Chapter 4

Author: Bright Lights
Mrs. Hayes used to say things like, “Nicole is so lucky. Despite her illness, she has Evan by her side, taking care of her and helping her. Young men as loyal and devoted as you are hard to find these days. Meeting someone like you was truly a blessing for our family.”

With just those few words, she always managed to shut down my attempts to suggest taking a break and let Nicole use blood from the hospital blood bank while I recovered my health.

Mrs. Hayes had only agreed to our marriage because I could donate blood to Nicole.

If I ever became unable to do that, I knew her attitude would change immediately.

I understood that perfectly, so for the sake of a future with Nicole, I swallowed every complaint and kept going.

I truly believed Nicole understood what I had sacrificed for her.

I never imagined that she would say those things after getting drunk.

Also, I never imagined that once Jayden appeared, she would throw me away without a second thought.

Still, perhaps Jayden’s appearance was a good thing.

He helped me see the Hayes family clearly, and for the first time in ten years, I finally had a chance to take care of my own body.

I went back to the traditional medicine clinic and got a new prescription. I repeatedly promised the doctor that I would actually follow his instructions and focus on recovering this time, and only then did he finally let me leave.

I did not expect to see Nicole waiting downstairs when I got home.

The moment she saw me, she heaved a sigh. “Why are you taking herbal medicine again? Did our broken engagement upset you so much that it made you sick?

“How about this? If you return the $200,000 you made from donating blood to me, I won’t cancel the engagement. I won’t let that nurse donate blood for me either. I’ll keep using your blood instead. Deal?”

I stared at her for a long time. I could not understand how the person I once loved had become someone like this.

“No,” I said in a low voice.

Now that I had finally seen who she really was, why would I ever go back?

Nicole froze for a moment, clearly surprised that I had rejected her so decisively. After a few seconds, she added, “Fine. Then return the money I transferred to you for the wedding preparations.”

The truth was that I had paid for ninety percent of the wedding expenses. Nicole had only covered ten percent, and most of that had been spent on her own family.

However, I did not want to argue with her anymore. I transferred the money back immediately.

From that moment on, there was nothing left connecting us.

I no longer had to risk my health twice every month to donate blood to her.

Nicole wanted freedom, but honestly, I wanted it even more.

When my best friend, Jake, heard what happened, he waved a hand and tossed me the keys to one of his luxury cars.

“Finding out who your partner really is before your wedding is worth celebrating. Take the car! Consider it my congratulations.”

After driving it for only a couple of days, someone in Nicole’s family group chat posted a photo of me behind the wheel.

I was just realizing I had forgotten to leave the group when Mrs. Hayes sent a message.

[Obviously he bought it with the $200,000 he made off my daughter’s illness. That man has always been calculative. I disliked him the moment I first met him, and now I know why.]

Other relatives immediately joined in.

[Don't be angry, Mrs. Hayes. It’s a blessing that Nicole didn’t actually marry that guy. Now, she has Jayden donating blood out of pure kindness. Your daughter is truly fortunate.]

[Honestly, I never liked that kid either. Even the gift he brought when we first met was embarrassingly cheap. Thank goodness we never became family, or I don’t know how I would’ve dealt with him.]

That last message came from Nicole’s aunt. The first time I met her, I spent half a month’s salary to buy expensive health supplements.

She was not satisfied. She dragged me to a shopping mall, picked out a designer handbag worth more than $10,000, and made me pay for it.

I clenched my teeth and bought it. Still, whenever the story came up later, she never mentioned the handbag. She only complained that the supplements I originally bought were not good enough for her taste.

“I gave her my entire youth and sacrificed my career. In my most helpless and most broken moments, did she ever feel even a shred of pity for me?”I looked up at Nicole, whose face had turned deathly pale, and said each word with absolute clarity, “No. She didn’t.“She mocked me behind my back, saying my complexion was sallow and my body gaunt, calling me shabby and a burden, saying I wasn’t good enough for her. She accepted everything I gave her without hesitation, while privately belittling everything about me.“She never once had sympathy for the man who fought for her with everything he had. So why should I show mercy to her now?”Nicole slowly lifted her head when she heard this. Her voice trembled with disbelief and grievance, “Evan, do you really have to be so calculative?”“Yes.” I met her gaze coldly. “I do.”If I did not keep score, I would be betraying the ten years I lost.I would not withdraw the lawsuit. In the end, the court delivered its verdict. Nicole and her

Next, I released ten years’ worth of bank transfers, spending records, and payment receipts.“For the past decade, I didn’t take a single cent from Nicole. Instead, I spent nearly all my savings, around $300,000 in total, on her medical treatment and medication. I almost gave up my career and pushed my body to its limits just to keep her alive.”After that, I played the recording I had secretly kept of Nicole when she was drunk. From the phone, her voice came through clearly. She was complaining about my yellowed complexion and gaunt body, expressing disgust at my decade-long presence, calling me a burden, and admitting that she only agreed to marry me because she needed my blood, treating it as a reluctant compromise. After all the evidence was presented, the livestream fell completely silent.I looked into the camera and continued, “For ten years, I donated blood without compensation, ruined my health, and sacrificed my future, all for this relationship with Nicole. And what I r

I was completely ungrateful and heartless. To make their story more convincing, they attached Nicole’s severe anemia diagnosis report and years of hospital receipts. On top of that, they went completely insane and leaked all my personal information—my full name, phone number, home address, and workplace—in an attempt to incite online harassment against me.Their posts spread rapidly, climbing to the top of trending lists within just a few hours. Some users recognized Mrs. Hayes and remembered their family’s earlier behavior, speaking up for me in the comments and exposing their lies. However, as the post continued to spread, a flood of uninformed strangers joined in. After being misled by the Hayes family’s emotional narrative, they unleashed a wave of insults and attacks against me.[My goodness, this guy is evil! He stole $200,000 from hi

That sentence was enough to leave Nicole completely speechless. She bit her lip awkwardly, then looked at me pitifully and said, “Evan, I know you’re angry with me, but can you please help me for a bit for the sake of our past relationship? It doesn’t have to be twice a month. Once is fine. The other time, I can use hospital blood bank supplies.“As for the compensation money, I don’t want it. You can keep all of it. How about that?”I let out a cold laugh. “Nicole, you really have some nerve.”I did not bother wasting another second on her. I sidestepped her and walked toward the company entrance.Unexpectedly, she grabbed my arm and refused to let go.“If you won’t donate blood, then just return the $200,000 you made off me,” added Nicole.I did not argue further. I simply called security and had her removed, and instructed them not to allow her into the company again.I thought that would be the end of it. However, she came to my home instead. This time, she brought her mot

They’re utterly heartless!]Reading through the messages from strangers expressing sympathy for me, I felt a warm surge in my chest. Not long after, many of my colleagues also saw the trending local post and recognized that the Evan mentioned in the video was me.Messages started pouring in.[Evan, I finally understand why you were always so pale and exhausted before. We’ll help you build your health back up.]Miss Warren even sent an entire box of supplements directly to the branch office, insisting I take them regularly.Grateful as I was, I still could not help but ask Jake why Jayden would think the Hayes family was wealthy in the first place.Jake replied with a shaking-head emoji.“No idea. I already expected Jayden to give up halfway. Still, there was one thing I still could not understand. He was young and had a stable job. Why would he abandon an easy, comfortable life just to attach himself to a stranger and donate blood for her?It did not make sense. There was no way it was purely out of kindness. With that lingering doubt, I threw myself fully into the new project at the branch office.Once I was completely free from the burden of blood donation, my condition improved day by day.The dizziness and fatigue that used to hit me after a few hours of desk work were completely gone. My mind became clearer, sharper, and my energy surged. My efficiency more than doubled.Within just half a month, I successfully completed all the closing work for the first phase of the new project. After reviewing my report, Mr. Yates’s tone was full of approval.[Evan, I’ve been watching your performance lately.
