Chapter 3

Author: The Awakened
The Sanders family froze.

A second later, Simon let out a cold laugh.

“Sophie must have been guilty, so she hid somewhere and didn’t dare show her face.”

He paused, then added with disgust, “That’s what people like her do. When they mess up, they run.”

Mr. and Mrs. Sanders said nothing.

But they were clearly thinking the same thing.

The host, however, didn’t agree.

“Have you ever considered that Miss Sanders might not have been hiding at all? That she may have already died in that avalanche?”

The entire room fell silent.

The host continued, “Maybe Miss Sanders didn’t escape alone.

“Maybe she knew Mrs. Sanders couldn’t move at the time. If both of them stayed there, they would both die.

“So she left on her own to find help, only for something to happen to her on the way.

“Mr. Sanders, after the accident, did you send anyone to investigate...”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Simon slammed his hand on the table and cut him off in fury.

Mrs. Sanders’s face went deathly pale. Her chest rose and fell hard, as if she couldn’t catch her breath and might faint at any second.

Mr. Sanders quickly held her up, his brows drawn tight.

The look he gave the host was full of displeasure and warning.

Floating in the air, I couldn’t help but smile bitterly.

Even an outsider had guessed how I died.

But my biological parents and brother refused to believe it.

They would rather believe I was an ungrateful daughter who abandoned her mother and escaped alone.

They had all forgotten.

That day wasn’t just Lily’s birthday.

It was mine too.

I had only wanted their company for once.

That was why I gathered the courage to say I wanted to go skiing.

After the avalanche hit, Mrs. Sanders was buried under the snow.

I dug with everything I had.

I kept digging until I lost all feeling in my fingers.

Only then did I finally pull her out.

But by then, Mrs. Sanders had already passed out.

I couldn’t save her on my own.

I wrapped every warm thing I had around her.

Then, wearing only a thin sweater, I turned and walked into the blizzard.

I walked for an entire day.

I fell so many times I lost count.

Finally, right before my body gave out, I found the rescue team.

I told them where Mrs. Sanders was.

They told me to wait by the road.

But I had been waiting for less than ten minutes when an out-of-control truck came rushing toward me.

By the time I was taken to the hospital, it was already too late.

Before I died, I asked the doctors to donate my organs.

I wanted them to live for me.

To see the spring I would never get to see.

Everyone at the scene looked at the Sanders family with doubtful eyes.

After all, if the host’s guess was true, then the Sanders family had completely misunderstood Sophie.

Even Mr. and Mrs. Sanders’s eyes began to waver.

Then Simon suddenly sneered.

He stood up, his tone condescending.

“I don’t know who’s behind you or who’s trying to target the Sanders family.

“But listen carefully. I have proof that Sophie is absolutely not dead.”

Mr. and Mrs. Sanders looked up at him at the same time, surprise written all over their faces.

Simon took a deep breath, turned toward his parents, and lowered his voice.

“Dad, Mom, I’m sorry. There’s something I’ve been keeping from you.”

“After Sophie disappeared, I actually received a letter from her.”

Lily was still in Simon’s grip, her collar twisted in his fist. But there was no fear on her face.Instead, her smile only grew wilder. She tilted her head, her taunting gaze sweeping across the three Sanders family members.“Every time I framed her, didn’t you all believe me?“All I had to do was give you one look, and you decided she was bullying me.“If I shed one tear, you decided she was vicious.“If I said she was jealous of me, you locked her in her room and wouldn’t let her out.“Tell me, weren’t you the final straw that drove her to her death?”Mrs. Sanders trembled violently, her face as white as paper.Lily’s gaze shifted to Simon, mockery hanging at the corner of her mouth.“And you, Simon. I wrote a random letter, and you believed it. You didn’t even bother to verify anything before transferring that twenty million dollars.“Ask yourself honestly. How much did you ever trust your biological sister? And now you’re pretending to be heartbroken. It’s disgusting.”

Simon took a deep breath, his voice hoarse.“Lily, Sophie is dead.”Lily froze. Her eyes widened slightly.Disbelief instantly filled her face. Her eyes reddened, and her voice trembled.“Sophie is dead? How?”She bit her lip and looked up at Simon, her tone cautious and tentative.“Simon, are you sure this news is real?”“You know Sophie used to love putting on an act.”“What if she’s using this trick again to get sympathy and take the chance to drive me out?”As Lily kept speaking, grievance crept into her voice. She lowered her head pitifully. In the past, every time she made that expression, the Sanders family would ache for her and shield her behind them. Then they would turn around and blame Sophie for being unreasonable. But this time, the living room was deathly silent. The Sanders family looked at her as if they were looking at a stranger.“We’ve already seen her body with our own eyes.”The expression on Lily’s face stiffened for a split second. She lowered

The Sanders family’s first reaction was disbelief.Lily’s eyes would turn red if she accidentally stepped on an ant.Everyone praised her for being gentle and kind. She never even raised her voice. How could Lily possibly do something like this?Mrs. Sanders was the first to shake her head. Her tone was firm and absolute.“Impossible. Lily is the kindest person I know. There must be some misunderstanding.”“Simon, look into it again. Carefully.”But as more and more evidence surfaced, the color drained from the Sanders family’s faces inch by inch.Bank records.Call logs.Transfer receipts.Every single clue pointed in the same direction.Lily had not only forged that letter. She had cut off every piece of news about my death.Even my death itself was tied to her.The Sanders family found the truck driver who had caused the accident.Simon spent three days and three nights using every connection he had before he finally dragged the man out of hiding. After threats and

The Sanders family fell silent. They stared blankly at the ten children standing onstage. That was right. These were the children Sophie had saved. How could Sophie not have been a good person? The girl standing at the front had big, bright eyes. And when she smiled, she looked almost exactly like Sophie.“Sophie...”Mrs. Sanders suddenly broke down sobbing. The emotions she had been holding back for far too long finally burst free.Mr. Sanders turned his face away, his shoulders trembling slightly.Simon’s eyes turned red.He clenched his teeth hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. They finally realized it.I was truly dead. The vicious, spoiled daughter they had always accused me of being. The Sophie they wished they had never brought back. She was really dead.At the Sanders family’s desperate pleading, Mr. Landon took them to see my body. The cold white lights in the lab fell across my face.I lay there quietly, like Sleeping Beauty. The face that had once cried and

The speaker was an elderly man.Leaning on a cane, he slowly walked out from the crowd. His back was perfectly straight, and his eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s.The moment everyone saw him, their expressions turned respectful. The Sanders family was no exception.“Mr. Landon? What brings you here?”He was the patriarch of the Landon family. One word from him could make powerful families tremble. Now, he was looking at Simon with a dark expression.Simon finally calmed down.He steadied himself and said, “Mr. Landon, the person who organized this banquet is clearly trying to go against the Sanders family. We didn’t mean to offend you.”Before he could finish, Mr. Landon said calmly, “I’m the one who organized this charity gala.”The expression on Simon’s face froze.Mr. Landon’s unreadable gaze settled on him.“Are you saying I’m deliberately going against the Sanders family?”Simon opened his mouth. Not a single word came out.Mr. Landon no longer looked at him.He

The host projected the file from his phone onto the big screen. The moment the photo appeared, everyone sucked in a sharp breath.“So... that’s where Sophie Sanders’s body is.”Curious, I followed everyone’s gaze and looked over.My body lay quietly on an examination table. My hands were folded over my stomach. My eyes were gently closed, my lashes lowered. There was no expression on my pale face.I looked as if I had simply fallen asleep. In front of me stood a sign.Specimen No. 231.“Sophie Sanders really is dead.”“And she didn’t just donate her organs. She donated her body too.”“No wonder the Sanders family never saw her body. She chose to donate her body to medical research.”Whispers surged through the room like a tide.Every word struck the Sanders family in the chest.Mrs. Sanders’s face turned as white as paper.
