Chapter 4

Autor: White Warbler
I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and turned to leave. My lower abdomen twisted with pain, and my legs were shaking, but I kept my back straight.

The moment I stepped out of the office, the tears I'd been holding back finally came. I cried for myself, for the child who would never be born, and for seven years of love wasted on the wrong man.

My phone buzzed. It was the private investigator.

"Ms. Keller, I found something. The anonymous donor funding the account for your mother's medical expenses isn't Dylan Tate."

For a moment, my mind went blank. My knees buckled, and I caught myself against the wall before I could fall. I should have suspected it years ago.

A few years back, Dylan had run into financial trouble and nearly gone bankrupt. Even then, Mom had never missed a single dose of her medication, though each dose cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That was when I'd quietly had someone look into it. I just hadn't expected it to take this long.

"So who is it?" I asked.

"We haven't been able to identify the donor yet."

For seven years, I'd believed Dylan was the one paying for Mom's treatment. I thought I owed him, so I spent seven years dating him in secret.

It turned out I'd been wrong about everything.

The private investigator had also traced where Dylan's money had gone over the past seven years.

He discovered that Dylan had stopped putting money toward Mom's medical expenses five years ago. Most of those funds had gone into Jessica's overseas accounts instead.

For seven years, Dylan had repeatedly claimed he was away on business when he was really meeting Jessica in secret. They'd been seeing each other all along.

Tears streamed down my face as I realized what a hopeless fool I'd been. I wasted seven years of love on him.

Then I got devastating news from the hospital.

"Ms. Keller, your mother's tumor ruptured, and she fell into a deep coma. We had no choice but to stop the surgery. We did everything we could."

Tears spilled down my face as I covered my mouth, refusing to let a sob escape.

I was on my way to the hospital when Dylan called.

He sounded guilty. "Ashley, I'm sorry. I just heard about your mom. If I'd known—"

I cut him off. "Dylan, we're done."

He went quiet for a few seconds, then sighed. "Don't say that. Did you forget what your mom wanted? She wanted us to get married. Don't do this, okay? Jessica's already left. We'll make it official tomorrow."

Dylan hung up before I could even refuse.

For seven years, it had always been like this. Dylan and I had never had those long phone calls other couples did. Most of the time, I was left listening to the line go dead.

But this time, I'd finally heard it for the last time.

While I was still grieving, Mom's doctor called.

A leading specialist in Marovia had agreed to review Mom's case, and he'd successfully treated similar cases before. But in a week, he was due to leave for another country to join a medical aid mission.

The window was tight, so we needed to leave as soon as possible. Without hesitation, I packed my bags that night and caught the first flight to Marovia before dawn.

Before I left, I handed the butler a black gift box. "Please give this to Dylan when he gets back."

As I walked through the front gate, I couldn't help glancing back at the place I'd lived for seven years.

Then I turned around and walked away without another glance.

  • She Never Looked Back   Chapter 10

I finally realized that not every relationship felt the same. In all seven years with Dylan, he had never done any of these things for me.He never told me anything unless I asked. I was always the one waiting, asking, and guessing. On the rare occasions he bothered to message me, I'd be happy all day.He never once introduced me as his girlfriend. It was always just, "This is Ashley Keller," said so casually that I might as well have been nobody important.I was always the one waiting for Dylan to show up. Whether we were meeting at a restaurant, a hotel, or the airport, he was usually late. I never dared ask him to hurry, afraid he'd say I was being unreasonable. He didn't even know I was allergic to seafood. Once, at a group dinner, he ordered crab for practically the entire meal. I didn't touch any of it, and he just assumed I was dieting. All those small, ordinary things, good and bad, had built up so slowly that I barely noticed until they became overwhelming.I wasn't tryi

A week later, Nathan and I sat across from each other at a small restaurant in Caldrane.I got straight to the point. "Nathan, thank you."He looked up in surprise. "For what? If you mean covering the medical bills, don't worry about it. It was nothing."I smiled. "Remember when I asked you to give me some time at the reunion? I have my answer now."Nathan looked at me intently, though he was clearly nervous. "So what's your answer?""Yes. I want to give this a chance."He nearly dropped his fork. "What about Dylan?""We broke up. I want a fresh start. If you still want to be with me and don't mind that I spent seven years in a secret relationship, then I'd like to see where this goes."I couldn't tell him I knew he'd been paying for Mom's treatment all these years. If I told him, he might think I was only saying yes to repay him.Nathan smiled. "So you don't mind that I'm broke and just a supervisor at a small company?"I couldn't help laughing. When I first met Nathan, I h

My words caught Dylan off guard. For a long moment, he couldn't make sense of what I meant. He had no idea what money I was talking about or what lie I was accusing him of.It took him a while to piece it together. After all, he'd spent ten years in business and was far too sharp to miss what I was implying. He pulled out his phone and called Amanda Fisher, the company's CFO."Pull the transfer records for every payment made toward Mrs. Keller's medical expenses over the past seven years. Print them and send them to me."As soon as Amanda hung up, she called her cousin, Jessica."Jessica, we've got a serious problem. Mr. Tate wants the transfer records for Mrs. Keller's medical expenses. What do I do?"Jessica forced herself to stay calm. "Don't panic. Stick to the plan."Ten minutes later, Dylan received an email containing seven years of transfer records. He went through the records transaction by transaction, then forwarded the file to the legal department."Look into this.

Dylan coming to Marovia didn't surprise me. I hadn't blocked him or tried to hide from him. When someone no longer mattered to you, there was no reason to do either.I scoffed. "What do you want?"He'd sounded tough at first, but I was even colder, and for a moment he didn't know what to say. Finally, he managed, "How's your mom?""That's none of your business."His tone softened. "Let's meet and talk in person.""There's no need. I'm hanging up.""If you're angry about the baby, that's not fair. I didn't even know you were pregnant. Why didn't you tell me?"I hung up before he could finish. The line went dead again, and Dylan's stomach dropped.Furious, he called his assistant. "Find out where Ashley is staying in Marovia. I want the address now."Ten minutes later, his assistant sent him my hotel address. It was 11:00 pm when I got back to the hotel from the hospital.A figure suddenly rushed out of the darkness and wrapped his arms tightly around me. I knew that scent i

Inside the box was the embryonic tissue I'd brought back from the hospital, in a sealed specimen container. Beneath it was the report confirming my miscarriage.Dylan suddenly remembered the day Jessica and I had clashed. He'd kicked me without thinking. He'd thought he hadn't kicked me very hard, but the blow had sent me crashing into the corner. Blood had soaked through my pants. He'd panicked and started toward me, but Jessica distracted him. Later, after taking her to get checked out, he'd meant to come back. Then Jessica suggested it might just be my period, so he let it go.He never imagined that kick had killed his own child. Regret, guilt, pain, and despair burned through him, nearly consuming him.Dylan called me again. Just as he'd expected, I didn't answer.Still grieving and angry, he suddenly remembered hearing the airport announcement for a flight to Marovia. He called Mom's doctor right away."Dr. Lane, how is Mrs. Keller doing?""She's already been transferred t

  • She Never Looked Back   Chapter 5

By the time Dylan got back from dropping Jessica off at the airport, it was already late. Oddly, after seeing her off, he found himself feeling a little down and had a few drinks. He'd considered going to the hospital, but he worried I would notice something was off and start making snide remarks. In the end, he decided not to go.The mansion was completely dark except for a light in the staff quarters downstairs.Dylan switched on the light by the stairs and headed up. When he reached the second floor, Edward Scott, the longtime butler, called to him."Mr. Tate, Ms. Keller left something for you."Dylan looked surprised. "Ashley came back?""Yes."He took the small black gift box from Edward. It was tied with a dark red ribbon, and the whole thing had a somber, heavy look. For some reason, his heart felt heavy the moment he took it. It wasn't an anniversary or a birthday, and there was nothing special about the day."Did Ashley say what this was for?"Edward shook his head.
