Chapter 1 The Patient Who Couldn't Be Saved

Penulis: White Forest's King
Late that night, Silas finally came to the hospital. He reeked of alcohol, and his white coat still carried a trace of a woman's perfume.

"Chloe, how are you feeling?"

I looked at him and asked softly, "Silas, when can I start the treatment?"

He frowned. "Wynter said your current survival rate is only 30%. It's too risky."

"What about Mr. Zerin's daughter last month?" I asked quietly. "What was her survival rate?"

Silas hesitated. "She was only in stage three. You're terminal. It's different."

"They donated 30 million to your research fund," I said, fixing my eyes on him. "Is that what makes it different?"

His face darkened. "Chloe, how can you think of me like that? I developed this drug for you."

Seeing the righteous look on his face, I suddenly laughed. "Silas, do you even remember how I got this illness in the first place?"

Ten years ago, there was an explosion in his lab, and I inhaled the toxic chemical fumes from running into the fire and dragging him out.

The diagnosis read: acute chemical lung injury, irreversible fibrosis in the later stage.

He had knelt by my bed and sworn, "Chloe, I'll find a way to cure you."

He was about to speak when his phone rang—a call from Wynter.

"Prof. Stenson, the lights in the lab went out. I'm a little scared… could you come over?" Her voice was soft, almost tearful.

Silas immediately stood up. "Don't be scared, I'll be right there."

I grabbed the corner of his coat. "Silas, I'm not done talking to you—"

"We'll talk another time. Wynter's alone, I can't leave her like that." He pulled his coat free and walked out without looking back.

After he left, I asked the nurse to check the condition of that rich tycoon's daughter. As expected, she had been given Silas' new drug. In three months, her condition had stabilized, and she was already living a normal life.

Meanwhile, I had been issued my third critical condition notice.

The next day, I forced my failing body to sneak into Silas' lab. Standing outside the door, I heard Wynter's voice.

"Prof. Stenson, let's give this new batch to Mr. Jemison's daughter. He's willing to invest another 50 million."

There was a brief silence inside before Silas spoke, his tone gentle—one I hadn't heard in years. "Wynter, I know you're thinking of what's best for the lab, but—"

"But what?" she interrupted, sounding aggrieved. "Prof. Stenson, I know I shouldn't say this, but… is Chloe really that sick? Every time she's in critical condition, it's right when you're the busiest. Last time, when you were about to present at the international conference, she was admitted to the ICU. Now, just as we're celebrating the success of the new drug, she's critical again. Isn't that a little too convenient?"

She sighed softly. "Professor, you've already sacrificed so much for her. Mr. Jemison's investment will determine the project's future. You can't keep letting her… hold you back."

Silas was silent for a long time. I held my breath, waiting for his answer.

"You're right," he finally said. "Maybe I've been too soft on her. Fine—let's do as you said. Give this batch to Ms. Jemison." His voice turned cold. "After all, Chloe's condition probably isn't as dire as she makes it out to be."

So all those times I hovered between life and death—in his eyes, it was all pretend.

I pushed open the door, shattering the cozy scene inside. Wynter startled and instinctively leaned toward Silas, who reflexively turned, shielding her with half his body.

Silas' expression faltered. "Chloe? What are you doing here? In your condition, you shouldn't be wandering around like this."

A month later, the court convened. Chloe did not appear in person; she entrusted Wayne to handle everything on her behalf. Inside the courtroom, every piece of evidence was laid bare for all to see. Silas had no defense left to offer."Defendant Silas Stenson," the judge announced, "you are found guilty of misappropriating your ward's medical funds in a substantial amount, resulting in delayed treatment and severe consequences."The court sentences you to three years in prison, suspended for five years, and orders compensation to the plaintiff totaling 15 million dollars for both economic and emotional damages."Defendant Wynter Keller, for unlawfully altering the patient's medication and causing serious harm, is sentenced to seven years in prison. Her medical license is revoked, and she is permanently barred from practicing medicine."Wynter broke down, sobbing hysterically. "Objection! It was Silas! He made me do it!"Silas looked at her with an icy calm. This was the woman he h

When Silas returned home, it was the first time he truly took a good look at the riverside villa he had bought with the Campbells' money. The place had a lavish French-style interior, crystal chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows that opened to a dazzling night view of the river. He walked into the bedroom and opened the wardrobe. Inside hung Wynter's clothes, and an entire cabinet was stuffed with designer handbags. A wave of disgust rose in Silas' chest. Without hesitation, he threw everything out—every single piece."Prof. Stenson? What are you doing?" Wynter's voice came from the doorway. She had been avoiding him these past few days, but when she saw he hadn't gone to the hospital that day, she finally dared to come back."Get out," Silas said coldly."Professor…""I said get out!" he roared. "You're never to set foot in this house ever again!"Wynter's face went pale. "Professor, you can't do this to me. After everything I've done for you all these years—have you forgot

The news spread through the medical community like wildfire."Have you heard? Silas Stenson is being sued.""You mean that award-winning prodigy?""Prodigy? He fed his fiancee placebos for a decade just to collect control-group data!""That's sick!"The Medical Association quickly launched an investigation."Prof. Stenson," one of the investigators said, "can you explain this?"Silas sat slumped in the chair, his face pale and drawn. "I… I only wanted to gather a full set of control data first. Once the new drug was complete, I planned to use it on her—""So you gave her placebos for a decade?" The expert's voice was cold. "Do you realize what that means? It means a treatable illness became a chronic one because of you. Ten years of pain that never had to happen! Prof. Stenson, as a doctor, you treated a patient like a lab specimen. Does that not violate every principle of medical ethics?"Silas couldn't answer. He didn't even dare imagine how Chloe had endured those ten years

Snow was falling outside the hotel window in Helvetia when Silas received the call."Prof. Stenson, Ms. Campbell is missing." The nurse's voice trembled through the line. His hand, mid-revising the slides for his next day's presentation, froze. "What do you mean, missing?""She was discharged three days ago… We thought she'd gone home to recover, but when Dr. Keller went to check on her today, everything was gone—every personal belonging cleared out."He shot to his feet, the laptop crashing to the floor with a loud bang. "But her condition made it impossible for her to be discharged!""We're not sure… Prof. Stenson, please come back quickly!"The moment he hung up, Silas booked the earliest flight home. During the ten-hour journey, he didn't close his eyes once. His mind was consumed by Chloe's frail figure.'Where could she have gone? With her condition, how long can she survive without professional care?'The moment he landed, he rushed straight to the hospital. The room was

Angela wiped her tears beside me. "Chloe… will you ever come back?""No, Angela." I held her hand gently. "There are too many bad memories here. I want to start over.""What about me? Can I come with you?" she suddenly asked, stumping me for a moment."Chloe, I watched you grow up and saw all the pain you endured in the past decade," Angela said through her tears. "Besides, I'm done working here, and my kids are all overseas. I've got no one left in this city. Every time I see Prof. Stenson, I can't help but think of everything you've suffered… Please, let me come with you. Let me take care of you."My nose stung, and before I knew it, tears were sliding down my cheeks again. "Okay, Angela. We'll leave together."…Three days later, Silas flew to Helvetia for an academic conference. The very next day, I signed my discharge papers. Wayne arranged for an ambulance to take me directly to Kingspoint Hospital. The first time I met Richard Charrick was in the ICU consultation room. He

"What is it? I'll help with anything.""Help me reach someone." I gave her a name. "Mr. Soriano—my parents' former legal advisor."Wayne Soriano arrived the following evening. He was a man in his fifties, hair streaked with gray, but his eyes were sharp and penetrating. The moment he saw me, his gaze softened, and his voice trembled. "Chloe… what happened to you? You've grown so thin.""Mr. Soriano," I said weakly, managing a faint smile. "I'm sorry. I should've stayed in touch all these years.""Don't apologize, child. You've been sick—I understand." He sat down beside my bed. "You said you needed my help. What's going on?"I hesitated for a moment, then told him everything—every lie, every betrayal of the past ten years.By the time I finished, Wayne's expression had darkened completely. He slammed his fist against the table, his voice shaking with fury. "That bastard! How could he? Your parents entrusted you to me before they passed away."I saw how well Silas treated you, ho
