Chapter 4

Author: Mini Phoenix
According to the people around me, B1 was the hospital's morgue. Two security guards dragged and hauled me there, throwing me inside.

The heavy iron door slammed shut with a bang. The world went quiet at once, leaving only the roar of the industrial AC. I curled up beside a metal cabinet, clamping my left hand tightly over the wound on my right. It was so cold that the blood seeping from my hand quickly grew thick and sticky, then clotted.

"Natalie… where are you… It's so cold…"

I shivered in the dark, my whole body trembling as my consciousness drifted in and out.

I didn't know how much time had passed when there was a loud bang. The morgue door shuddered under a violent impact. Someone outside was hammering at it with something metal.

After a few tries, the lock snapped under the force, and the door was shoved open. A wave of hot, sweaty air rushed in.

"Colin!"

It was Natalie's voice!

She rushed in and threw aside whatever was in her hand. Judging from the sound, it was the trash shovel that she used every day to scoop up garbage.

The moment she saw me huddled in the corner, covered in blood, she let out a pained sob. She tore off her cotton jacket that reeked of cheap laundry detergent and wrapped it tightly around me.

"Don't be scared, okay? I'm here. I'm taking you home."

She grabbed me and took off running. But just as we reached the hallway, I heard a group of people stop before us. Natalie told me it was Andrea with more than a dozen security guards. They formed a solid wall that blocked our way. I didn't know what things looked like, but I felt a suffocating pressure bearing down on me.

Eugene was with Andrea. He looked at Natalie and snarled, "Where did this filthy beggar come from? You think you can just barge into a hospital like this?"

I sensed Andrea's gaze lock onto Natalie's hand, which gripped mine tightly. I felt the rage pour off her, colder and sharper than the air in the morgue.

"Colin, you'd rather cling to some ugly street sweeper with a birthmark on her face than apologize to me?" she hissed.

I didn't understand what she was talking about. All I knew was that Natalie was nice to me. I buried my face against Natalie's back and muttered, "Nasty lady. Don't talk to her."

That pushed Andrea over the edge. She snapped, "Fine, then. Since you refuse to come with me, break that beggar's hands!"

The security guards surged forward as one. Natalie had grabbed her trash shovel before leaving the morgue, and she now swung it around, trying to fight the guards off. She was only one person against a dozen men, though. In seconds, they had her pinned to the wall.

"Let him go, you monsters!" she shouted.

One guard raised his rubber baton high over his head. It came down hard on Natalie's shoulder, and she screamed in pain.

They were going to beat her to death! She would be in as much pain as I'd been when those rocks had rained down on me all those years ago!

Only one thought remained in my five-year-old mind—I had to protect Natalie.

I didn't know where the strength came from, but I lunged forward like a wild animal, ramming my head into the guard holding her down. "Don't touch her!"

I threw myself in front of Natalie, shielding her with my body.

Andrea let out a short, furious laugh at that. When she spoke, her voice was ice-cold and devoid of emotion. "You two aren't walking out of here today unless you leave behind a pair of bloodsucking hands."

Her words dragged up an old memory. When I was little, I'd broken someone's window and had to pay with my own things.

The nasty lady wanted hands. If I gave her my hands, then she wouldn't hit Natalie anymore.

I squatted down and groped blindly along the floor. My fingers soon touched something heavy and solid. It was a lead block, one that had been wedged under a wobbly table in the hallway.

Without a second's hesitation, I laid my left hand—the one that hadn't been cut open earlier—flat on the cold concrete. With my injured right hand, I struggled to lift the lead block up into the air.

"Colin, no!" Natalie had guessed what I was about to do. She thrashed wildly, screaming.

I bared my teeth in a grin in Andrea's direction. "Miss, I'll pay you back."

Bang!

I brought the lead block crashing down onto my own left hand. With a crack, the crisp sound of shattering bone echoed through the hallway.

The hand that had once belonged to a brilliant young surgeon was destroyed in that single brutal blow. Every bone in my fingers was crushed to dust, leaving behind a mangled ruin of blood and flesh.

The pain shot straight through my nerves, yanking a violent tremor through my entire body. I bit down hard on my screams, then, shaking uncontrollably, held my twisted, bleeding hand out toward Andrea.

"Here, it's yours now… Don't hit Natalie…"

The words left my lips in a broken laugh. Then, my vision went black, and I collapsed into Natalie's arms, finally losing consciousness.

Eugene was truly backed into a corner now.The night before the police were due to question him, he attacked the guard watching him and broke out, slipping into the hospital. He abducted me while I was fast asleep. He dragged me to the underground construction site behind the hospital, where they were expanding the basement. When I woke up, I found myself surrounded by the smell of wet cement and rebar."Hey, blind bat. Since I'm going to prison anyway, I'm taking you down with me!"Eugene had an 80-pound sledgehammer used on the site thrown over his shoulder. He knew Andrea was on her way and wanted us all to die together. He started swinging the sledgehammer, slamming it into a load-bearing column that hadn't fully set. The building work wasn't finished, so taking out just a few columns triggered a chain reaction. The ground shook violently, and overhead came the horrifying sound of concrete cracking apart.Steel and concrete started crashing down. The floor beneath us rolled l

After being chased out of the hospital ward, Eugene found himself on the brink of ruin. He faced accusations of attempted murder and the loss of his medical license.Backed into a corner, he snapped. In desperation, he secretly contacted over a dozen shady media outlets and planned a revenge stunt. It all happened at an annual medical forum press conference hosted by Andrea. In the audience sat hundreds of media outlets and top figures from the medical community, while Andrea was up on stage, giving a speech.Right then, Eugene suddenly burst in from the side door, ramming a wheelchair straight onto the stage. I was strapped into that wheelchair."Everyone, look closely!" Eugene pointed at Andrea and started slandering her. "Andrea Cohen pretends to be some saintly doctor, but in private, she illegally imprisoned a disabled man! This is her ex-husband. She tortured him until he turned into a fool, just so she could steal his assets!"The reporters in the audience went wild. Endles

Andrea went into a kind of frantic overdrive trying to make things up to me.She gave the hospital a hard order to buy the best equipment for every department, just so they could treat my hands and legs. She even paid an outrageous amount to hire a top private chef to customize my meals. At lunchtime, she personally brought in a plate of sliced, top-grade beef to my bedside. It was cooked to a perfect medium, tender and dripping with juice."Colin, time to eat," she said. She crouched beside the bed almost humbly and picked up a fork. Then, she speared a piece of beef and held it up to my lips. "Come on, open up. You used to love this beef."I smelled raw meat. In the past, the only time I smelled meat like this was when it was rotting in the trash. I jerked my hand up and slapped the plate away."I don't want it! It's not cooked! I'll get an upset tummy if I eat that!"I covered my nose in disgust. Then, like I was a thief, I reached into the pocket of my hospital gown and pull

Andrea used her connections to drop all charges against Natalie and get her released from the police station. On the morning of the third day, Natalie went straight to Andrea's office at the hospital. She was carrying a grimy burlap sack that was greasy and filthy. It was the kind used to collect old plastic bottles."Dr. Cohen, I've brought Colin's things." Natalie walked up to the mahogany desk, her face devoid of emotion.Gripping the bottom of the sack, she flipped it over and dumped everything out onto the desk. A harsh clatter echoed through the room.Several reeking plastic bottles tumbled across the surface. Mixed in with them was an old tape recorder, so beat-up its outer casing was about to fall apart, and a few pieces of thick cardboard, punctured all over with ballpoint pen holes.Andrea's lip curled in disgust. Natalie sneered, picked up the busted tape recorder, and pressed play. A burst of cheap, staticky noise came out of the speaker. Then, my childish, stutterin

The impact led to a severe intracranial infection. By that night, my fever had shot up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and I slipped into a half-conscious state.I lay on the hospital bed, burning up like a furnace. My dreams were filled with scenes from the earthquake years ago."Watch out for the rocks! Run!" My eyes remained shut as my hands flailed in the air, trying to shove away those crushing hallucinations. It was late, and the hallway outside was dead quiet. Then, slowly and silently, the door to my hospital ward was pushed open.Eugene slipped in, dressed in a nurse's uniform. In his hand was a syringe filled with a clear liquid. It was a high-concentration potassium chloride solution.Once pushed into a vein, it would trigger instant cardiac arrest. He wanted to make it look like there'd been a medical accident."Why won't you just die, you blind freak?" He ground out the words as he leaned over my bed. "Andrea's eyes will always be fixed on you for as long as you're alive.

Andrea completely lost it. She refused to accept that I, the once brilliant prodigy, had really turned into a useless idiot.Using her authority as hospital director, she forced my transfer into the top-tier VIP rehab ward. The room was padded everywhere, but to me, it still felt like a cage. One day, she came to me with a pile of medical-grade silicone pads and suture threads already threaded through needles."Colin, get up." She yanked me up from the bed.She grabbed my right hand, which was still in a thick cast, and forcefully shoved a thin suture needle between my fingers, which were left exposed."You're a genius, aren't you? Your muscle memory still exists." Her eyes were red, and her voice trembled. "Do the sutures. Sew them together! You can hold a scalpel steady—you have to be able to!"She was trying to use this forced, almost violent method to drag that surgical genius back out of me. But I couldn't see, and my fingers were useless. The needle was slippery. I jabbed
