Chapter 4

Author: Twenty Springs
The next day, the McCarthy house was bustling from first thing in the morning.

Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy cheerfully greeted guests as they came and went.

Plenty of neighbors had already gathered there.

As the guest of honor, Claudia stood right in the middle of it all, beaming.

There was even an engagement party banner hanging off to one side, with a photo of Claudia and Mike beside it.

Mrs. McCarthy kept explaining to people, "The Greenwood boy was the one who called off the engagement. He said he wasn't good enough for our daughter.

"And he's right. He can't get into university and has to repeat a year. He and Claudia just won't have anything in common anymore."

I found the whole thing ridiculous.

When Claudia and I got engaged, our families had only exchanged tokens. There had never been an engagement party.

This time, Claudia was not only throwing one, she was combining it with her university send-off party. And on top of that, Mrs. McCarthy was pinning all the blame on me.

When I showed up, a lot of the neighbors started whispering.

"The Greenwood boy actually came? He looks like he's here to make trouble."

"You can't really blame the McCarthys. Claudia got into Kingsbridge, and the Greenwood boy didn't even get into university. And his father's a convict on top of that. Nobody would put up with that."

The more Claudia heard, the more smug she looked.

She hooked her arm through Mike's, walked up to me, and sneered, "Tim, I didn't think you'd actually come.

"Then again, it makes sense. This is probably the only time in your life you'll ever see a Kingsbridge acceptance letter with your own eyes."

Mike gave me a smug look, too. "Tim, I really have to thank you. If you hadn't been smart enough to call off the engagement, I never would've had a chance. Claudia even said she'd talk to the admissions office for me so I could go to Kingsbridge too.

"All of this was supposed to be yours, Tim. You were just too impulsive."

He shook his head with fake pity.

I just found it laughable. I'd had to work hard to convince Kingsbridge to take her.

Mike's scores were so bad he'd have to pay his way into even a diploma mill. And he was actually dreaming of riding Claudia's coattails into Kingsbridge.

I nearly laughed out loud.

Claudia looked at Mike, her eyes full of tenderness.

"You're the only one I'd go to this much trouble for, Mike. It's all my fault for coming to my senses so late. Otherwise, I wouldn't have made you hide for three years."

With that, she turned to me and said condescendingly, "Tim, once you've seen the Kingsbridge acceptance letter, you can leave. After all, we have nothing to do with each other anymore, and I don't want Mike to get the wrong idea.

"Of course, if you get down on your knees and apologize right now, I might give you another chance. Even though we'll be worlds apart from now on, I'm loyal to old ties. You can stay here and take care of my parents."

Before she could finish spouting her fantasy, a roar of noise rose from the street.

Car after car pulled up toward the McCarthy house.

A wall of cameras, the Kingsbridge admissions team, and a crowd of reporters all made their way over.

Claudia lit up with excitement. She hurried forward to greet them.

The next second, the crowd went right past her and headed straight for me.

The Kingsbridge admissions officer placed the acceptance letter in my hands with a smile. "Congratulations, Mr. Greenwood, on getting into Kingsbridge as the top scorer in the entire state!"

Claudia choked out, "Tim, you weren't like this before. I know I broke your heart, but I really can't repeat a year. My mom won't pay for my schooling anymore."Claudia said it all over again, as if she couldn't understand a word I'd said.I'd run out of patience. I cut her off again and didn't bother being polite. "Claudia, didn't I make myself clear enough at your party? Whatever reason you and Mike got together, it has nothing to do with me, because we're not connected anymore."The look in my eyes was frighteningly cold.Claudia stumbled back a few steps, but she still refused to give up. "Tim, I know you still love me. All this time, you haven't been with anyone new. Besides, you've loved me for so many years. How could you not love me anymore?"I know you're still mad at me over what happened. It's fine if I don't get the Kingsbridge spot. But could you lend me the twenty thousand dollars the Barretts want first? Please?"I know you have money. The Barretts are really pushi

After a whole round of interviews, my mother finally turned her attention to the acceptance letter in my hands. She took it carefully, her eyes reddening as she looked at the name printed on it."Tim, you finally got into university. If your father were out right now, he'd be so happy. Tomorrow, let's take the acceptance letter and go see him."Looking at her red-rimmed eyes, I gave a firm nod.In that moment, I was incredibly grateful my grades were good enough.Even though Claudia had changed my application, even if Kingsbridge really hadn't accepted me, I still would've gotten into Westbury. If I hadn't worked hard these past three years and then had my application changed by Claudia, I might really have had to wait a year.Who knew how many people in this neighborhood were just waiting to laugh at my family? When my father went to prison for saving Claudia, countless neighbors came by to comfort us, yet every word they said was about how foolish he'd been. He'd landed hims

At that, Claudia stared at me in disbelief. "Tim? How could you do this to me?"I found the question absurd. Why couldn't I treat her this way?Barely an hour had passed. Had Claudia already forgotten what she'd done to me?I wasn't the only one who thought she was ridiculous. Every neighbor and guest there felt the same way.Once word got out that I'd gotten into Kingsbridge, the neighbors had suddenly turned warm and friendly again. Now, they all looked at Claudia with nothing but contempt."Tsk, tsk. How does the McCarthy girl still have the nerve to say that? If I remember right, when she thought she'd gotten into Kingsbridge, she dumped young Tim without a second thought.""Exactly. I always said the McCarthys went too far. Young Tim's father went to prison because he saved Claudia. Back then, the McCarthys even said they'd have their daughter get engaged to him to repay the favor."And before they'd even made it big, they couldn't wait to dump him. It's disgraceful."The

At those words, Judy looked ready to faint, too.She clutched Claudia's hand, ignoring how pale her daughter had gone, and dug her sharp nails into her skin. "Claudia! How could you be so useless? After all these years, you can't even get into university? Then what was the point of everything I put up with for you?"If you don't get into university, how are you supposed to compete with your father's illegitimate kids? You ruined my life! I stayed in this marriage all these years for your sake, and this is how you repay me?"Shrieking, Judy ripped away the last shred of cover hiding the McCarthy family's shame.Every eye turned toward them.Judy clearly didn't care anymore and was about to air everything.Russell couldn't take it. His face livid, he slapped Judy across the face. "Are you done yet? You raised a stupid daughter, and you've still got the nerve to throw a fit here!"Judy clutched her cheek, staring at him in disbelief.A moment later, she let out a scream and lung

Just then, my mom finally came out of our house. When she saw what was going on, she hurried over to stop it."Claudia! What do you think you're doing? Let go of my son!"You couldn't get in on your own. Tim was kind enough to give you a chance, and you threw it away yourself. Who are you going to blame now?"Every neighbor there heard it loud and clear. The relatives the McCarthys had invited started exchanging glances, too.The admissions officer and the reporters behind him would never lie about something like this. That meant the liars had to be Claudia and the McCarthys. With that realization, everyone began looking at the McCarthys differently.Judy was so short of breath she nearly collapsed. With the last of her strength, she grabbed Claudia's sleeve."Claudia, didn't you say Kingsbridge had definitely accepted you? I worked myself to the bone raising you all these years, and in the end, you're going to some diploma mill?"Tell me right now! What on earth is going on?

  • She Only Got In Because of Me   Chapter 5

I smiled as I took the acceptance letter, but my eyes misted over.Since freshman year, my grades had been good enough to get into Kingsbridge. But to become the state's top scorer, enough for Kingsbridge to bend its rules and take Claudia too, that level wasn't nearly enough. For today's honor, for this acceptance letter, I'd worked hard for three years.I'd earned this letter, and I had nothing to be ashamed of!I accepted it without a second thought, while Claudia stood frozen in place. She stared at the scene in front of her in disbelief, then finally couldn't stop herself from rushing forward."Sir! You must have made a mistake, right? Tim's grades are even worse than mine. How could he be the top scorer?"I'm the one who really got into Kingsbridge! Sir, don't you remember? You came to tell me before!"Her voice grew louder and louder. The admissions officer frowned in displeasure. "Of course I know which students I'm admitting. "How could Mr. Greenwood's grades be wo
