Chapter 3

作者: Lumos Walker
The parents froze.

Denise's face crumpled. With trembling hands, she called her daughter.

"Where are you? Get back here. Right now!"

A few minutes later, Lily hurried over with an iced latte in her hand.

The moment our eyes met, she knew who'd talked.

She flung the entire drink at me.

"That's what you get for making up lies about me!"

Cold liquid ran beneath my collar and down my neck.

Lily turned to the parents.

"Please trust us. Don't let someone with an agenda mislead you!

"These are the most important exams of our lives. With my help, everyone in our class is going to do amazingly well!

"So relax. Let your kids go away and enjoy themselves now that it's over. On results day, we're going to blow you all away!"

Each claim was more ridiculous than the last. The parents looked torn between astonishment and doubt.

But she wasn't finished.

She turned back to me with a sneer.

"Oh, I almost forgot our poor class president. I guess you can't afford a vacation?

"Perfect. I've got a job for you. Put together fifty copies of the exam answers."

I gave a cold laugh and shook my head.

"Can't. I'll be busy finding you all coffins."

Before I'd finished, she threw several stacks of cash at me.

She made sure I saw how much more was in her wallet.

Right. That idiot Tyler had paid extra.

Enough to make her feel rich.

Enough to send her hurtling toward disaster even faster.

What good would printed answer keys do? They couldn't take them back anyway.

A smile tugged at my mouth.

I stopped arguing and quietly picked up the money.

It would cover some nice funeral flowers.

Seeing me give in, Lily laughed so hard her eyes watered.

"Wow. Money really does solve everything with you.

"It's settled, then. If those answers aren't ready on results day, the whole class is coming after you."

She sauntered away, leaving the parents staring after her.

Denise rubbed the faded hem of her shirt and approached me uncertainly.

"Is what my daughter said true?"

I gave her a pitying look and walked away without answering.

I had plenty to do.

Prepare the answer keys. Prepare for the funerals. Work out which colleges I wanted to apply to.

The days flew by.

Then results day arrived.

Wearing a long black dress, I reached the classroom and found Lily outside, nervously rummaging through her wallet.

"That's weird. I didn't think I'd spent that much...

"Nine ninety-nine each. Why does it feel like I'm short?"

She fumbled through the cash, trying to count on her fingers.

I'd already seen enough.

"Stop counting. That doesn't even look like thirty thousand dollars."

I leaned closer.

"You're screwed, Lily.

"You can only take a few of them back. What do you think the ones you leave behind will do to you?"

I hadn't bothered to lower my voice.

Then I stepped aside.

Our other forty-nine classmates were approaching, their faces dark.

They'd heard every word.

I smiled and turned away.Behind me, the shouting started again."That's right! I remember. That's exactly what you said!""Pay us back! Even if you did take them back, it wasn't anything like you promised. You're a fraud!"Under the barrage, Lily finally crumbled."Please stop. I didn't want this to happen either."I don't have any money left. I still owe the loan companies!"Her face was a wet, ruined mess. She was crying so hard she could barely speak."Please. Just leave me alone!"I was trying to help everyone. I never thought it would end like this..."But the classmates who'd smiled so eagerly at her before weren't letting her off.Shouting and crying, all at once.Eventually, even the parents joined in."You little monster. You dragged my child into this!""My kid could've gotten into college this year. You ruined it!"The last crying voice I heard belonged to Denise. She sounded so disappointed that her voice shook."Lily, why would you do something like this?

Under the pressure, Lily finally broke. After a long silence, she forced the words out."You only get one chance to go back."The room went still.Nobody moved. I could hear my own pulse.Tyler slapped her.The scratches on her cheek began bleeding again."You're saying we're stuck with zeros?"No. No way. We spent years studying, and you ruined everything because you couldn't get this right?"Why do you lot get to come back as top scorers while we're left with nothing?"His voice was going hoarse. He shook her shoulders as though he wanted to tear her apart. Then one of the students who'd returned snapped at him."You think we had it easy?"Sobs broke out as they began describing what had happened."English started, and barely half a minute later they took the papers away!""Everything after that was scrambled. Math went on for more than ten hours. But extra time doesn't help when you don't know the answers!""We had nothing to eat. Nothing to drink. We were so thirst

The three days passed quickly.I graciously unlocked the classroom and let everyone in.The clock ticked on, and the classmates who had gathered to watch hardly dared to breathe.Lily moved first. The scratches on her cheek had dried. Her lashes fluttered."Am I... am I back?"She struggled to open her eyes. Then she saw me leaning close and screamed."What the hell, Nora? Get away from me!"She shoved me back and dragged in great gulps of air."Water. Somebody get me water!"I dumped ten cups of iced latte over her head. She screamed, then desperately tried to drink the liquid running down her face.I leaned in and enjoyed the sight."Awake now?"Good. Get on your knees and thank me."Her eyes widened. She almost laughed in disbelief."Are you insane? You want me to kneel—"Her mother grabbed her and forced her down.Lily's protests disappeared beneath a flood of thanks."Thank you! My daughter's awake. She's really awake!"I looked down at them and laughed."Onc

I hadn't exactly whispered. Most of the classmates who were still conscious heard me.They rushed over, their eyes bright with hope."She's right. If she talks to them, we might still pull this off!""What are you waiting for, Tyler? It's just kneeling. She's not asking for a pound of flesh!""Don't you want Lily to wake up so she can take the rest of us back?"Someone kicked Tyler's leg out from under him.He landed on one knee in front of me.Such a familiar scene.Only now, our positions were reversed. He looked up, humiliated tears spilling from his eyes."Enough? Is this enough?"I never knew you were like this, Nora. Humiliating a classmate in public!""Both knees," I said. "And say it out loud, where everyone can hear you."His classmates shoved him the rest of the way down and held him there until he'd said it.His face was blotched red by the time they let go.He looked ridiculous.Warm satisfaction spread through me as I turned toward the parents who were pre

As the families began to scatter, Tyler finally broke. He looked ready to fall to his knees."Please. Just listen to me!"Take them back to the classroom. They'll wake up. Lily, too. But if you split them up, their souls won't be able to return. The whole time-travel thing could stop working!"Nobody has to die. We just have to wait until the exams are over!"He kept begging. What a change from the boy who'd kicked over my desk and torn up my paper. His eyes were red as he begged, but no one wanted to hear it.The crowd shouted him down.I took it all in, savoring every moment. Then Tyler spotted my smile.Shaking with anger, he charged over."You're smiling? Don't you care about your classmates at all?"You're supposed to be our class president. How can you be this irresponsible?"So he'd lost control of the situation and decided to take it out on me.I raised my eyes and answered calmly."Short memory, Tyler?"Didn't I warn you? Every one of you chose to listen to Li

The parents stared in disbelief."Zero? How is that possible?""Did they really hand in blank papers? Have they lost their minds?""I don't believe it. There has to be a mistake. My child has never gotten a score like that!"Their voices rose. Tears started falling."What happened? Why did my child score zero, and why won't they wake up?"Who did this? Who's trying to hurt my child?"Across the room, things were getting uglier still.Slaps cracked through the air, followed by cries of pain."Stop! Please stop hitting me!"I'm a victim, too! Lily said she'd take me back. How was I supposed to know she'd break her promise?"I'm sorry. I know I messed up. Please stop!"I watched Tyler, who'd been so sure of himself before, clench his teeth in fury.He punched the big screen, tears streaming down his face."I should've answered the questions. I should've at least tried!"No college is going to take me with this score!"The room was chaos. But a few people were still clingi
