanor and I were dating, George had always made it clear, in one way or another, that he looked down on me.Thus, we rarely spoke on the phone. That was also why, when Eleanor and I broke up, I blocked every way she could contact me, but I somehow forgot about him.I was about to block him, too, but what he said next stopped me. "When you have time, bring your parents to see me. I'd like to ask them myself how they raised a son like you!"I could tolerate him insulting me, but bringing my pare
