Chapter 4

Author: Deer Lantern
Knowing she was in the wrong, Gina apologized again.

"I'm sorry, Suzanne. This one really is on me."

"But two million isn't nothing, and Harper pays on the spot. That's hard to say no to. I..."

Suzanne cut her off through gritted teeth. "Enough. I don't need your excuses. You'll toss out any shred of teamwork for a little money, and I don't want a partner like that."

Gina wasn't having it, and she pushed right back.

"Oh, and you've got teamwork? You only teamed up with me in the first place because I'm Harper's archnemesis and you wanted to use her as your foil.

"You act like you're so above it all, but you're in this industry same as the rest of us. Playing a sweet innocent character a few times doesn't make you one in real life.

"And another thing. Whether Harper's a real princess or a fake one is for me to decide, not you.

"You don't care for Harper's money, and that's fine. But has Harper ever actually used her money to humiliate you?

"You're not hurting for cash, so do us both a favor and stop mocking our choices."

I nodded, satisfied. "There's the old Gina I remember."

Suzanne's face flushed red.

The moment the words left her mouth, Gina clapped a hand over it, regretting them instantly.

She whispered anxiously, "Her eight backers are definitely going to swoop in now. Are you going to be okay? Maybe you should keep the two million and spend it on yourself instead."

I waved her off. "I'm not worried."

She'd always trusted me completely, and hearing that was all it took to put the confidence right back in her step.

A commotion rippled through the crowd.

Eight strikingly handsome men, every one of them well over six feet tall, came walking toward us.

The one leading the group was Leon Robbins.

Looking at their faces, I finally understood why they'd felt so familiar.

These were the same up-and-coming talents my father had been sponsoring for the past few years.

I'd occasionally heard him mention how sharp these particular men were. He'd known I wanted to break into show business and had even offered to have Cyrus Tilman, who was already in the industry, help me out.

I'd turned him down. I'd wanted to make it on my own.

Since I was set to inherit the family fortune one day, my father had shown me their photos before. I never forget a face, so I'd remembered every one of them.

My family had backed them heavily, and we held the largest stake of anyone in every one of their companies.

The moment the eight men saw Suzanne crying, they rushed over in a panic, crowding around her, fussing over her, trying to comfort her.

The comments practically gloated.

[Just wait, Harper's done for.]

[The last woman who messed with Suzanne got wiped out by these eight guys a long time ago.]

Leon pointed at me, his expression cold.

"You. Get on your knees and apologize to Suzanne, or I'll make sure you're blacklisted from this entire industry."

The comments went wild with excitement.

[Ha, finally!!! This is so satisfying to watch!]

[Poor Suzanne, she's been through so much.]

[Justice at last!]

I looked Leon over, unimpressed. "You'll blacklist me? You're not even in this industry."

Cyrus walked over. "Leon's like an older brother to me. Whatever he says goes."

His handsome face alone was nearly enough to crash the comment feed.

I nodded to myself. He really was good-looking. I'd actually seen a few of his shows.

Not bad.

Just not very bright.

Even with all my money, I'd never gone around throwing my weight around like this.

They'd only been rich for a few years and were already this arrogant?

Leon tipped his chin up, cold and condescending. "Harper McAvoy, is it? I'll give you three seconds to apologize to Suzanne."

When I still didn't move, he lifted a hand.

A swarm of bodyguards in suits and ties poured in and surrounded me.

Leon gave the order like it was nothing. "Deal with her. I don't want to see her here tomorrow."

Gina grabbed my arm, terrified.

I raised an eyebrow. I wasn't scared in the slightest.

"Leon, is this really how arrogant you are? Handling people out in the open like this? Do you have any concept of the law at all?"

Leon scoffed. "In Radley City, I answer to no one."

The next second, the bodyguards turned on their heels, planting themselves squarely between him and me. They were protecting me now.

I chuckled, pulled out my phone, and rattled off all eight names like I was reading a menu.

"Dad. Leon Robbins, Cyrus Tilman, and the other six. Liquidate everything under their names.

"Buy them out? No thanks. They're good-looking, sure, but I don't like any of them.

"So just let them go bankrupt."

The butler called the police immediately. The men still in front of me kept spilling out frantic apologies.I shook my head, unimpressed. "You still won't even admit you were wrong. You'd rather keep blaming Suzanne for everything."Even without Suzanne, you'd have found some other scapegoat to show off how powerful you are."You don't actually think you did anything wrong. You're just panicking because you've lost your power."Leon gripped the gate hard, forcing himself to stay calm. "Miss McAvoy, we really do know we were wrong. We didn't mean to pin everything on Suzanne."It's true Suzanne has her own issues too, but whatever you say goes. We'll change, all of us. Please, just give us a chance."Your family invested in us for years. Are you really willing to throw all that money away and turn us into failures?"I shrugged. "Doesn't bother me in the slightest. My family has more money than we know what to do with. If it comes to that, we'll just back a few more people."But

Gina muttered, "You were never really that ordinary to begin with."I let out a soft snort."I've got a heart big enough to let that slide. I won't hold it against you."The people nearby were watching us with unmistakable interest."Ship it, ship it, this is such a good ship!""God, this is killing me. My great-grandfather's generation had already claimed the title of the richest family in the world. As long as none of their descendants did anything catastrophically stupid, holding onto that spot was basically guaranteed.By the time it got to my father, I honestly couldn't even say how many generations of wealth we w

Leon got the same answer. He looked up at me, trembling. "Who... who exactly are you?"I pursed my lips. "Honestly, I didn't want to say. But there's no hiding it now. I'm the future heir to the McAvoy Group you keep talking about. Harper McAvoy."The McAvoy family only has one daughter, and that's me, so of course I'm the one who inherits."As for you eight, you're nothing more than something my father funded for fun in his spare time. You really did have a bright future ahead of you. Too bad the moment you got a little power, you turned around and used it to bully people. "My family doesn't like that, and we don't welcome people like that holding power."He refused to believe it or accept it. He sucked in a sharp breath before forcing himself to his feet and straightening his clothes, trying to salvage what dignity he had left. He spat, "You'll regret this."Leon turned and walked away.Panicked, Suzanne grabbed his wrist. "Leon, you can't leave. If you leave, I'm… I'm fin

By now, everyone had figured out I really did solve every problem with money.Cash, up front, every time. The quiet grumbling about me had shifted to just calling me obscenely rich, nothing worse than that.[Is having to cry on camera for a melodrama really the worst thing this heiress has ever had to suffer through? Lord.][She's the McAvoy heiress. OMG. Those dudes are going bankrupt for real.]Leon and the others, meanwhile, couldn't see how heated the comments had gotten. They were still convinced I'd somehow tampered with the bodyguards and kept trying to talk them back into obeying orders.Gina brought me a chair and kept fanning me the whole time.Once it became clear he couldn't win the bodyguards back, Leon shouted furiously at the director to cut the livestream. The director tried, since this had clearly spiraled too far.But no matter what he did, the stream wouldn't cut. Someone else had control of it.Sweat poured down his forehead. "Mr. Robbins, I don't know wh

Snatches of conversation drifted into my ears."Oh my god, Harper's lost it. She's actually talking back to Mr. Robbins like that.""No idea, but we should probably keep our distance."Someone nudged Gina. "Gina, you should get away from her now, or you're going to get dragged down with her."Gina hesitated, wavering.Worried she might actually bolt and leave me without anyone to fan me, I leaned over and whispered something in her ear.Her eyes went instantly steely with conviction. "I will follow Harper to the death!"I gave her a look of pure disgust. "That's really not necessary."Seeing that I hadn't paid him any attention, Leon grew even angrier and demanded I apologize, threatening to have his bodyguards finish me off if I refused.I turned deliberately to face him and rolled my eyes as hard as I could."Leon, how exactly did you end up in charge of anything? Can't you see your own bodyguards aren't even listening to you?"Leon refused to believe it. "You lot, drag Ha

For five full seconds, there was dead silence. Then a soft laugh slipped out.Suzanne went from tears to laughter in an instant. She took the handkerchief Leon offered her, dabbed gently at her eyes, and spoke to me in a soft, sugary voice."Harper, you probably don't realize how powerful Leon's company actually is."Leon's company works directly with the McAvoy family's business, which is Radley City's, no, the entire world's number-one wealthiest family."Their headquarters are right here in Radley City. The tallest building in the whole city belongs to them, and Leon actually holds a position there."Honestly, you could say Leon's company is basically an offshoot of the McAvoy family's."She put on an expression like she was doing me a favor. "I know you're rich and used to getting your way, and I know you've humiliated plenty of people with your money."But I'm different from them. I don't need money, and I don't need connections either. I just want to earn my own way up,
