Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
To my surprise, Jared was also in Eleanor's office.

Before I could even react, she immediately started in on me. "What was wrong with you yesterday? Didn't I tell you to check on Dad? Do you have any idea… Thank goodness I sent Ned."

I hadn't closed the door. Ned Wilson happened to walk past and overheard her. He looked like he had just swallowed something awful before shuffling away.

He was Eleanor's assistant. She always sent him to handle her personal errands without paying him overtime.

I had warned her repeatedly not to take advantage of him, and only then did she reluctantly give him a small raise.

I closed the door and gave a dry laugh. "I called you and told you what was going on, but you were busy having a private little date with Jared and ended up blocking me."

Jared's face fell. "Mr. Young, I know it was wrong of me to interrupt your day with Eleanor yesterday, but nothing happened between us. You can't slander me like that."

Eleanor didn't look any better. "Watch what you say, Cory. I already told you yesterday that I only left to be a good friend to Jared. Stop making everything sound so filthy."

"And you brought your good friend here to the office?" I countered.

She fell silent for a moment before arguing, "He said he wanted to find something to do, so I brought him here. Starting today, he'll take your position. You'll work as his deputy."

I stared at her. "What?"

Her tone was matter-of-fact. "He needs some work experience. Don't worry. Other than your title changing, everything else about your benefits stays the same."

Jared chimed in stubbornly. "I won't be staying at this company for long, so you don't have to worry, Mr. Young."

I was amused. "Who's going to do the work, then?"

There was quite a difference between the responsibilities of a director and a deputy director.

"Jared has been abroad all this time, so he's not used to the workplace here," Eleanor answered guiltily. "So, you'll be helping him out."

Jared faked a carefree expression. "You know what? Forget it. I suppose I was asking for too much anyway. I'll figure something else out."

"Wait!"

Eleanor grabbed his arm, then turned to me. "Can you not do this, Cory? Don't even get me started on how you dropped the ball yesterday."

"Alright, enough with the little act," I said, smiling faintly. "I'll quit."

Word of my resignation spread through the company pretty quickly. One after another, the people on my team messaged me in our group chat, asking if I wanted to take them with me.

I was surprised. I hadn't realized Eleanor was so unpopular, though at the same time, I couldn't say I was completely shocked.

Things had been fine when we were just starting, but as the company grew, Eleanor gradually stopped treating the employees with respect.

She was always cutting corners when it came to benefits. The most she gave them was promises of future rewards that never seemed to come.

After I told her about it one too many times, she started getting annoyed with me. She began preaching her whole "boss' mindset" to me.

I didn't want to burn every bridge, and I planned to take some time off before looking for another job, so I politely turned down my team's offer.

Every one of them was highly capable. If they left and looked elsewhere, they could easily find jobs that were better than this one.

A few days later, I unexpectedly got a call from a headhunter. He told me that Carter Group was offering me twice my current salary, along with several other generous benefits, and wanted me to join them.

He also said that if I could bring my team with me, the salary package could be negotiated even further.

After hanging up, I was puzzled.

Carter Group was a major corporate powerhouse in the country. Eleanor's company had done well, but next to Carter Group, there was no comparison.

Why would they send a headhunter after my entire team and me?

At first, I thought it had to be a scam, but the information the headhunter sent me checked out. It really was them.

No matter how hard I thought about it, I couldn't figure out what connection I had to them. Still, an opportunity like this didn't come around every day, so I replied that I was willing to meet and discuss it.

Just then, Eleanor asked me to go to her office. When I walked in, she was sitting there with a dark expression.

"What do you want?"

"Why won't you cooperate with Jared?"

"Cooperate with him how? Making him tea, fetching coffee, making copies, and delivering documents? Is that my job?"

"He… doesn't know how things work yet. You don't have to be so hostile about it. You could teach him."

Before long, Felicia's elderly parents, along with her brothers and sisters, all came looking for Eleanor and George. The private investigator's final update came in the form of a few photos.Eleanor and George were sprawled on the ground. Their faces were bruised and swollen, and their hair was completely disheveled. The Stones stood around them with their sleeves rolled up.One should never underestimate the strength of older men and women when they were pissed.Eleanor and George shamelessly tried to redirect their anger toward Carter Group, telling them to demand money from the Carters.Luckily, I had already given Madeline a heads-up. It turned out she had been working behind the scenes, too. In the end, the Stone family got their money and finally agreed to leave. As for Eleanor and George, they were left with a mountain of predatory debt they would never be able to repay in their lifetimes.Later, I found out the reason Jared had been so eager to get Eleanor and me back t

Jared's expression grew even more desperate, as if he was determined to get Eleanor and me back together."I don't go back to old flames," I said. "Don't come looking for me again. If you keep interfering with my work, I'll call the police.""No! You can't leave!"He shot to his feet so quickly that the chair scraped loudly across the floor. "You have to promise me you'll get back together with her!"I had become a regular at this cafe since joining Carter Group, so one of the staff came over to ask if I needed help. I nodded. "Please call the police."The moment Jared heard that, he left in a hurry.I supposed he and Eleanor were truly made for each other because when I got home and parked in my apartment complex, I found her waiting under a streetlamp. I had no idea how she had found my new address. She looked haggard and disheveled. "Cory, I messed up. Please forgive me! If you come back to me, I promise I'll cut off all contact with Jared!"Help me get the company back on i

Anastasia looked displeased. "Where are the security guards? How did they let someone like this in?"George panicked. He quickly pulled Eleanor forward. "Anastasia, she's your daughter! You promised me that one day you'd let her return to the Carter family and take her rightful place!"Eleanor snapped, "Dad, forget about this woman who abandoned her man and daughter. We don't need her, and I couldn't care less about joining their family!"For all her words, however, her eyes remained fixed on the Carters onstage. The greed, envy, and jealousy in her gaze couldn't have been more obvious.Anastasia chuckled. "Oh. It's you. I remember now."George became excited, only for her next words to shatter his fantasy. "You must be looking for my little sister, Sandra. She never stopped thinking about you, even before she died."Before joining Carter Group, I had heard that Anastasia had a younger sister. She had been quite the heartbreaker in her younger days. In the end, she died in an acc

I thought I caught a trace of provocation in Madeline's words."You hear that, Cory?" Eleanor shrieked. "You're dispensable to her!"I could hardly follow her logic. "What the hell are you going on about?"Wasn't it perfectly normal for both employer and employee to have the right to choose?Eleanor was about to keep making a scene when several more security guards arrived and restrained her. They asked whether we wanted to call the police, and Madeline turned to me for my opinion.Honestly, I wanted Eleanor to stay out of my life forever. Realistically, though, even if we called the police, all they could do was give her a warning and send her on her way. Therefore, I reluctantly said I would rather the company tighten security and that we could forget about calling the police this time.By then, Eleanor had calmed down a little. She shot Madeline a resentful look. "I'll get justice for my dad and me. We'll take back everything that belongs to us."After Eleanor left, the secu

Oh. So they were only looking to rent a place. With how smug they were acting, I had thought they were here to buy one.Eleanor scrambled to explain, "My place needs some renovations, so I thought I'd rent somewhere for the time being."Jared put an arm around her shoulders. "Actually, Eleanor and I are back together. We have you to thank for that, Mr. Young. You'll give us your blessing, right?"They were renting an apartment, yet they somehow managed to turn it into such a production. I wasn't the only one. Everyone else in the room looked awkward, too."Sure. Congrats."In fact, they should stay together forever and not ruin others' lives. They were speechless for a moment. I took the opportunity to follow the agent into an office so we could discuss the details properly.…I didn't see Eleanor and Jared again for quite some time after that. The gap between our companies was simply too wide, so there wasn't much overlap between our business circles.Still, now and then, my

On the phone, George accused me of being ungrateful and irresponsible. He said I had lived off Eleanor's money for years, yet I had let my bad temper get the better of me by refusing to take care of him at the hospital. Worse still, I had now "betrayed" his daughter."I knew from the start that you and my daughter weren't a good match," he seethed. "If she hadn't insisted on you over and over, I never would've agreed. How can you live with yourself after treating her like that?"Even when Eleanor and I were dating, George had always made it clear, in one way or another, that he looked down on me.Thus, we rarely spoke on the phone. That was also why, when Eleanor and I broke up, I blocked every way she could contact me, but I somehow forgot about him.I was about to block him, too, but what he said next stopped me. "When you have time, bring your parents to see me. I'd like to ask them myself how they raised a son like you!"I could tolerate him insulting me, but bringing my pare
